China’s Leapmotor has offered a first look inside its new A05 compact electric vehicle, a model that could heighten competition in Europe’s increasingly contested EV market. The five-door hatchback blends modern cabin design, roof-mounted LiDAR, and a maximum range of 317 miles in a package measuring roughly 4.20 meters in length, slotting between subcompact and compact segments.
Modern cabin with premium touches
The interior pairs two-tone surfaces with synthetic suede and pink accents, centered on a large touchscreen and a compact digital instrument display behind a two-spoke steering wheel. A full-width air vent strip features ambient lighting, while an uncluttered center console houses wireless smartphone charging, reflecting the brand’s effort to equip affordable models with comfort and technology features typically reserved for higher price points.
LiDAR and driver-assistance technology
A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor – still uncommon in this vehicle class – supplies environmental data for a suite of advanced driver-assistance functions. Leapmotor lists enhanced highway assistance, navigation-supported urban driving, and automated parking with stored maneuvers among the A05’s capabilities.
Powertrain choices and battery range
Customers can select between two electric motors delivering 70 kW or 90 kW. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are offered in 39.8 kWh and 53 kWh capacities, providing driving ranges of 252 miles and 317 miles respectively. These figures position the A05 as a potential rival to established models such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and, on price, to more accessible offerings like the VW ID. Polo, notably as German manufacturers still work to bring sub-€25,000 EVs to market.
Stellantis partnership and European prospects
Leapmotor’s integration with Stellantis opens a clear path to European showrooms, supported by an established international sales and service network. Sibling model Leapmotor A10 already retails in China at price levels far below equivalent European EVs in direct conversion, though official figures for the A05 in Europe are not yet available. The alliance makes an eventual European launch considerably more concrete than for many other Chinese brands, intensifying pressure on domestic automakers to deliver affordable and well-equipped electric alternatives.
