Stellar Build, Limited Graphics: Asus Sheds Light on Zenbook S14’s Panther Lake Direction

The 2026 Asus Zenbook S14 arrives as a direct successor to the well-received 2024 model, transitioning from Intel’s efficiency-focused Lunar Lake platform to the new Panther Lake architecture. The original device impressed with a slim profile and a maximum processor TDP capped at 37 Watts, delivering excellent single-core speeds that outpaced competing Zen 5 designs. Its integrated Arc Graphics 140V also stood out as a remarkably capable GPU for a thin-and-light system, although the low power ceiling meant multi-threaded raw performance lagged behind rivals.

A Mixed Architectural Leap

Intel’s Panther Lake platform is designed to succeed both the Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake generations, bringing substantial gains in multi-core throughput. However, this uplift requires a higher power envelope, resulting in more active cooling. The headline feature for many users was supposed to be the new top-tier integrated graphics—the Arc B390 with 12 Xe cores and the Arc B370 with 10 Xe cores—which promise a significant generational jump in visual performance. The complication is that these powerful iGPUs are restricted to a limited selection of processors, such as the Core Ultra X models. Market availability and pricing constraints appear to have severely limited the number of notebooks shipping with these high-end chips, leaving many premium designs without them.

Unwelcome Downgrade in Graphics Power

This limitation is acutely felt in the new Asus Zenbook S14. Instead of a Core Ultra X variant, the system is configured with an Intel Core Ultra 9 386H, whose integrated graphics solution is limited to just four Xe cores. While users will benefit from stronger multi-core processing and improved battery life compared to the 2024 version, they must also contend with louder fan noise under load. More critically, the actual graphics and gaming performance takes a clear step backward, falling behind the two-year-old Lunar Lake model. For a premium ultraportable in this price bracket, the absence of a high-performance iGPU represents a notable disappointment for buyers expecting a generational upgrade across all fronts.
