Xiaomi’s newly unveiled Redmi Note 17 series has already sparked speculation about an international rebrand, just days after its China-only debut. The standard Redmi Note 17 starts at CNY 1,299 ($191), while the Redmi Note 17 Pro carries a starting price of CNY 1,599 ($236). While global availability for the Redmi-branded devices has not been confirmed, traces of a corresponding Poco model have surfaced in Xiaomi’s software ecosystem.
Emerging code points to a revived Poco model
Evidence spotted in HyperOS code suggests Xiaomi is preparing to release the Poco X8, a handset that was previously believed to have been cancelled. According to observer Kacper Skrzypek, the Poco X8 will carry over the same rear camera configuration found on the Redmi Note 17 Pro: a 50 MP primary sensor accompanied by a 2 MP auxiliary lens.
Battery capacity and hardware shifts
The global version of the Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G is expected to house an 8,340 mAh battery. Xiaomi has a track record of transferring such large-capacity batteries to its Poco-branded variants, as seen with the Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G and the Poco X7. If that pattern holds, the Poco X8 would offer a battery roughly 63% larger than the cell inside its direct predecessor.
On the processing side, the Poco X8 appears set to move from the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Ultra to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 4. Early benchmark data indicates that this platform switch may deliver only marginal performance improvements.
Market context and outlook
Launch dates for the Poco X8 remain unknown. For reference, the Poco X7 arrived in early 2025, priced at £249 in the UK and €299 (~$342) in the Eurozone. Should the new model follow a similar timeline and retain Xiaomi’s recent emphasis on oversized batteries, it could introduce a notable shift in endurance within its segment.
