Volvo is set to introduce a range of completely electric versions of its S90 sedan, now called the ES90. This all-wheel-drive model features a substantial 106 kWh battery paired with dual motors, allowing it to achieve a range of up to 700 km based on the WLTP standard. With its advanced 800-volt technology, this vehicle can gain 300 km of range with just a brief 10-minute charge at a 350 kW fast charging station. Moreover, Volvo states that it can charge from 10% to 80% in a mere 20 minutes.
Advanced Electric Architecture
The ES90 marks Volvo’s first foray into 800-volt architecture, a technology already seen in other electric vehicles, like the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. When compared to the older 400-volt systems, this new architecture brings significant improvements in charge time, efficiency, and overall range. The adaptive charging software for this luxurious electric vehicle is developed by Breathe Battery Technologies, a company based in the US.
Built on a Strong Foundation
Like the EX90 premium SUV, the ES90 is constructed on the Scalable Product Architecture 2 (SPA2) platform. The next iteration, SPA3, is anticipated to debut later with the EX60. Additionally, the Volvo ES90 will incorporate what the company refers to as the “Volvo Cars Superset” tech stack, which is a unified set of hardware and software modules designed to support all future electric models from Volvo.
Safety and Innovation Combined
The Volvo ES90 luxury sedan is equipped with an extensive array of safety features known as “Volvo Safe Space.” Its exterior includes a lidar system, five radars, twelve ultrasound sensors, and eight traditional cameras. Inside, it has technology that can assess the driver’s behavior and take necessary actions to ensure the safety of all passengers.
Two Nvidia Drive AGX Orin processors supply the needed computing power for the car, and a Battery Pass contains details about the materials utilized in the vehicle’s battery. The official unveiling of the Volvo ES90 is scheduled for a livestream event on 5 March 2025.
