Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024): More RAM and Upgraded Camera Features

Amazon has refreshed the Fire HD 8 tablet for 2024. The new 12th generation Fire HD 8 maintains the same design as its predecessor, but it offers notable performance enhancements and other updates.

    Display and Build

The Fire HD 8 (2024) features an 8-inch IPS HD display (1280 x 800) similar to the prior model. It still has thick bezels and is constructed from the same polycarbonate material. Available colors include Black, Emerald, and Hibiscus.

    Performance Improvements

Key upgrades lie within the device. The Fire HD 8 (2024) now offers 3GB of RAM for the 32GB model and 4GB of RAM for the 64GB model, a significant enhancement over the 2GB of RAM found in both storage options of the 2022 version. It continues to utilize a hexa-core processor running at 2.0GHz, but the increased RAM should lead to better overall performance.

Additionally, the rear camera has been improved from 2MP to 5MP, while the front camera remains at 2MP. The tablet supports dual-band Wi-Fi, but it does not have Wi-Fi 6 capability. It retains features such as an audio jack, Bluetooth 5.2, and offers up to 13 hours of battery life, consistent with the 2022 model. Although it supports fast charging up to 15W, it comes with a standard 5W adapter, so charging speed has not changed.

    AI Features

In line with modern trends, the Fire HD 8 (2024) incorporates AI features. It includes a writing assistant that integrates with the on-device keyboard, assisting users with emails, documents, and social media. Users can select preset writing styles, convert casual text into a more professional tone, and receive various writing suggestions.

The Silk Browser also benefits from AI enhancements, offering summaries of web articles. Additionally, there’s a new wallpaper creator that allows users to input prompts for high-resolution wallpaper generation. This feature will be available for all compatible Fire tablets later this month, not just the Fire HD 8 (2024).

    Pricing and Availability

The Fire HD 8 (2024) is currently available for purchase on Amazon, with a substantial discount running until October 9. The 32GB model is priced at $54.99, down from $99.99, while the 4GB + 64GB version costs $84.99 instead of $129.99. For those wanting to avoid lockscreen ads, the prices increase to $69.99 ($114.99) and $99.99 ($144.99), respectively.

As usual, Amazon offers kid-friendly variants of the tablet, namely the Fire HD 8 Kids and the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro. Both versions start at $69.99 (originally $139.99) and include durable cases available in various colors, as well as Disney and Marvel themed editions.

  • Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11: New Design, MediaTek Chip, Key Feature

Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11: New Design, MediaTek Chip, Key Feature

Since its initial reveal in 2020, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet has set the standard for Chromebook tablets. Now, four years later, the third iteration, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11, has been launched with a similar design but several significant enhancements.

    Design Updates

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 features a flat display encased in bezels, yet it includes design modifications that distinguish it from earlier models. Notably, Lenovo has replaced the raised circular rear camera with a new rectangular camera island. Additionally, the dual-color design of previous versions has been updated. This new model showcases a floating horizontal bar that is a lighter shade than the tablet itself, stretching from one side to the other without reaching the edges. The bar is inscribed with the word ‘Chromebook’ and a stylus icon, and the Lenovo logo has shifted from the top left to the center, appearing in a larger typeface.

    Specifications and Features

The Chromebook Duet 11 retains speaker grilles on the sides and USB-C ports, but it now includes a 3.5 mm audio jack on the left side, a feature absent in earlier generations. Lenovo will provide a keyboard cover and a versatile kickstand case that can be adjusted for both landscape and portrait modes.

In terms of specifications, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 boasts a 10.95-inch WUXGA touch display with a brightness of 400 nits and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It does not feature an OLED display like the Chromebook Duet 5 (currently $379 on Amazon), as Lenovo would have highlighted. The device is powered by the MediaTek Kompanio 838 chipset, which replaces the Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 used in the Chromebook Duet 3.

    Performance and Battery Life

Introduced at Computex 2024, the Kompanio 838 (MT8188) is a 6nm octa-core chipset that includes two Cortex-A78 CPU cores. This chipset also features a dedicated NPU (NPU 650) for AI capabilities, supports dual 4K displays, and has Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. It can be configured with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, although the Chromebook Duet 11 does not include a microSD card slot for additional storage options.

Camera specifications remain unchanged, with a 5MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear camera. Nevertheless, improved picture quality may result from the new ISP integrated into the Kompanio 838. While Lenovo hasn’t specified the battery capacity, they claim that users can expect up to 12 hours of battery life.

The Chromebook Duet 11 supports both touch and stylus input (USI 2.0), but customers will need to buy a USI 2.0 stylus separately if they do not already own one. Lenovo has also announced that the well-known note-taking application, Goodnotes, has been optimized for use on this device, as well as other Chromebooks that support stylus input.

    Pricing and Availability

When the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 is released, it will retail for €399 in Europe and $339.99 in the U.S. There is also an educational variant named the Lenovo Chromebook Duet EDU G2, which comes with a TPU case that has a spill-resistant keyboard and a slot for the Lenovo USI Pen 2, priced at $319. Unfortunately, Lenovo has not provided any information regarding a successor to the larger Chromebook Duet 5.

