  • ChatGPT for Windows: An Easy-to-Use Electron Web App

ChatGPT for Windows: An Easy-to-Use Electron Web App

Earlier this year, OpenAI launched the ChatGPT application for macOS. After a lengthy wait, the ChatGPT app is now available for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Nevertheless, it appears that the company didn’t invest much effort into its Windows release.

    Development Details

As reported by Windows Latest, the Windows version of the ChatGPT app is essentially a web wrapper built within an Electron container. Microsoft suggests using WebView2 for creating web applications. However, OpenAI opted for the Electron framework, which results in a significantly higher resource consumption compared to apps created with WebView2. The report states that Copilot for Windows 11, which utilizes WebView2, is under 600KB. In stark contrast, the Electron-based ChatGPT app takes up nearly 260 MB.

    Missed Opportunities

OpenAI could have provided a better experience by developing a native ChatGPT application for Windows as they did for macOS. Instead, they chose to release a web app. This choice seems particularly ironic given Microsoft’s substantial investment in OpenAI. Even if a full native app wasn’t feasible, at the very least, they could have used the WebView2 framework to create a web app that uses fewer resources.

    New Features and Limitations

On a brighter side, the ChatGPT app for Windows 11 includes a picture-in-picture mode, allowing users to interact with ChatGPT in a smaller window by pressing Alt+Space.

At present, the app is still in its early development stages, meaning its performance may not be ideal. Additionally, it is currently only accessible to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users.

  • Windows 11 24H2 Update: Fix Clipboard History Issues Quickly

Windows 11 24H2 Update: Fix Clipboard History Issues Quickly

Windows 11 24H2 has rolled out, bringing along exciting new AI features and other improvements to the system. However, as with previous updates, users are finding some bugs, including the pointer issue we mentioned earlier. Now, there is another problem: the clipboard history function is not working.

    Clipboard History Feature Overview

The clipboard history was first launched in the October 2018 Update of Windows 10. This feature’s purpose is to keep a record of all copied items. It not only tracks text but also can save a history of copied images. In Windows 11, the clipboard history got even better, allowing users to view their recently used GIFs and emojis as well.

    New Bug Reported

As per Windows Latest, there is an issue with the Windows 11 24H2 update where the clipboard displays a blank history.

If you happen to be one of those affected by this glitch, there’s a simple workaround you can try while waiting for Microsoft to resolve the problem.

    No Acknowledgment from Microsoft

At this time, Microsoft has not made any official statement regarding this clipboard issue.

Windows Latest has confirmed these findings.

  • Windows 24H2 Update: Removing Recall Breaks File Explorer

Windows 24H2 Update: Removing Recall Breaks File Explorer

When Microsoft revealed its AI-driven Recall feature, designed to create a searchable timeline of your desktop activities, there was a huge reaction from privacy advocates and tech enthusiasts online. Although the initial release of Recall was delayed, Microsoft appears to have made it quite challenging to use the modern features of Windows File Explorer on a PC without involving Recall. YouTuber Chris Titus Tech, who conducted tests and in-depth analysis on the new Windows 11 24H2 update, noted that while it is possible to turn off Recall, doing so in a user-friendly manner also turns off the modern Windows File Explorer.

    Discoveries from Testing

The YouTuber and software developer, recognized for his content on optimizing Windows and his automated tool for the same, found out during his tests that Recall is now a required part of Windows File Explorer. Titus’s tool, MicroWin, can eliminate Recall, but this action results in losing all the user-friendly features added in recent Windows updates. Essentially, this reverts the program back to something resembling its Windows 7 version (though with a few slightly newer icons), which includes losing dark mode and the File Explorer tabs.

    A Partial Solution

Titus managed to uncover a workaround that disables Recall rather than removing it completely, which thankfully seems to hold up after restarts. However, currently, there’s no way to completely eliminate Recall without impacting the File Explorer interface. When Microsoft initially postponed the Recall launch due to privacy concerns, they mentioned that the feature would be opt-in when it finally rolled out widely. Yet, this does not appear to be the case in the 24H2 update. For those who use this utility or don’t mind having Recall activated, it may not be a significant issue, but it does signal that Microsoft is fully committed to incorporating Recall and AI features into Windows in future updates.

