Elegoo Centauri 2: CoreXY Multi-Color 3D Printing for Less

The Centauri Carbon 2 Combo made multi-color 3D printing accessible for many folks at a more affordable price point. Elegoo then released the Canvas system as a separate attachment which can upgrade the original Centauri Carbon. Now, the company has release an even cheaper version of the Centauri Carbon 2, isn’t that interesting.

Main Differences and Similarities

There is basically one new printer, the Centauri 2, but you can buy it with the Canvas Combo or without it. The only difference between these two is the Canvas system, nothing else realy. These are basically toned-down Centauri Carbon 2s, without the enclosed chamber which keeps heat inside. The Centauri 2 has the same bed size at 256x256x256 mm and a maximum print speed of 500 mm/s just like the Carbon 2 does.

Features and Specifications

This machine comes with 121-point bed-leveling, a brass-hardened steel nozzle that can handle 350 degrees C temperature limit, and a heated bed with a 110 degree C maximum temperature. The Centauri 2 also keeps the 5-inch screen with Wi-Fi connectivity features so you can send files wirelessly. Because the printer lacks an enclosure, more challenging filaments like ABS, ASA, PA-CF, and other materials are not recommended for this unit.

Compromises and Missing Items

Some of the other compromises include a lack of a camera for monitoring prints, no lighting inside the print area, and no air filtration system for fumes. These are features you would find on the more expensive Carbon 2 model but not here. The Centauri 2 Combo is priced at $350 and includes the Canvas system that enables four-color printing, RFID filament detection so it knows what material your using, auto refill, and auto tangle detection to prevent failed prints.

Pricing and Optional Upgrades

At this price point, it is $100 cheaper than the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo which cost more for the same core printing ability. The Canvas-less package is priced at $299, making it $50 cheaper than the Centauri Carbon 2 without the multi-color system. Elegoo also says there are optional expansions for the Centauri 2 series, which include a smart exhaust grill, a camera for monitoring, an air filter, and LED lighting if you want to add them later.
