  • $649 Galaxy Watch Ultra’s Paint Peels Off After Days of Use

$649 Galaxy Watch Ultra’s Paint Peels Off After Days of Use

Samsung’s recently released Galaxy Buds 3 Pro was withdrawn from the market due to significant quality problems. Now, the company’s latest high-end watch, the Galaxy Watch Ultra, is encountering a paint peeling issue. This information comes from a Reddit user named bimmerb0ii.

The user received his pre-ordered Galaxy Watch Ultra (grey model) on the 19th of this month and reportedly wore it even while sleeping. Only after a few days when he took it off for charging did he notice that the paint was already peeling off at the back of the watch above the bottom left screw. You can see it in the image above. He also mentioned that he avoided the gym and had been ‘babying’ the product since he got it. So it’s unclear why the paint started peeling off within such a short period.

Only the Titanium Gray Model Seems to Have the Issue

This issue, however, seems to be limited to the grey color option. The white and silver options apparently only have paint on the bezel and partly on the sides.

Fortunately, bimmerb0ii had a chat with Samsung Text Support. The company asked the user to visit an authorized service center. According to the user, the authorized service center he visited didn’t have any replacement parts for the Galaxy Watch Ultra (at least at that time). So they advised the user to call Samsung for a replacement.

    Replacement Process

Upon calling 1800SAMSUNG, he had to wait around 30 minutes due to the high volume of calls. Then the agent reportedly offered him $22 to keep the watch. Upon preferring a replacement, the whole process only got more complicated. You can see the steps he noted below.

    • Return the defective Watch Ultra for a refund. (Take note he got this at a discount since he preordered this together with the Galaxy Z Fold 6). A prepaid shipping label was emailed to him. The refund will take around two weeks to be credited back to his account.
    • Purchase a new Galaxy Watch Ultra using the link the agent sent him. At this point, he had already paid for another order of the Watch Ultra at full price. Not the preorder price since the promo is finished.
    • Wait for Samsung to issue his refund for the defective Watch Ultra.
    • Once refunded, he will need to contact the company again to get another refund (they will price match his original pre-order price).

  • Vivo to Debut First Mixed Reality Headset in 2025

Vivo to Debut First Mixed Reality Headset in 2025

Vivo recently hosted an event in China, focusing on the future of mobile imaging. Details of their vision can be found in a separate story.

In addition to imaging, Vivo confirmed its plans to enter the mixed reality (MR) market. The company announced that it will release an MR wearable headset in 2025.

    Confirmation of MR Plans

Earlier this year, Vivo’s executive vice president, Hu Baishan, hinted at the company's interest in MR technology during the Boao Forum for Asia. At that time, Baishan described MR as the next significant advancement in mobile technology. Now, Vivo has officially confirmed these plans.

Vivo is not entirely new to Extended Reality (XR). The company launched its first AR smart glasses in 2019, although these required pairing with a 5G smartphone to function.

    Standalone MR Device?

There is hope that the new MR device will provide a more immersive, standalone experience similar to Apple’s Vision Pro, but no specific details have been confirmed yet.

Vivo’s innovation comes during a period of strong market performance. According to Canalys, Vivo is the top smartphone brand in China, with a 19% market share. The high-end Vivo X series has also seen sustained growth, reinforcing the company’s position in the premium consumer device market.

    Competition and Market Position

Competitors such as Huawei and Oppo are rumored to be working on similar MR products, though no official announcements have been made.

The Imaging Festival was also an opportunity for Vivo to highlight its technological advancements. The company revealed that its next flagship smartphones, likely the Vivo X200 series, will incorporate an in-house Blueprint image sensor, Blueprint Algorithm Matrix, and Blueprint Imaging chip.

Vivo’s move into the mixed reality (MR) space marks a notable development in the wearable device market. The company’s success in the smartphone industry will likely influence its approach to this new technology.

  • Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Gets Major HyperOS Update

Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Gets Major HyperOS Update

Xiaomi has introduced a major update for its widely-used Smart Band 8, upgrading the firmware to HyperOS version 1.6.222 in China. This update brings numerous new features and enhancements, primarily aimed at boosting user productivity and personalization.

    Key Additions in the Update

The standout feature in this update is the inclusion of focus notifications. Previously available on the Smart Band 8 Pro, this feature allows users to prioritize notifications from specific apps, ensuring only the most crucial information is displayed on their wrist. This is particularly useful for those who receive a high volume of notifications, as it helps reduce distractions and improve task focus.

Moreover, the update introduces support for paid watch faces, further expanding personalization options. Users can now select from a broader range of designs and styles to suit their tastes. While this may be seen as a step towards monetization, it also provides a revenue stream for developers and designers, potentially leading to a more diverse and creative selection of watch faces in the future.

    Additional Improvements

Besides these significant features, the update also addresses several known issues, enhancing the device’s overall stability and performance. The rollout of this update is gradual, so users who haven’t received it yet should expect it in the coming days.

This isn’t the first substantial update for the Smart Band 8. In August of last year, a firmware update (version 1.3.176) introduced several key features, such as Smart Do Not Disturb mode, new watch faces, and support for bus cards in specific regions. It also improved the device’s fitness tracking with a new Frisbee motion algorithm and somatosensory game vibration feedback.

Launched in April of last year, the Xiaomi Smart Band 8 has already earned acclaim for its impressive features, including a vibrant 1.62-inch AMOLED display, sleek racetrack design, and extensive health and fitness tracking capabilities.

  • Samsung Galaxy Ring Compatible with All Android Phones: Report

Samsung Galaxy Ring Compatible with All Android Phones: Report

Samsung’s recently unveiled Galaxy Ring smart ring has been making waves in the tech world, and recent reports suggest it might be even more versatile than initially thought.

While Samsung initially claimed the ring would only be compatible with its own Galaxy smartphones, it seems that any Android phone running Android 11 or higher with at least 1.5GB of memory can now join in on the fun.

    Broader Compatibility

This exciting development was confirmed by YouTuber M. Brandon Lee, who successfully paired the Galaxy Ring with a Nothing phone. The process is relatively simple, requiring users to download the Galaxy Wearable app from the Google Play Store and follow the setup instructions.

The app will then prompt users to install Samsung Health and SmartThings, ensuring a seamless integration with the Galaxy Ring.

While this newfound compatibility is great news for Android users, it’s important to note that some features, such as Find My Ring, Energy Score, Wellness Tips, and Galaxy AI, remain exclusive to Samsung Galaxy devices.

    Core Functionality

Nonetheless, the core functionality of the Galaxy Ring, including its health-tracking capabilities and notifications, should work flawlessly on non-Samsung Android phones.

Samsung has since updated its official website to reflect this broader compatibility, indicating that the company is open to expanding the reach of its innovative wearable. However, iOS users will have to wait a bit longer, as the Galaxy Ring currently does not support iPhones.

    Market Competition

The smart ring market is experiencing a surge in competition with the entry of Samsung’s Galaxy Ring, challenging Oura’s dominance in the segment. Oura is responding with its upcoming Oura Ring 4, recently spotted in certification documents. The documents reveal a new design featuring a raised middle section and possible design variations. While details on additional sensors are scarce, the ring is expected to be available in sizes from 7 to 15, and its launch seems imminent with certifications in progress.
