  • Galaxy Z Fold 6: Slightly Wider Cover Screen, Minimal Change

Galaxy Z Fold 6: Slightly Wider Cover Screen, Minimal Change

We are inching closer to the launch of the sixth-generation Galaxy foldables. Some earlier rumors suggested that the phone would feature a wider cover display, which has been a popular demand since the inception of foldable phones.

Book-style foldables, such as the Z Fold series, are designed to function like standard smartphones when closed, with a larger display inside. However, Samsung’s taller aspect ratio for the inner display results in a significantly narrower outer display, making the phone less convenient to use in its closed state compared to a traditional bar phone.

    Enhanced User Experience

Devices with wider aspect ratios, like the Pixel Fold and OnePlus Open, highlight this disparity. Therefore, a wider outer display on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 is expected to offer a considerably improved user experience compared to previous Galaxy foldables, reinforcing its market position.

    Protective Case Revealed

Recently, an image of a protective case for the Galaxy Z Fold 6, shared by US-based case manufacturer Thinborne on X (formerly Twitter), shows a very similar aspect ratio to the Z Flip 5. You can view the image below:

An earlier leaked image had indicated that the cover display would only be a few millimeters wider and feature sharper corners. Notably, the display borders are expected to be almost symmetrical this time around.

    Inner Display Specifications

Regarding the inner display, it will be a 7.6″ foldable AMOLED panel. While the display size remains unchanged, the aspect ratio will be slightly wider, making the phone shorter and wider. Additionally, the new model is rumored to be 15 grams lighter than its predecessor.

  • OneUI 6.1.1: Next Big Upgrade with New AI Features, Says Tipster

OneUI 6.1.1: Next Big Upgrade with New AI Features, Says Tipster

Samsung may deviate from its usual release pattern this year by launching the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 with OneUI 6.1.1 and postponing the release of the Android 15-based OneUI 7. The OneUI 6.1.1 update is expected to be a significant upgrade, featuring additional AI capabilities and camera enhancements. This information comes from the renowned tipster Ice Universe, who suggests that the build will be available for the Galaxy S24 series in August, though he did not specify an exact date.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 to Feature New AI Capabilities with OneUI 6.1.1

The tipster also reveals that Samsung will introduce a new graffiti generation AI-powered tool in the forthcoming One UI 6.1.1 update. According to him, this feature will make "very good use of S Pen and imagination," potentially allowing users to convert their S Pen writings into graffiti using AI.

It’s worth noting that the AI features currently available in OneUI 6.1 do not utilize the S Pen. Samsung appears to be aiming to maximize the hardware capabilities it already offers with Galaxy AI. The new release may also bring improvements to system animations.

    Testing and Release Schedule

Samsung generally starts testing new Android versions around July or August, releasing a stable build with the latest Android version around October, shortly after its public release. However, according to the tipster, the release of the Android 15-based OneUI 7 might be delayed this year. He mentions, "One UI 7 will not arrive very early, because there are special circumstances this year."

Since its launch, the Galaxy S24 series has not received a significant firmware update. Ice Universe indicates that the OneUI 6.1.1 build, which will be available for the series in August, could also bring camera optimizations and resolve various image processing issues.

  • OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite Processor Choice May Disappoint: Report

OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite Processor Choice May Disappoint: Report

Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has confirmed that on June 24, it will be launching the OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite 5G smartphone in India. This highly anticipated successor of the Nord CE 3 Lite 5G has created a lot of excitement as the brand has confirmed that it will feature a 50MP Sony LYT-600 main camera, which will be a major improvement over its current camera hardware.

That said, not everything is fine and dandy as tipster Paras Guglani has revealed some disappointing news. As per a spec sheet shared by the Paras on X (formerly Twitter), the Nord CE 4 Lite 5G will be launching with the Snapdragon 695 processor. For those unaware, the Snapdragon 695 is a 6-nanometer-based processor launched back in October 2021. This processor has been a workhorse for the past few years, appearing on many budget-midrange 5G smartphones, including the Nord CE 3 Lite 5G.

    Hardware and Display Upgrades

Although disappointing, the news isn’t a shocker as we know that the Nord CE 4 Lite 5G will be a rebrand of the Oppo K12x, which also uses this processor. The brand’s decision to opt for this old processor rather than going for something like a Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 might be a cost-cutting measure to still be around the affordable sub-₹20,000 range, even with upgrades like the new Sony LYT-600 primary camera, and a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 2100 nits. Not to mention that the brand plans to replace the side-mounted fingerprint sensor with an in-display sensor.

    Battery and Charging Enhancements

OnePlus has also confirmed a battery increase from 5,000 mAh to 5,500 mAh. We can expect the fast charging to also be upgraded to 80W from 67W since the Oppo K12x has 80W fast charging. All of these specs combined make the upcoming Nord CE 4 Lite 5G an impressive device, even with the old processor. That said, it remains to be seen how Sony’s new LYT-600 sensor behaves when combined with the aging Snapdragon 695.

Smart Scanning is currently available on select Huawei models, including the Mate 50 series, Mate X3 series, Mate 60 series, and P70 series.

    System Optimizations and Security Enhancements

Beyond camera improvements, the HarmonyOS update also addresses other areas of the phone, including the overall user experience. It integrates the latest June security patches to enhance system security, ensuring users have the most secure experience possible.

  • Samsung’s 3nm Process Faces Power Efficiency and Yield Challenges

Samsung’s 3nm Process Faces Power Efficiency and Yield Challenges

According to some previous rumors, Samsung has achieved success with its 3nm process nodes and the development of its 2nm process nodes is also progressing smoothly.

However, a recent report from Businesskorea indicates that Samsung Foundry’s 3nm process remains significantly inferior to TSMC’s, both in yield rate and power efficiency. For those unfamiliar, higher yield rates mean more functional chips per wafer, lowering the cost per chip and increasing profitability.

    Industry Preferences

As a result, it is expected that most fabless manufacturers including NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple will continue to rely on TSMC for their 3nm chips. It has also been reported that Google will switch to TSMC for its 2025 flagship chipset Tensor G5. Notably, the Tensor G4, which will power the upcoming Pixel 9 series, will still be manufactured by Samsung Foundry and will be based on an updated 4nm process.

    Production Challenges

Samsung talked about the mass production of their 3nm chips 3 years ago. Back in June 2022, Samsung Foundry was the first in the industry to apply the 3nm gate-all-around (GAA) process to mass production. However, due to the limitations, the company is still struggling to secure customers for the end product. The first generation 3nm process node (SF3E) has performed below the company’s expectations when it comes to performance and power efficiency. It has reportedly been adopted by some niche scenarios like chips for cryptocurrency mining. However, a widespread adoption will still require more improvements in power efficiency and yield rates.

    Yield Rate Issues

The relatively lower yield rates and power efficiency of Samsung Foundry’s process nodes have long been problematic and are considered the main reasons for the performance gap between Snapdragon (those that are fabricated by TSMC) and Exynos-powered Galaxy devices.

According to a previous report, Qualcomm is considering a dual-sourcing strategy by partnering with Samsung Foundry alongside TSMC. While this is aimed at securing the company’s business by not relying on a single manufacturer, the company’s CEO mentioned “the current focus must be on the foundry production at TSMC.”
