In a recent chat with Press Start Australia, Masato Kumazawa, the producer of Resident Evil Requiem, shared some insights about Capcom’s journey during the game’s development. Initially, the team was focused on creating a “fun to play” multiplayer prototype that had been in the works for six years, even before Resident Evil 8: Village came out.
Back to the Basics
However, Capcom realized that this direction didn’t align with what the series is known for. They decided to rethink their approach, transforming the concept into what we now know as Resident Evil Requiem. Kumazawa mentioned in the interview:
“When we looked at the multiplayer version, the horror aspect was quite intense. But we created a game that was enjoyable. After a deep analysis, we questioned if true fans of the series would appreciate it.”
This led to the conclusion that fans might not find it as enjoyable. Therefore, they reverted to a single-player format. While some elements from the previous version remain, Kumazawa noted that they couldn’t share specifics about these features.
Elements of Surprise
When asked about these “remaining elements,” Kumazawa chuckled and sidestepped the question. The choice to return to the series’ roots was influenced by fan feedback. He stated:
“I think fans of the series are looking for survival horror and genuine scares. That’s their top priority. We can’t just add new skins and characters and expect it to be the same experience.”
This wouldn’t work, he added. Their aim was to introduce fresh elements that would make it feel like a new survival horror experience.
Resident Evil Requiem is set to continue the legacy of 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which rejuvenated the franchise after several lackluster main entries, such as 2009’s Resident Evil 5 and 2012’s Resident Evil 6.
