Chinese EV Makers Turn Up the Pressure on German Automakers
The latest registration data from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) shows a decisive shift in the electric vehicle market. Tesla and a growing number of Chinese brands are consistently outpacing the country’s established automotive giants, underlining the expanding footprint of Chinese manufacturers across Europe.
Xpeng’s AI-Driven Strategy
As this competition intensifies, Chinese firms are investing heavily in artificial intelligence to differentiate their offerings. Xpeng, viewed as one of Tesla’s primary challengers, has chosen Munich to announce its new Next Generation Pilot (NGP) driver assistance system. Built on the company’s proprietary VLA 2.0 AI platform, the feature is slated for an international rollout starting in early 2027, contingent on meeting local legal requirements in each market.
Xpeng is marketing the system under the label “Level 2++” autonomous driving, though the term warrants careful scrutiny. The designation is purely a marketing phrase and does not correspond to an official SAE classification. From a regulatory and technical standpoint, the system remains a sophisticated Level 2 driver assistance package, meaning the individual behind the wheel must constantly supervise traffic and retains full responsibility for the vehicle’s operation. This clearly separates it from genuine Level 3 or Level 4 automated driving systems.
On-Road Performance in Munich
To showcase how the software handles European conditions, Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng and Head of Development Liu Xianming conducted public test drives through Munich. The system, installed in the new Xpeng L03 SUV coupé, successfully navigated narrow streets, roundabouts, construction zones, and complex intersections governed by Germany’s “right before left” priority rule, according to the manufacturer. The AI also reportedly responded reliably to pedestrians, cyclists, and e-scooter riders.
The technical philosophy behind the system closely mirrors Tesla’s approach. The VLA 2.0 architecture relies on an end-to-end AI model that bypasses both LiDAR sensors and high-definition maps. Instead, it interprets raw camera data and continuously refines its behavior by learning from real-world driving scenarios. Processing power comes from Xpeng’s internally developed Turing AI chip; the Xpeng L03 Ultra variant uses three of these processors, delivering a combined computing performance of up to 2,250 TOPS (trillion operations per second).
Data Gains and European Readiness
Xpeng reports that early results in China have already demonstrated meaningful progress. In the first month following its domestic launch, driver interventions per 100 kilometers dropped by roughly 26 percent, while required takeovers on narrow roads fell by nearly 36 percent. Almost 97 percent of users activated the feature during that period.
In preparation for the European launch, the company is aligning with new UNECE regulations, including UNR 171, which addresses advanced driver assistance systems for urban traffic. Concurrently, Xpeng is running robotaxi trials in China based on the same AI platform. European customers can expect the new functions to arrive via over-the-air software updates once regulatory approvals are secured.
