What to Expect from OxygenOS 15: Key Features and Updates

OnePlus is set to unveil its latest version of the custom software, OxygenOS 15, soon. The beta program is likely to begin this month or early next month, with a stable version expected to roll out around November. Thanks to various leaks, we already have insights into the new features and changes that OxygenOS 15, based on Android 15, will bring.

What Can You Anticipate in OxygenOS 15?

    1. Updated Control Center
Although Android 15 itself doesn’t feature many UI changes, OxygenOS 15 aims to enhance this area significantly. The redesigned control center may take inspiration from iOS and HyperOS. It is rumored to include two large toggles at the top, similar to HyperOS, a 2×2 media player, a 1×2 brightness slider, and a 1×2 volume panel below that. Additionally, numerous 1×1 circular toggles for quick settings are expected.

This control center is designed to be a single scrollable page with customizable options, allowing users to rearrange icons and hide or show specific settings, similar to the capabilities in iOS 18. Users can also easily revert to the previous layout if desired. Furthermore, OxygenOS 15 might separate the control center from the notification area, where swiping down from the right reveals the control center and swiping from the left shows notifications.

    2. The Return of the Never Settle Easter Egg
Long-time OnePlus fans may be pleased to see the comeback of the Never Settle easter egg in this update. Users can activate this feature by typing ‘1+’ in the Calculator app and hitting the equals button (‘=’).

    3. iOS-Inspired Enhancements
OxygenOS 15 might introduce features reminiscent of iOS, such as a Dynamic Island-like function, which would position new screen details at the center punch hole instead of the left side. The Camera app may also see a return of the Live Photos feature, allowing users to capture short video clips alongside photos, akin to iOS’s offering. Additionally, the volume slider is rumored to be redesigned to mimic iOS, starting large and narrowing upon further presses.

    Customizations and Battery Features

    4. Lock Screen Personalization
Expect several customization options for the lock screen in OxygenOS 15, potentially including a 3D lock screen. Users may have the ability to change the size, position, color, and font of the lock screen clock, with various presets available.

    5. Video Battery Saver
An intriguing new feature named “Video battery saver” has been identified in early Android 15 builds. This feature aims to optimize battery consumption when using specific video applications. While it may extend battery life, it could slightly impact the video-watching experience.

In addition to OnePlus’s enhancements, the upcoming update will incorporate numerous features from Android 15.

    New Features from Android 15

    6. Satellite Connectivity Support
Android 15 will include satellite connectivity support, allowing users to send text messages without cellular coverage, as long as they have a clear view of the sky. This feature may require special hardware and carrier support, enabling SMS, MMS, and RCS apps to utilize satellite functionality.

    7. Theft Detection Lock
One of the standout features introduced in Android 15 is the theft detection lock, designed to safeguard user data and deter device theft. This feature employs Google’s AI to recognize if a phone has been stolen and will lock the device automatically to prevent unauthorized access. Even if a thief performs a factory reset, they won’t be able to activate the device without the original Google account details.

    8. Split App Pairs
Another useful addition is the ability to create shortcuts for favorite pairs of split-screen applications, enhancing usability on larger devices.

    9. App Archiving
Android 15 will also allow users to uninstall apps while retaining user data, similar to the offloading feature on iPhones. This means there will be no data loss, and users can pick up right where they left off after reinstalling the app. While app archiving is already available via the Google Play Store, Android 15 aims to integrate this feature at the OS level, enabling users to archive or restore apps from any source.

    10. AI Innovations
As with every major update, OxygenOS 15 will feature new AI capabilities. While the specifics are still unclear, some enhancements will come from OnePlus’s development, while others will be part of Android 15.

There will likely be many more features and improvements in OxygenOS 15, which we will discover upon its official release.

  • Vivo Phones Get Stable Android 15 Update Ahead of Pixel 9

Vivo Phones Get Stable Android 15 Update Ahead of Pixel 9

Vivo has made headlines by becoming the first brand to roll out Android 15 to its users. Their customized interface, Funtouch OS 15, is being distributed to select flagship models ahead of updates from both Google and Samsung. Although the official release is set for September 30, some fortunate Vivo users are already enjoying the features of Android 15.

