Key Takeaways
1. Dolby Vision vs. HDR10+: Dolby Vision typically offers better image quality than HDR10+, but this is not always the case in gaming.
2. Challenges in Gaming: Many games have inconsistent implementation of Dolby Vision, prompting TV manufacturers to explore alternatives like HLG.
3. Dolby Vision 2 Update: The upcoming Dolby Vision 2, announced at IFA 2025, aims to address existing challenges and enhance image quality.
4. Content Intelligence Feature: Dolby Vision 2 introduces Content Intelligence, featuring AI tools that improve image quality based on user viewing habits.
5. Authentic Motion Processing: A new feature called Authentic Motion will enhance motion processing, aiming for a more cinematic experience without unwanted judder.
When discussing HDR brightness and how colors are shown, Dolby Vision is said to provide superior image quality when compared to the HDR10+ standard. However, this doesn’t hold true all the time, particularly in gaming. While many films look better with Dolby Vision, several games have a less reliable implementation of the technology. To address this issue, TV manufacturers are offering the HLG alternative. Dolby has recognized these challenges and has been working on solutions for some time. They aim to resolve these problems and introduce significant enhancements with the new Dolby Vision 2 update, which was recently revealed at IFA 2025.
CANAL+ Joins the Effort
CANAL+, a major player in French media and entertainment, has announced its commitment to help promote the Dolby Vision 2 standard. The company plans to release a range of movies, TV shows, and sports broadcasts that will be encoded using the new standard. Moreover, Hisense will be the first television manufacturer to support Dolby Vision 2, featuring its upcoming RGB-MiniLED TV models powered by the MediaTek Pentonic 800 and equipped with the “MiraVision Pro” PQ Engine.
Features of Dolby Vision 2
Dolby asserts that the updated version of the Dolby Vision standard incorporates a feature called Content Intelligence. This innovative addition comes with new AI-driven tools aimed at improving image quality based on what users are viewing and where they are viewing it from.
The new Content Intelligence toolkit has three primary components:
One of the highlights of Dolby Vision 2 is the introduction of a bi-directional tone-mapping algorithm. This allows high-performance televisions to achieve increased brightness, enhanced contrast, and more vibrant colors, all while maintaining the artistic vision of creators.
Enhancing Motion Processing
In addition, Dolby aims to augment motion processing with a feature named Authentic Motion. This is touted as “the world’s first creative-driven motion control tool” designed to make scenes appear more authentically cinematic without introducing undesired judder on a shot-by-shot basis.
There will be two variations of this new standard:
Dolby has yet to clarify whether the new standard can be supported by existing OLED and MiniLED televisions as an upgrade. More information is expected to be shared at IFA 2025.
