Vivo X Fold 4 to Include Side-Mounted Fingerprint Scanner

Oppo has officially announced that the Oppo Find N5 foldable smartphone will make its debut in China on February 20. This device is set to be the first foldable phone in the world to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Its sibling brand, Vivo, is also rumored to be developing the Snapdragon 8 Elite-equipped Vivo X Fold 4. However, recent reports suggest that the launch of the X Fold 4 has been pushed back to the second quarter of this year. A new tip from Digital Chat Station indicates that the X Fold 4 will feature a significant redesign.

Vivo’s New Design Choice

According to the latest leak, the Vivo X Fold 4 will do away with the in-screen fingerprint sensor. Instead, it will adopt a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, as revealed by DCS. In this leak, DCS mentioned that four Chinese smartphone makers are set to unveil horizontally foldable devices this year. While he didn’t name them directly, speculation points to the Oppo Find N5, Honor Magic V4, Vivo X Fold 4, and Huawei Mate X7 as likely candidates.

When it comes to Xiaomi, it appears they may not release the Mix Fold 5 this year. Nonetheless, reports indicate that Xiaomi hasn’t abandoned the concept of book-style foldable smartphones. The information also suggests that all four foldable devices will feature side-mounted fingerprint sensors. This marks a notable shift for Vivo, as their previous foldable models included dual in-screen fingerprint sensors for both the internal and external displays. The X Fold and X Fold+ utilized optical in-screen fingerprint scanners, while the X Fold 2 introduced ultrasonic sensors. The switch to side-facing sensors is believed to help decrease the overall thickness of upcoming foldables, aiming for a slim profile around 8mm. In comparison, the upcoming Find N5 is expected to be 9.2mm when folded.

Expected Specs of Vivo X Fold 4

Reports suggest that the Vivo X Fold 4 will be lightweight and slim, despite housing a battery with an impressive capacity of about 6000mAh. This device, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, is anticipated to support wireless charging and will feature an IPX8 water resistance rating. The rear camera setup is speculated to consist of a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom. Notably, it seems that Vivo will only launch the X Fold 4 this time, without a Pro variant like last year.
