Valve has released its first official Windows driver package for the Steam Machine, the living-room gaming cube it announced earlier this year. The bundle provides the foundational software needed to run Windows 10 or Windows 11 in place of the default SteamOS.
Essential Driver Foundation
The newly published drivers cover core hardware components: graphics, wireless connectivity, and storage. With these in place, owners can install a clean copy of Windows and treat the device as a standard compact PC connected to a television.
Hardware Philosophy Rooted in Openness
The move aligns with Valve’s long-standing position that its hardware is a PC first and a gaming console second. The company has repeatedly emphasized that buyers are free to erase SteamOS and load any operating system, storefront, or game launcher they choose. That same openness partly explains the premium pricing of the Steam Machine: unlike subsidized consoles, Valve does not rely on locking customers into a single ecosystem to recover hardware costs.
Dual-Boot Support Still Absent
At present, switching to Windows means wiping SteamOS completely. There is no officially supported method for keeping both operating systems on the same drive. Valve states that a proper dual-boot installer is in development but is not yet ready, and the company advises anyone hoping to alternate between SteamOS and Windows to wait rather than experiment with the new driver package prematurely.
Valve is also clear that this is a barebone, as-is release. The company will not provide official support for Windows-related issues on Steam hardware.
Limitations and Next Steps
For now, the driver set covers just the bare minimum—graphics, networking, and storage—needed to get Windows running on the machine. Broader functionality, including a reliable dual-boot experience, is expected to arrive once Valve’s own installer reaches maturity. The current release serves as a sensible first step for users willing to commit fully to Windows, while leaving the door open for a more flexible setup in the future.
