It has been three years since Samsung introduced the SmartTag 2, a Bluetooth tracker that earned a reputation for reliability and deep integration with the SmartThings Find ecosystem. Galaxy device owners have benefited from the ability to locate tagged objects quickly, aided by a replaceable CR2032 battery rated to last between 500 and 700 days. A built-in keyring hole further simplifies attaching the tracker to everyday items.

Persistent Platform Limitations

The SmartTag 2 carries notable restrictions that have limited its appeal. Most significantly, it functions exclusively with Samsung Galaxy hardware, leaving iPhone users and owners of other Android brands without support. The crowdsourced finding network behind it is also constrained: because it depends entirely on nearby Samsung devices, location updates can become less frequent or slower in areas where Galaxy phone density is low. Additionally, the tracker relies on the Bluetooth 5.3 protocol, which by current standards is beginning to show its age.

Signs of a Forthcoming Refresh

A potential successor now appears to be on the horizon. Leaker Roland Quandt has signaled that a new model, possibly named the SmartTag 3, is approaching launch. Details remain scarce and unverified, although the news has fueled speculation that Samsung may address the current tracker’s most criticized shortcomings. A hardware generation update could also entail a move beyond Bluetooth 5.3, along with broader compatibility improvements that observers have long requested.

Launch Timing and Device Context

Samsung has not shared an official release date, and public discussion currently reflects two possibilities. One scenario points to July 22 as part of a Galaxy Unpacked event in London, where the company is expected to stage a larger product showcase. A more conventional window places the introduction between September and October, aligning with the typical release cadence for Samsung’s Fan Edition smartphones, such as the Galaxy S25 FE. Until Samsung provides clarity, the launch timetable remains open to interpretation.
