Yotei Director Promises Japanese Roots for Franchise Launch

    Key Takeaways

    1. Exclusive Launch: Ghost of Yotei will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025, continuing the franchise’s focus on Japanese culture.

    2. Commitment to Japanese Heritage: Sucker Punch Studios emphasizes that the series will remain rooted in feudal Japan, with the katana as a central element of the gameplay.

    3. New Protagonist: The game introduces a new female character, Atsu, whose story revolves around revenge during a significant historical period following the Battle of Sekigahara.

    4. Dynamic Environments: The development team visited Hokkaido to capture its landscapes, making the game’s combat and exploration feel more alive and unpredictable compared to previous titles.

    5. Future Series Direction: The franchise will continue to explore the samurai period in Japan, with potential new settings and time periods, but will maintain certain boundaries to preserve its essence.

Ghost of Yotei is set to launch exclusively for the PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Sucker Punch Studios has made it clear that the series will stay true to its Japanese heritage and its well-known weaponry. This commitment ensures that future editions will continue to focus on the cultural aspects of the land of the rising sun.

    Commitment to Japanese Roots

In a recent interview with the Filipino news site Ungeek, Brian Fleming, the studio head and founder, spoke about the rumors surrounding potential expansions of the series. He emphasized that moving away from feudal Japan would compromise the essence of the game. Fleming remarked:

“We believe the core of Ghost is someone wielding a katana, that’s part of the essence. We can’t imagine a Ghost game set in, say, Feudal Europe. That doesn’t make sense. There are plenty of games set there, but that’s not what a Ghost game is.”

    The Beauty of Japan

He also pointed out how essential Japan’s landscapes are to the game, saying, “For us, the natural beauty of Japan is part of the essence of a Ghost game. I gave this answer on stage at Tokyo Game Show, and I think the fans in Japan really appreciated that. That’s the way we see it. It will always have that core, open-world katana adventure of some kind.”

These statements from Sucker Punch Studios’ leader come just a few days before the game’s launch, which takes players to the rugged northern frontier of Ezo in 1603, now known as modern-day Hokkaido. Ghost of Yotei leads gamers to the base of Mount Yotei, also called Ezo Fuji.

    A New Protagonist

In contrast to the previous installment, which was set during the 1274 Mongol Invasion of Tsushima Island in the late Kamakura period, Yotei introduces a new female character, Atsu. She is motivated by revenge during a time of changing power dynamics after the Battle of Sekigahara.

The development team from Sucker Punch made several trips to Hokkaido and visited Shiretoko National Park to capture the region’s “alive” and “dangerous” environments. These visits have influenced the game’s combat and exploration, making them feel more dynamic and unpredictable compared to Tsushima.

    Future of the Series

As for Fleming’s insights on the series, it looks like players can expect more games in the Ghost franchise, all set in the Japanese samurai period. This period spans from the late 12th century, with the rise of the Kamakura shogunate, to the late 1870s, when the Meiji Restoration ended the samurai era and ushered in modernization.

With Tsushima setting the timeline in 1274 and Yotei moving forward to 1603, there is still a lot of historical ground left to cover. The series could venture into the tumultuous Sengoku period’s civil wars or the stable yet fascinating Edo era.

    Boundaries of Exploration

However, Fleming did mention some self-imposed limitations for the series. He suggested that while the game might explore different areas like central Honshu or Kyushu, it will never expand into a multi-era saga like Assassin’s Creed. He added, “Now, we may change time periods, we may explore different settings, but I think there are some boundaries we probably won’t cross.”

  • Sucker Punch Studios May Return to Infamous After Ghost of Yotei

Sucker Punch Studios May Return to Infamous After Ghost of Yotei

    Key Takeaways

    1. Nate Fox, the creative director of Sucker Punch Studios, expressed a desire to return to the Infamous franchise but emphasized that it will take time due to current commitments to Ghost of Yotei.
    2. Sucker Punch is currently focused on finishing Ghost of Yotei, which features new gameplay elements and is set for release on October 2, 2025.
    3. The Infamous series, launched in 2009, includes three main games and several expansions, selling over 10 million copies in total.
    4. Despite past statements indicating no plans for a new Infamous game, Fox’s recent comments suggest a potential revival after the completion of Ghost of Yotei.
    5. Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603 Hokkaido and follows the story of Atsu seeking revenge on the Yotei Six, generating significant excitement among fans.

