McMillen described Mewgenics as “the weirdest project I’ve ever worked on.” Given the lengthy development period, the journey of creating Mewgenics has been quite bumpy. Initially, Team Meat presented the game as a sequel to Super Meat Boy, intending to blend elements of Pokémon, The Sims, and Animal Crossing.

Shifting Focus

However, priorities changed, leading McMillen to work on The Legend of Bum-bo. In 2018, he regained the rights from Team Meat and resumed development of Mewgenics alongside Glaiel. The game now boasts over 200 hours of gameplay, more than 800 distinct items, 200 enemies, and a library of over 1,200 abilities.

Originally, Mewgenics was supposed to release in 2025, but it was delayed to 2026 due to a shift in strategy. McMillen explained on Steam, “Launching in November or December is really complicated.