    Alternatives and Tools

Another individual on GitHub highlighted that Microsoft’s DISM could be utilized to turn off the Recall service without affecting File Explorer. However, Titus noted that this behavior seems to vary, as his tests showed that the File Explorer’s appearance still changed after a restart. Regardless of this inconsistency, it’s doubtful that average Windows users will even know what DISM is, let alone how to operate it, showcasing Microsoft’s intent to rely on command-line tools for managing a controversial feature.

For those considering switching from Windows, the Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 is an excellent option for running Linux effectively, and it is priced starting at $685.20 in Lenovo’s US store.

  • Microsoft Officially Announces Release: Windows 11 24H2 instead of Windows 12

Microsoft Officially Announces Release: Windows 11 24H2 instead of Windows 12

Previous speculation about Microsoft moving away from a three-year update cycle for Windows turned out to be true. In an official blog post, Microsoft announced that “Windows 11 24H2” will be the major feature update for 2024, pushing the anticipated release of Windows 12 into 2025 or later.

Windows 11 24H2 Announced as Major Feature Update for 2024

Microsoft subtly revealed this strategy shift in the changelog for a recent Windows 11 Insider Preview Build. The changelog states:

“Starting with Build 26-xx today, Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels will see the versioning updated under Settings > System > About (and winver) to version 24H2. This denotes that Windows 11, version 24H2 will be this year’s annual feature update. As mentioned here, Windows 11 will have an annual feature update cadence that releases in the second half of the calendar year.”

The company is now clearly committed to one annual feature update for Windows 11, scheduled for release in the second half of each year. This marks a change from smaller, more frequent “Moments” updates seen in the past.

    Concerns about Userbase Fragmentation

This decision may stem from Microsoft’s concern about exacerbating userbase fragmentation. Windows 10 continues to hold a dominant 66% market share, while Windows 11 trails behind at 28%. Introducing Windows 12 in 2024 could further divide the Windows ecosystem, a situation Microsoft likely wants to avoid.

    AI-Powered Features and Advancements

Instead, users can expect substantial AI-powered features and other advancements with the Windows 11 24H2 update. The exact details of what these AI features will be are still up in the air, but we can expect more details to come out in the coming months.

However, previously rumored concepts, like a redesigned desktop interface with a “floating taskbar” as a characteristic of Windows 12 won’t materialize in the immediate future. So a significant visual overhaul for Windows is unlikely before 2025.

    Release Timing and Availability

Regarding release timing, Windows 11 24H2 builds will reach manufacturers (RTM) in April 2024. General public availability is tentatively expected sometime between September and October 2024.

Let us know your thoughts. Are you disappointed about the Windows 12 delay?

  • Latest Windows 11 Insider Build Sees Microsoft Parting Ways with WordPad

Latest Windows 11 Insider Build Sees Microsoft Parting Ways with WordPad

Farewell to WordPad and People App

Microsoft has announced that WordPad, the text editor that has been a part of Windows for nearly 30 years, will be removed from the operating system in a future update. The latest Windows 11 Insider build (26020) no longer includes WordPad, and this change is intended to be permanent. Users will not be able to reinstall the program through official channels after the stable build rolls out to the public.

The announcement was made on the Windows Insider Blog along with other new features of the Windows 11 Insider build (26020). These features include enhanced voice access tools and improved text-to-speech voices. However, the removal of WordPad stands out due to its long history and familiarity with many users. According to the blog post, starting with this build, WordPad and the People app will no longer be installed after doing a clean install of the OS. In a future flight, WordPad will be removed on upgrade, and it will not be reinstallable. The blog post also mentions that WordPad is a deprecated Windows feature.

WordPad has not received updates in years and was considered to be somewhere between a basic notepad and a full-fledged word processor. While it was free and did not require internet access, most users have found better alternatives elsewhere. Therefore, the removal of WordPad is not a huge surprise.

In addition to WordPad, the People app will also be removed, and the Steps Recorder will no longer receive updates. Microsoft suggests ClipChamp as a potential replacement for the Steps Recorder.

Updates to Notepad and Other Additions

While WordPad is bidding farewell, Notepad, the reliable text editor, continues to see changes. The latest build of Windows 11 adds some improvements to Notepad, including accessibility tweaks for voice control and the ability to pause and resume printing. However, some users may find the constant tinkering with Notepad unnecessary.

