Zongshen has introduced a new 1.5-liter extended-range electric motorcycle. The Zongshen ES5 extended-range variant is a hybrid that delivers impressive performance. Its battery can support the bike for distances up to 300km.

Specifications and Performance

The new energy motorcycle from Zongshen is marketed under the Senlan Electric brand and features 60V 31Ah lithium batteries. The ES5 has a pure electric range of 70km, and its comprehensive range extends to about 300km. When the battery power is utilized, the minimum fuel consumption is 1.5L per 100km. The pure electric version of the ES5 is available with either two or three 60V 31Ah lithium battery packs, reaching a range of 180km with the three-battery setup.

Advanced Technology

Senlan Electric has introduced several innovations in recent years, including the launch of the Senlan extended-range technology platform C-REEV last month. This extended range design ensures worry-free endurance for vehicles like the ES5 by continuously charging the battery while driving or parked. This minimizes the waiting time for charging and extends the range. The ES5 offers both pure electric power for short distances and power generation for longer journeys.

Charging Options

The ES5 provides multiple charging modes to accommodate various usage scenarios. Charging via an ordinary household 220V outlet takes 2-3 hours to fully recharge a single battery, while a Car AC charging station with a 2200W fast charge can achieve full recharge in 40 minutes. The extended-range platform generates power with a minimum state-of-charge fuel consumption of 1.5L/100km, and the C-REEV power recovery mode offers continuous small amounts of power feedback.

Cost and Functionality

Equipped with the C-REEV, the ES5 requires a more conservative battery architecture, which translates to lower costs. Additionally, it offers a maximum external discharge of 1000W, effectively turning it into a large mobile power supply. DJI is expanding its technological portfolio by venturing into the e-bike market with the launch of its new Avinox drive system. This innovative technology is first seen in the Amflow, DJI’s inaugural e-bike, which boasts a carbon fiber construction. This move comes as the US intensifies its scrutiny on Chinese-manufactured drones.

DJI Amflow Mountain e-bike: Unique Features

The Avinox drive system, developed by the renowned Chinese drone manufacturer, weighs in at a mere 2.52 kilograms (excluding the batteries) and delivers an impressive 850W of peak power (250W nominal). This system is integrated into the bike’s lightweight 19.2-kilogram frame, enabling the Amflow to surpass other full-power e-bikes in both power output and range. Additionally, the Avinox system is rated IP66, ensuring resistance to water and dust.

The Avinox battery supports GaN 3x fast charging, capable of reaching from 0 to 75 percent in just 1.5 hours. The drive system includes a planetary gearset and polymer gears, optimizing the balance between size, weight, and power output. DJI guarantees a quiet ride along with four standard riding assist modes: Auto, Eco Trail, Turbo, and Boost. The Auto mode adjusts power automatically through "multi-sensor fusion." Furthermore, Avinox is equipped with a 2-inch OLED touchscreen panel for changing assist modes and displaying essential information.

Avinox Drive System

The DJI Amflow can also connect to your smartphone, unlocking additional features such as data recording, sharing, security, real-time bike status, and location tracking. The Avinox Drive system will be available exclusively to manufacturers, while the Amflow’s pricing remains undisclosed. A massive fire that ravaged part of a building that housed the Couer D’Alene Police Department’s IT department, the Animal Control unit, and several vehicles, has been attributed to an electric bike battery. The blaze occurred earlier this month and underscores the ongoing risks associated with EV batteries, despite advancements over the years.

Incident Details

There are numerous accounts of e-bike battery fires, and a common theme is that the damage is often more severe when these batteries are left unattended. The fire at the Couer D’Alene Police Department in Idaho caused significant damage to the building and the vehicles parked in the garage. Notably, the Couer D’Alene Fire Department, which was located next door, struggled to control the blaze before eventually extinguishing it. It took the efforts of 30 firefighters to bring the fire under control.

No Casualties

Fortunately, according to news reports, there were no casualties or injuries during the incident. However, the Police Department lost several vehicles, including a SWAT car, an incident command trailer, and all its motorcycles and e-bikes. Initially, the cause of the fire was unknown as an investigation was launched. Preliminary investigations by the Idaho State Fire Marshals revealed that a recently purchased e-bike battery experienced a ‘catastrophic failure’ while being properly recharged. The fire has been classified as an accident, and a comprehensive forensic analysis is being considered.

The incident in Couer D’Alene, Idaho, highlights the risks involved in charging electric bikes, scooters, and other electric mobility vehicles. It emphasizes the importance of exercising caution and closely monitoring these vehicles during the recharging process.

Nepali electric vehicle (EV) startup Yatri Motorcycles announced on Wednesday (June 19) that their upcoming Project 1 Gen 2 (P1 Gen 2) will be the world’s first two-wheeler to integrate wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Yatri’s technical director, Thakur Poudel, stated that this feature has previously been exclusive to four-wheeled vehicles. The P1 Gen 2 aims to change that by offering seamless smartphone integration for both Android and iOS users.

