Garmin has released a new beta firmware update for select devices in its Fenix 8 series, though the software is not yet available for the entire lineup. Version 23.11 is offered for the Fenix and Tactix 8 AMOLED, the Fenix 8 Solar, the Enduro 3, and the Quatix 8. Because this is a pre-release build, some features are intentionally absent: diving capabilities are switched off, and electrocardiogram recording and analysis have been removed. The update will not be pushed to devices automatically, even for users enrolled in the beta program; it must be downloaded and installed manually.

Known issues for early adopters

Garmin has flagged a specific caution for indoor climbing enthusiasts. The company notes that this beta can cause the watch to crash during indoor climbing sessions, a bug it expects to eliminate in a future software release. Users who rely heavily on that activity profile may want to postpone installing the update.

What the new software delivers

Moving from version 22.38 to 23.11 introduces a handful of practical additions. Dive computer settings can now be shared via Garmin Share, and the watch can generate a quick suggestion for an unplanned running workout. Volume controls have been broadened, and during navigation users can toggle between north-up and route-oriented map views with a tap on the touchscreen. The release also addresses multiple bugs, including several underlying issues that could trigger unexpected restarts or shutdowns.