Apart from these changes, the new build of Windows 11 brings a few other noteworthy additions. Users will now receive a notification when their computer is in energy saver mode, which can be helpful in managing power consumption. Additionally, users can now give their devices more descriptive names, making it easier to share and identify them.

Overall, while the removal of WordPad may disappoint some longtime users, it is clear that Microsoft is focusing on enhancing other features and providing better alternatives for text editing and productivity. Users can explore various third-party applications that offer more advanced functionality and modern design.

As a Beta Build, Insiders have had access to numerous changes over the past few weeks, including the addition of a character counter to Notepad in Windows 11.

    Discontinuation of Windows Speech Recognition

Microsoft has made the decision to discontinue Windows Speech Recognition, a feature that was initially introduced with Windows Vista. This move highlights the increasing importance of voice access as a crucial capability. Voice access is more powerful and is regularly updated with new capabilities.

New Features in Windows 11 Beta Build

Extended Language Support, Multi-Screen, and Voice Shortcuts

Windows 11 Beta Build introduces several new features. It includes extended language support, allowing Windows to expand speech capabilities for additional languages such as German, French (France), Spanish (Spain), and Spanish (Mexico). Additionally, multi-display support has been improved, enabling users to utilize voice access capabilities across multiple displays. This includes number and grid overlays that were previously only accessible on the primary display. Microsoft is also introducing voice shortcuts and custom commands for users to make their instructions, specifically for English voice access users.

    Improved Discoverability of Screencasting

Windows 11 now offers improved discoverability of screencasting. Users can now wirelessly expand their display to nearby PCs, TVs, or other external displays using Casting on their Windows PC. Microsoft has made updates to emphasize the discoverability of Cast in Windows 11, including providing the option to Cast via a notification toast while multitasking on the PC. They have also enhanced the Cast flyout in Quick Settings to address connecting issues and finding adjacent displays.

New Features and Improvements in Windows 365 Boot

Windows 365 Boot introduces a dedicated mode, allowing users to boot up to their Windows 365 Cloud PC using their assigned company-owned device. This mode offers password-less authentication techniques like Windows Hello for Business for easy login. The dedicated mode also includes features such as remembering usernames, displaying photos on the lock and login screens, and a quick account switcher experience. Windows 365 Boot users will have access to a private preview of this functionality in early 2024.

Windows 365 Boot also allows organizations to personalize the login page in shared mode with their Intune business logo. Additionally, a fail-fast mechanism has been implemented to alert users in advance if there are network problems or unfinished setups during the Cloud PC sign-in process. Users can now also manage local PC settings through Windows 365 Boot, making it easier to view and control device-specific settings.

New Features and Enhancements in Windows 365 Switch

Windows 365 Switch now offers an improved disconnect experience, allowing users to disconnect directly from their local PC to their Cloud PC. The desktop indicators have been updated to differentiate between Cloud PC and local PC, displaying “Cloud PC” and “Local PC” on the desktop indication. Users will also receive updates on the Cloud PC connection status and the connection timeout indicator while on the connection page. In case of errors, a copy button has been included to quickly fix mistakes by copying the correlation ID from the error screen.

    Other General Updates

Windows Speech Recognition has been replaced with voice access in Windows 11. Voice access is a new assistive technology that utilizes on-device speech recognition to create text and manage the computer without requiring an internet connection. Nearby Sharing has been added, allowing users to give their device a more friendly name for easier sharing. Narrator users can now dictate text, use voice interaction with screen components, and utilize voice access to launch programs. Task Manager now allows users to choose the dump file location when generating one for a process. A bug related to the backdrop bouncing when switching between desktops has been fixed.

    Notepad Update

Windows is distributing a Notepad update (version 11.2311.33.0) via the Beta Channel to Windows Insiders. This update brings enhancements such as the ability to quickly open and edit files in Notepad directly from File Explorer. A character count display has also been added to the status bar, allowing users to keep track of the length of their documents.

    Enabling Windows 11 Beta Build

All Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel will now be running the same build, 22635.xxxx, through an enablement package. To receive the latest updates as soon as they become available, Windows Insiders can enable the option in Settings > Windows Update.

These updates and features demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to improving the user experience and accessibility of Windows 11. Users can expect more enhancements and improvements as Windows 11 continues to evolve.
