Xiaomi’s Tri-Foldable Phone: Features and Expectations

In the near future, tri-foldable phones might become a significant trend in the smartphone market. In May, TCL presented the world’s first working tri-foldable phone at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2024 event, although it's not yet available for consumers. There is speculation that Huawei’s upcoming tri-foldable phone, anticipated to launch in the next few months, could be the first tri-foldable phone available for purchase. A recent update suggests that Xiaomi might also launch a tri-foldable smartphone soon.

Xiaomi Developing Tri-Foldable Phone

According to a Weibo post from tipster Smart Pikachu, Xiaomi has started the development of a tri-foldable smartphone. Unfortunately, no specific details about the phone’s specifications have been disclosed by the tipster.

Xiaomi’s tri-foldable phone is expected to be officially released in 2025. It is likely to come equipped with HyperOS 2.0, a camera system engineered by Leica, and a top-tier Snapdragon chipset.

Currently, Xiaomi offers two types of foldable phones. The Mix Fold 4, launched last month, is the fourth generation of the company’s horizontally foldable smartphones. Meanwhile, the Mix Flip, introduced alongside the Mix Fold 4, is Xiaomi’s first flip-style foldable screen phone.

Huawei’s Tri-Foldable Phone Launch

Reports suggest that Huawei’s tri-foldable smartphone may be launched in China as early as September. The image above shows Huawei’s Consumer Business Group CEO, Yu Richard, using the rumored device, offering a glimpse of its appearance in the folded state. It's speculated that the phone will feature a dual-hinge system, allowing it to unfold into a large screen of about 10 inches. The internal display is expected to include a camera punch-hole in the upper-left corner.

Huawei’s tri-foldable device is set to be powered by the company’s in-house Kirin chipset. The launch is expected in September, coinciding with the release of other products like the Nova 13 series smartphones and the Watch GT 5 series smartwatches.
