While the iPhone 17's release in 2026 is still a ways off, speculation about Apple’s next-generation flagship is already making the rounds. The newest leak highlights a potential enhancement to the front-facing camera.
According to analyst Jeff Pu, whose research note was shared by MacRumors, all four models of the iPhone 17 – including the base model, the tentatively named “Slim” version, as well as the Pro and Pro Max variants – are set to feature a 24-megapixel front camera.
Apple has utilized a 12MP selfie camera since the iPhone 11, continuing through to the current iPhone 15 Pro Max. Jeff Pu’s information suggests that the iPhone 16 series will also retain the 12MP front-facing camera, with the upgrade anticipated to debut with the iPhone 17 series.
Sharper and More Detailed Images
The increase in megapixels should lead to clearer images with enhanced detail. The rumored 24MP camera is expected to incorporate a six-element plastic lens, providing additional benefits.
Jeff Pu indicates that low-light performance could see substantial improvement, making for better selfies and video calls under poor lighting conditions. Augmented reality (AR) applications, which depend heavily on precise depth perception, could also benefit from this upgraded camera configuration.
Furthermore, Apple’s Face ID facial recognition system, which is already considered top-tier in smartphone security, might become even more accurate with the enhanced camera.
Backing from Other Analysts
The rumors about the iPhone 17’s front camera gain further credibility when considering analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s earlier prediction. In January 2024, Kuo also suggested that Apple would equip the iPhone 17 lineup with a 24-megapixel front camera featuring a six-element lens.
With both Pu and Kuo, two highly respected analysts, pointing to the same camera upgrade, the likelihood of a significantly enhanced front camera on the iPhone 17 seems more plausible.
Looking Ahead
With over a year until the official launch, specifics about the iPhone 17 are expected to remain tentative. However, these early leaks provide a glimpse into the areas where Apple might be concentrating its efforts for the 2026 flagship lineup.
