Renowned director Hideo Kojima is proving yet again why he’s such a unique force in the gaming world. The legendary creator behind Death Stranding 2 and the Metal Gear series has shared in a recent interview that he’s working completely alone on his PlayStation-exclusive action-espionage project, currently at a conceptual phase.

Kojima’s New Project

Details about Physint are scarce, but Kojima has characterized it as the “culmination” of his career. While he is busy with OD and making adjustments to Death Stranding 2, there’s still a long way to go before we can experience this spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid. In a conversation with IndieWire, Kojima mentioned:

“I also am starting to work with the team on OD because that’s a new project, and also doing Physint all by myself because that’s at the conceptual stage. So I’m doing that. And also I have all these interviews every day, and also promotional photo-shootings, things like that – so I don’t feel like I’ve finished Death Stranding 2, to be frank.”

The Legacy Continues

Unveiled during Sony’s January 2024 PlayStation State of Play, Physint is intended to be the next chapter in the Metal Gear Solid legacy. Kojima was a pioneer in creating the stealth-action genre, with the first Metal Gear released on the MSX2 home computer in 1987. He parted ways with Konami at the end of 2015 after completing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Even though the game is still in its early stages, Kojima has already showcased his talent with the impressive visuals of Death Stranding 2 using the Decima engine. He promises that Physint will employ advanced technology, merging video gaming with film. Kojima hinted at the level of visual engagement we might expect from Physint:

“If your mom walks in and sees you playing, she’ll think you’re watching a movie.”

Balancing Multiple Projects

Kojima is tackling Physint solo while also managing other projects. Currently, he is analyzing player data for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which was released on June 26, 2025, for the PS5. He’s studying weapon usage and player paths to identify bugs and technical problems to fix.

Additionally, he is collaborating with his team at Kojima Productions on an Xbox-exclusive horror game, OD, featuring actors like Hunter Schafer and Sophia Lillis, and developed in partnership with Microsoft and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Even though OD is already in the works, Kojima noted that the project faced delays due to the 2024 SAG-AFTRA video game actors’ strike, which extended into 2025.

Fans have been encouraging Kojima to return to the stealth-action genre he perfected over the years. After founding Kojima Productions and releasing Death Stranding, Kojima remarked, “A lot of people wanted me to do something similar to Metal Gear.”

However, the wait might be longer than fans hope, as Kojima has estimated a release window of “five or six years,” which could coincide with the launch of the Sony PlayStation 6.
