Sony FX5 Full-Frame 5K Cinema Camera with 15+ Stops

Sony has introduced the ILME-FX5, a significant new entry in its Cinema Line aimed at professional filmmakers and content creators. The camera is built around an 18.2-megapixel full-frame Exmor RS sensor and marks a substantial upgrade from the 4K-focused FX3 released in 2021, now offering open-gate 5K recording at up to 60 frames per second.

Imaging Performance and Processing

The full-frame 35mm sensor delivers more than 15 stops of latitude in S-Log3 mode, providing the dynamic range expected in high-end cinema production. Users can select from base ISOs of 800, 4,000, and 12,800, with the BIONZ XR2 image processing engine incorporating AI-powered noise reduction. Dual-gain shooting is available across an expansive ISO range from 320 to 409,600, preserving detail and latitude in challenging lighting conditions.

Stabilization and Autofocus System

The FX5 supports Sony’s E-mount lens ecosystem, including compatibility with anamorphic glass in open-gate mode. Footage is stabilized through a combination of optical 5-axis in-body image stabilization and a selectable Dynamic Active Mode for digital correction. A hybrid autofocus system uses 759 phase- and contrast-detection points, enhanced by AI-driven recognition for human subjects, animals, and birds to reliably track fast-moving elements in the frame.

Recording, Storage and Monitoring

Videos can be captured in 16-bit Sony X-OCN compressed RAW and recorded internally to either SDXC cards or higher-performance CFexpress Type A media, with dual slots available for flexible workflows. For shot composition and review, operators can use the built-in 3.5-inch multi-angle LCD with 2.76 million dots or an optional 0.58-inch OLED viewfinder offering 7.07 million dots and a 90-degree tilt mechanism.

Audio and Hardware Configurations

The camera body weighs roughly 1,046 grams. Two configurations are available: the ILME-FX5 ships with an XLR handle, while the ILME-FX5B omits it. When equipped, the handle includes a Sony Multi-Interface shoe and two XLR/TRS audio jacks for external microphones and accessories. The system supports recording up to four channels of 96 kHz, 32-bit float audio in tandem with video, a format that provides significant headroom to prevent clipping and distortion.

Connectivity and Workflow Integration

Designed for professional environments, the FX5 includes time code sync and comprehensive networked operation capabilities via wired and wireless connections. Physical ports consist of a LAN terminal, two USB ports, and a full-size HDMI output, supplemented by 802.11ax Wi-Fi. Networked RTSP livestreaming in 4K resolution is also supported directly from the camera.

Pricing and Availability

Sony expects the FX5 to begin shipping in mid-August. The ILME-FX5, which includes the XLR handle, will carry a suggested price of $5,499.99, while the ILME-FX5B body without the handle is priced at $4,899.99. In the Japanese market, the corresponding prices are set at 819,000 yen and 739,000 yen, respectively.
