Manufactured by N Plus and marketed as the world’s first “smart” e-bike, the Volkswagen Sport eBike enters a growing field where connected features are becoming more common. While the claim of being a true first is open to debate, the model nonetheless packages an unusually broad suite of integrated electronics aimed at urban safety.
A Suite of Integrated Safety Systems
The onboard intelligence includes a radar-based blind-spot monitoring system and a rearview camera. The camera feed is displayed on a dedicated screen and activates automatically when the rear-facing radar detects approaching traffic. Braking and turn signals are communicated to surrounding road users through lights embedded in a companion Smart Helmet. For navigation guidance and blind-spot alerts, riders can use specialized smart glasses that project information directly into their field of view, though this display relies on a paired smartphone rather than the bicycle’s own system.
Powertrain and Hardware Specifications
Propulsion comes from a Yamaha PW-X3 mid-drive motor delivering up to 85 Nm of torque. Energy is stored in a removable 490 Wh battery, with an optional 814 Wh rack-mounted range extender that will be available for riders seeking longer distances, although the larger unit may shift the bike’s weight distribution. The drivetrain uses a 9-speed Shimano Cues derailleur, and the aluminum frame incorporates illuminated Volkswagen logos at the front and rear. Additional equipment includes a 100-lux headlight and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes. The complete bicycle weighs approximately 27.5 kg.
Pricing and Availability
The Volkswagen Sport eBike is now available for order at $3,999, with the first deliveries expected in the fourth quarter. Buyers who place a pre-order will receive the rearview camera at no additional charge. The Smart Glasses and the Smart Helmet are each priced at $499, and the rack-mounted range extender battery retails for $848.