Wireless Connectivity

This will enable riders to connect their P1 Gen 2 to their smartphones effortlessly. The most noteworthy aspect is its wireless capability, eliminating the need for cables or extra accessories to utilize this feature.

Riders can access phone functions directly through the bike’s built-in display and use voice commands for safe navigation, calls, messages, and music control while riding.

First Major Feature

The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is the first major revealed feature of the P1 Gen 2. Yatri has been teasing the second generation of their Project 1 since late 2023.

Beyond connectivity, the P1 Gen 2 will add a crash cage and frame slider for enhanced protection. This addition is expected to be available for existing P1 owners as well since the bike’s overall design remains unchanged.

Core Improvements

Yatri emphasizes that the most significant improvements lie within the P1 Gen 2’s core functionalities. They have reportedly analyzed over 1 million kilometers of P1 user data alongside general user feedback to refine performance, comfort, and stability for the next iteration.

While the launch date is still under wraps, reports suggest a 2024 release for the P1 Gen 2. Pricing details are also yet to be revealed. For context, the original P1 currently retails at a starting price of Rs 565,000 (approximately $4,240) in Nepal.

VMAX, a Swiss electric scooter company, has introduced two new models aimed at the US market: the VMAX VX2 Extreme and the VX5 Pro e-scooters. Since its debut in 2015, VMAX has made a name for itself in Europe and expanded into the US last year, marking its progress with these new releases. Although not produced in Switzerland, the scooters uphold the Swiss standards for quality and reliability.

The models offer an impressive two-year warranty, a rarity in the industry. Key features of the VMAX VX2 Extreme and VX5 Pro include a focus on UL certification testing, IPX6 waterproof certification, and a well-stocked parts warehouse in the US.

These new VMAX e-scooters cater to both high-performance and entry-level markets. Enhanced Specifications

The VMAX VX2 Extreme is an upgrade from the VX2 Pro, which remains a popular choice. It comes with a more powerful motor delivering 1,600W peak power, a 33% maximum climbing grade, and a range of up to 43 miles (69 km). The VX2 Extreme also features a wider deck, an upgraded 4-inch TFT LCD, and a new mobile app. It supports a higher weight limit of 150 kg and can reach speeds of up to 25 mph (40 km/h).

The base model of the VX2 Extreme houses a 500Wh battery, providing a 28-mile (45 km) range. Customers can opt for larger batteries—624 Wh or 792 Wh—offering ranges of 34 miles (54 km) and 43 miles (69 km), respectively.

The VMAX VX5 Pro has several enhancements over the VMAX VX5 budget model, including an 18 mph (30 km/h) top speed and new LED turn signal blinkers. It also features larger 9-inch pneumatic tubeless tires.

Pricing & Availability

The VX5 Pro base model is priced at $449, featuring a battery range of 11 miles (18 km). Two higher-range options offer 17 miles (27 km) or 22 miles (35 km) with larger batteries. The VX2 Extreme starts at $999, with an additional $100 or $200 for the larger battery options, balancing high performance with affordability.

British automaker McLaren, renowned for its supercars that have captivated the motorsports world, has now ventured into the EV market with the launch of two formidable electric mountain bikes. The McLaren Extreme and Sport models are touted as the most powerful street-legal e-bikes currently available.

In-House Manufacturing

Unlike the common practice of automakers partnering with bike manufacturers for branded two-wheelers, McLaren produced these e-bikes entirely in-house. The same team behind the design of the hybrid Artura crafted these bikes. The new e-bikes embody McLaren’s philosophy of speed and durability, featuring a carbon fiber frame with orange accents.

Specifications and Performance

The McLaren Extreme and Sport mountain e-bikes, while not as robust as some other electric mountain bikes, are powered by a custom-tuned mid-drive motor. This motor boasts a normal power output of 600W and a peak power of 825W, delivering up to 119Nm of torque, making it the most powerful motor on the market. The e-bikes offer five different ride modes.

The top models have a maximum speed of approximately 34 km/h (20 mph), a respectable performance for electric mountain bikes. Though the Extreme and Sport models share many similarities, they also have distinct differences. The Extreme model features a full suspension system, making it ideal for off-road adventures, whereas the Sport version is more versatile with a streamlined design. Both models are suitable for urban roads and trails and come with handlebar-mounted displays featuring graphics reminiscent of supercars.

Pricing & Availability

Both models come equipped with Pirelli all-terrain tires and are now available for purchase. The McLaren Extreme and Sport eMTBs are priced starting at $10,950 and $7,950, respectively. McLaren has indicated that these models are available in limited quantities, though exact production numbers have not been disclosed.