    Vivo Leads the Update Rollout

Historically, Google and Samsung have been the frontrunners in delivering significant Android updates through their Pixel and Galaxy devices. For instance, the Pixel 9 series is still anticipating its Android 15 update, which is expected to start in mid-October. Meanwhile, Samsung has not disclosed its update timeline, making it evident that they are currently lagging behind Vivo.

    Eligible Vivo Devices

So, which Vivo devices are getting early access to Android 15? The update is being rolled out to the Vivo X100 series, Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, and the iQOO 12.

New Features in Funtouch OS 15

For users of these devices, Funtouch OS 15 introduces several new features in addition to what Android 15 offers. One standout feature is an AI-driven “Eraser” tool in the Gallery app, similar to the Magic Eraser found in Google Photos. Photo editing fans will also appreciate the shadow removal tool.

Moreover, Funtouch OS 15 comes with a Live Transcribe feature that shows spoken words on the screen, enhancing accessibility for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Android 15 itself includes useful functionalities like Private Space for managing personal applications—a feature that Vivo already provides—and the ability to share a portion of the screen for secure collaboration.

A New Chapter in Android Updates

The most significant aspect of this update is Vivo’s impressive lead in the update race. This marks a notable occasion where an Android update has reached non-Pixel devices before Google’s own flagship series.

While it’s still early in this update cycle, it will be interesting to see if Vivo can sustain this lead in future updates. For now, users of compatible Vivo devices can take pride in being among the first to experience the benefits of Android 15.

After a long wait, the launch of Android 15 is just around the corner. The stable version will initially be available for Google Pixel devices in October, with other Android smartphone manufacturers following soon after.

    Custom Skins in Development

Various brands are already designing their custom interfaces based on the new Android OS. For instance, OnePlus is working on OxygenOS 15, while Samsung is developing One UI 7. Realme, on the other hand, is set to introduce Realme UI 6.0, which will be based on Android 15. This new version is anticipated to include numerous enhancements, fresh features, and AI improvements.

In this article, we will provide information about the release date of Realme UI 6.0, which devices will be compatible, and what new features to expect.

Release Timeline for Realme UI 6.0

Currently, Realme has not disclosed a specific launch date for Realme UI 6.0, nor has it announced the start of its beta program. However, the company is likely to make an announcement soon. Other brands will also delay their updates as they need more time to finalize their own custom skins.

Realme has already launched the Android 15 beta for the Realme 12 Pro+ 5G, although it does not feature Realme UI 6.0. Typically, the brand reveals the beta version of its new skin based on the new OS prior to the public release for Google Pixels. Last year, the beta for Realme UI 5.0, which was based on Android 14, was announced on September 21. As of now, there has been no announcement regarding the Realme UI 6.0 beta, but we can expect news shortly. This list is not official and has been created based on the update policy and previous rollouts. We will update it once the official list is available.

Anticipated Features in Realme UI 6.0

For those hoping for significant visual changes, Android 15 may not meet expectations, similar to recent Android updates. However, it promises a variety of exciting new features, improvements, and AI enhancements worth exploring.

As the Realme UI 6.0 beta has not yet been released, details on what new features will be introduced remain unclear. Nonetheless, insights from the Android 15 beta provide some information on expected changes.

A standout feature of Android 15 is the Theft Detection Lock, which utilizes Google AI to recognize when your device is stolen and promptly locks it to safeguard your information. In the event that a thief manages to factory reset the device, they won’t be able to activate it without your Google account credentials, making the device essentially unusable.

Additionally, Android 15 introduces satellite connectivity support, enabling users to send texts even without nearby cell towers, although this may require specific hardware and carrier support.

Another useful feature is the ability to create shortcuts for preferred pairs of split-screen apps, which is a time-saver for those managing multiple applications in split-screen mode. The new OS will also allow partial screen sharing, enabling users to record or share just one app rather than the entire screen.

Furthermore, Google has announced native earthquake detection specifically for U.S. users. A new high-quality webcam mode will allow your Android phone to function as a webcam for a PC.

  • Android 15 Instant Hotspot Not Compatible with Samsung Devices

Android 15 Instant Hotspot Not Compatible with Samsung Devices

As Android 15 gears up for its launch later this year, Google is making final adjustments to its new features. One notable addition is Instant Hotspot, a handy tool that enables Android tablets and Chromebooks to effortlessly connect to a phone’s hotspot. However, recent findings indicate that this feature will not be accessible on Samsung Galaxy devices.