  • Baseus PicoGo 45W Fast Charger Launches to Compete with Anker Nano II

Baseus PicoGo 45W Fast Charger Launches to Compete with Anker Nano II

The Baseus PicoGo 45W charger has officially launched and is competing directly with the Anker Nano II. However, there are certain features that make the Anker option more appealing. One notable advantage is that the Nano II includes a foldable plug, which enhances its portability.

    Compact Design but Lacking Foldability

While the PicoGo 45W power adapter boasts a compact design, it does not feature a foldable plug. In addition, the Anker Nano II has a price edge; it typically retails for $23.99 (currently $19.99 on Amazon), while Baseus’s new product is priced at $25.99.

    Advanced Technology in Charging

Despite this, the PicoGo 45W presents some advantages of its own. It incorporates GaN 6 technology, whereas the Nano II uses GaN 2. Baseus claims that this latest technology improves efficiency, achieving an energy conversion rate of 93%.

    Versatile Charging Standards

Another key feature of the Baseus PicoGo 45W charger is its compatibility with multiple charging standards, including PD 3.0, QC 3.0, PPS, FCP, AFC, and SCP. Although Anker provides limited details on the protocols supported by the Nano II, it does confirm compatibility with PPS.

    Safety Features and Cooling System

Baseus also emphasizes the safety features of the PicoGo 45W fast charger. The company states that the adapter monitors the charging status 720,000 times every hour, ensuring safe and stable charging experiences. Additionally, it includes a dual heat dissipation cooling system to manage temperature effectively.

  • Huawei Outshines Apple Again in Tablet Competition

Huawei Outshines Apple Again in Tablet Competition

Huawei’s position in the Chinese tablet market has become significantly stronger. For the second consecutive quarter, the tech powerhouse has outperformed Apple in tablet sales, as reported by Canalys.

    Huawei’s Impressive Shipments

The report indicates that Huawei shipped an impressive 20.5 million tablets in Q2 2024 in China, giving them a substantial 26% share of the market. This achievement not only secures their leading position but also marks a remarkable 66% increase compared to the previous year. The success can be largely attributed to Huawei’s proactive launch strategy. Their varied MatePad series, which includes the newly launched dual-layer OLED MatePad Pro 12.2, appears to be appealing to Chinese consumers.

    Apple’s Decline in Market Share

On the other hand, Apple, despite having a similar market share with approximately 20.1 million tablets shipped, finds itself in a challenging situation. The company has experienced a 14% drop in year-on-year growth, suggesting difficulties in adapting to the rapidly changing Chinese tablet market.

    Rising Competition from Local Brands

The competition intensifies with the presence of local brands such as Xiaomi and Honor. Xiaomi secured the third position with 9.25 million tablets shipped, while Honor experienced a remarkable 63% year-on-year growth, landing in fourth place with 6.5 million units. This pattern clearly indicates the increasing competitiveness in the Chinese tablet market, where local manufacturers are presenting enticing alternatives to established names like Apple.

This surge in competition has positively impacted overall tablet sales in China. Canalys reports a 20% increase in tablet shipments compared to the previous quarter, likely fueled by aggressive online marketing efforts. The research firm also forecasts a 9% rise in shipments for the entire year.

    Future Trends in the Market

Looking forward, the focus appears to be shifting towards artificial intelligence features. Canalys anticipates that technology companies will utilize AI capabilities to set their products apart and attract consumers in a market that is becoming increasingly crowded with high-performing devices.

  • Lenovo Launches New Color Option for 2024 Legion Y700 Tablet

Lenovo Launches New Color Option for 2024 Legion Y700 Tablet

Lenovo is set to unveil the 2024 Legion Y700 on September 29 in China. This upcoming Android gaming tablet will compete with the RedMagic Nova, and Lenovo has confirmed nearly all the device’s specifications. Just hours ahead of the official launch, the company has announced a second color option.

    New Color Variants

Initially, Lenovo showcased the tablet in a matte black finish. The 2023 Legion Y700 was offered in a single color, but the new model will provide more choices. According to the latest teasers, the successor will also come in a white option.

The first color is referred to as "Carbon Crystal Black," while the second is called "Ice White." These teasers have revealed little else. Earlier, Lenovo disclosed that the gaming tablet will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Although it may not be the top variant found in RedMagic’s latest tablet, Lenovo has equipped it with a substantial vapor chamber (VC) cooler.

    Performance Insights

A recent post on Weibo has assured users that the 2024 Legion Y700 will maintain stable performance across various gaming scenarios. The device’s temperature management appears to be impressive even under demanding conditions.

Additionally, the new tablet will feature an 8.8-inch display boasting a refresh rate of 165 Hz and a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels, along with global DC dimming capabilities. These specifications position the 2024 Legion Y700 as a worthy successor to its 2023 predecessor. If Lenovo keeps the pricing competitive, especially in the international market, it could pose a strong challenge to the RedMagic Nova.