Fans of the Infamous series got a glimmer of hope this week when Nate Fox, the creative director of Sucker Punch Studios, shared his wish to return to the franchise. However, he mentioned that it will take some time before we see another game since the studio is currently busy with the development of Ghost of Yotei.

    Exciting Developments Ahead

In a chat with Game Informer, Fox discussed the exciting new features of Ghost of Yotei. When the topic of the Infamous series came up, Nate Fox was very open about his thoughts.

He expressed his passion for the franchise, stating, “I would love to work on more Infamous. I would love to see a trilogy release, but Sucker Punch is a one game at a time shop, and right now we are very focused on finishing Ghost of Yotei.”

    A Legacy of Success

The original Infamous was launched in 2009, introducing players to Cole MacGrath, a courier who becomes a superhero. The game received a lot of praise, which led to the release of Infamous 2 in 2011 and Infamous: Second Son in 2014.

The franchise also had standalone expansions like First Light and Festival of Blood, selling over 10 million copies in total, with the first Infamous and Second Son making up 7.3 million of those sales. Even with all the critical acclaim and impressive Metacritic scores, the series has not seen a new entry in over ten years.

    Potential Future for Infamous

Nate has been involved in all three main games of the Infamous series, so it wouldn’t be shocking if the studio decided to revisit the franchise. Although Sucker Punch previously said in 2022 that it had “no plans” to bring back Infamous, Nate Fox’s latest comments imply that there might be a chance for the studio to restart the franchise after finishing Ghost of Yotei, possibly followed by a DLC.

As for Ghost of Yotei, it has created immense excitement since its reveal during the PlayStation State of Play in September 2024. The game is set in the year 1603 in Hokkaido and tells the story of Atsu, who seeks revenge on the Yotei Six. It is scheduled to be released on October 2, 2025, exclusively for the Sony PlayStation 5.

  • Yotei Leak Fails as Redditor Faces Mockery Before State of Play

Yotei Leak Fails as Redditor Faces Mockery Before State of Play

    Key Takeaways

    1. Development footage of Ghost of Yotei was leaked by an individual who spied on Sucker Punch Studio’s headquarters from a hotel room.
    2. The leak was poorly timed, as Sony had announced an official gameplay showcase for the game on July 10, 2025.
    3. The Reddit post sharing the leak was quickly removed, and the individual faced mockery for their actions.
    4. Ethical concerns were raised about invading the studio’s privacy for game footage, with some users criticizing the behavior.
    5. Ghost of Yotei is a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, featuring a female lead named Atsu, and is set for release on PS5 on October 2, 2025.

Development footage of Ghost of Yotei has reportedly been leaked in a surprising way. An online detective took it upon themselves to sneak a look at Sucker Punch Studio’s Bellevue Headquarters to catch a glimpse of the game in progress. Rather than being celebrated as a hero, the sleuth found themselves facing mockery from many.

    The Leak’s Unfortunate Timing

The individual shared their findings on Reddit, but the post was quickly removed. It featured them trying to look through the windows of Sucker Punch Studios, where they claimed to see what seemed to be Ghost of Yotei. The footage was captured from a hotel room that overlooked the studio’s location in City Center Plaza, Washington.

Despite the redditor’s excitement in sharing the leak, they were met with disapproval from users across the platform. The timing of this amateur spying was especially criticized since Sony had already announced that the “official State of Play for Ghost of Yotei,” set for July 10, 2025, will showcase almost 20 minutes of gameplay. This event will be presented by Sucker Punch’s creative directors, Nate Fox and Jason Conell.

    Ethical Concerns Raised

Alongside the laughter and teasing, one redditor pointed out the moral issues involved, saying, “No one deserves their privacy to be ruined just to give us glimpses of video games.”

The irony in this whole scenario is hard to ignore. Ghost of Yotei was first revealed on September 25, 2024, with a mix of cutscenes and in-game footage. A follow-up trailer came out on April 23, 2025, giving more details about the narrative and the villains in Ghost of Yotei.

    Game Details and Release Date

As of now, we know that Ghost of Yotei serves as a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. The game is set in 1603, nearly three centuries after the events of the original title. Unlike Jin Sakai, the new game features a female lead, Atsu, who wears the “Ghost mask” and embarks on a mission for revenge in the area around Mount Yotei, which is now called Hokkaido.

Ghost of Yotei is planned for an exclusive PS5 launch on October 2, 2025. Sony is also considering a PC version of the game, which may come out in late 2026, according to their current timeline for PlayStation PC releases.
