A California-based accessory maker has introduced a new smartphone case that blends personalization with impact protection, using an integrated E-Ink screen to display custom imagery without drawing on the phone’s own battery.

A four-color display powered without a battery

The Xtrem Instant Custom Case centers on a round 4-inch E-Ink panel with a pixel density of 212 PPI, capable of rendering four colors. Because E-Ink technology consumes power only when the displayed image changes and requires no energy to hold a static picture, the case eliminates the need for an internal battery entirely. Instead, it draws power wirelessly via NFC whenever content is updated. Users can select and customize images through a companion app, and two cases can even exchange displayed content simply by being placed back-to-back.

Full NFC and MagSafe compatibility retained

Xtrem notes that the case is engineered so that the smartphone’s own NFC functions, including contactless payments, continue to work without interference. MagSafe compatibility is also preserved, ensuring that magnetic chargers and accessories attach as expected. In addition to its display capabilities, the case is built to deliver substantial physical protection: it is rated to survive drops from heights of up to 20 feet, and it incorporates a dedicated button for camera control.

Pricing and device availability

The Xtrem Instant Custom Case is priced at $74 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Variations are also available for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, as well as the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and the iPhone 15 series. The accessory arrives at a time when customizable E-Ink cases remain a niche category, offering a way to rotate personal photos or designs on the back of a phone without compromising everyday wireless features or charging ease.