Instant Hotspot enhances the ease of connecting your tablet or Chromebook to your phone’s internet. When nearby and lacking Wi-Fi, a prompt will appear on your device, urging you to connect to the phone’s hotspot. It’s a straightforward and user-friendly experience.

    Familiar Territory for Galaxy Users

For those using Galaxy devices, this might seem recognizable. Samsung’s One UI already includes a similar function named Auto Hotspot. Both features serve the same purpose of linking your tablet or Chromebook to your phone’s internet.

The main distinction is in compatibility. Google’s Instant Hotspot is compatible with any Android tablet and Chromebook, whereas Samsung’s Auto Hotspot is restricted to Galaxy devices that are part of the same Samsung account or family group.

    Impact on Galaxy Users

Although Samsung users have been benefiting from Auto Hotspot for some time, the lack of Instant Hotspot in Android 15 won’t significantly impact their experience. If you exclusively use Samsung Galaxy devices, you won’t miss out on the advantages of Instant Hotspot.

However, if you were looking forward to using Auto Hotspot with other Android tablets or Chromebooks, you might be disappointed when Android 15 is released.

    Speculations on Feature Exclusion

The reason why the Instant Hotspot feature won’t be available on Galaxy devices remains unclear. The feature is part of Google Play Services, which is accessible on all Google-certified Android devices, including Samsung’s.

Samsung probably chose to exclude this feature due to its overlap with their existing Auto Hotspot. Nonetheless, with the introduction of Instant Hotspot, the practicality of Auto Hotspot seems somewhat diminished.

Motorola has not yet released an official list of devices slated for the Android 15 upgrade. Typically, the brand offers three major Android updates for select mid-range and flagship devices, while entry-level phones usually receive only one significant OS update. The list provided above includes Motorola devices expected to receive the Android 15 update, subject to updates based on the latest Android 14 information.

    Anticipated Rollout Timeline

Google is expected to wrap up the Android 15 beta phase by June 2024, during which new features are tested and existing issues are addressed. Following this phase, the OS enters the platform stability phase for further refinements and bug fixes in preparation for the final release.

In 2023, Google released Android 14 in October alongside the Pixel 8 series, leading many to anticipate a similar timeline for Android 15. The new OS release may coincide with the introduction of Google’s next flagship smartphone series, Pixel 9, potentially being the first devices to feature Android 15 out of the box.

While Motorola has faced challenges with timely software updates in the past, the brand initiated the stable Android 14 rollout earlier this year. However, compared to competitors like Samsung and OnePlus, Motorola’s update process has been relatively slower. It is hoped that Motorola will improve its update pace with Android 15, although it is unlikely that the stable rollout will commence immediately after the Android 15 release, possibly not until December.

Android 15 Update Introduces Satellite Connectivity Support at OS Level

Google is moving forward with the preview phase of Android 15 by unveiling Developer Preview 2 (DP2). This follow-up to the initial preview release from last month is primarily focused on assisting developers in preparing their apps for the upcoming operating system. A public beta launch is anticipated for April.

Android 15 Developer Preview 2: Overview

One of the key enhancements in Android 15 DP2 is the inclusion of support for satellite connectivity at the core operating system level. This update incorporates user interface (UI) elements that aim to deliver a consistent user experience for devices linked to satellites.

    Android 15 Satellite Connectivity

Applications now have the capability to identify if a device is utilizing a satellite network and can adjust their functionality accordingly. Furthermore, essential messaging services like SMS/MMS and pre-installed RCS apps are empowered to leverage satellite connections for communication purposes.

Improved PDF Handling and Other Enhancements

Android 15 DP2 brings about improvements in handling PDFs within applications, making tasks such as rendering password-protected PDFs, annotations, in-document search, editing, and selection more seamless for developers. These PDF renderer updates will be delivered through Google Play system updates, independent of major Android releases, resulting in a faster and less resource-intensive local PDF viewing experience on Android 15.

    Other Enhancements

Developers can now tailor how their apps are presented on the smaller cover screens of flip-style foldable phones. Additionally, Android 15 introduces features such as app detection to enhance user privacy, a new loudness standard for improved audio consistency, and further customization options in the Do Not Disturb mode, allowing users to prioritize specific rules and activate actions like a black-and-white display, night mode, and wallpaper dimming.
