Microsoft’s next-generation console plans appear to be shifting, and new insider commentary suggests the company may not be ready to abandon physical media entirely. While Sony has signaled a decisive move away from disc drives, the Xbox team appears to be keeping its options open.
A Cautious Approach as Industry Shifts Digital
In a recent episode of the Xbox Two Podcast, well-known insider Jez Corden discussed the status of Microsoft’s future hardware effort, often referred to as Project Helix. Corden initially stated that his information pointed to the next Xbox console shipping without a built-in disc drive. He then pointed to a report by Tom Warren of The Verge indicating that Microsoft is still weighing its options, and after checking with his own sources, Corden suggested that assessment may be correct.
Corden noted that, based on what he has since learned, Microsoft is actively trying to determine how and whether it can accommodate physical discs before fully committing to a digital-only path. This signals that, despite strong market trends toward digital distribution, the company has not yet locked down the final hardware configuration.
Community Sentiment and Mounting Costs
Both Corden and his co-host expressed the view that continuing to support physical discs could help Xbox reconnect with a vocal portion of its community and differentiate the platform in a meaningful way. At the same time, Corden tempered expectations, saying there remains a very slim chance that Project Helix will include a native disc drive. The growing dominance of digital sales, combined with the extra manufacturing and licensing costs of being the sole major console maker to support physical media, makes it a difficult business case to justify.
Sony’s Stance Casts a Shadow
Microsoft’s deliberations come as Sony has all but confirmed that the PlayStation 6 will not feature an integrated disc drive. That decision has sparked significant backlash among dedicated fans, many of whom have publicly criticized the company’s direction. While Microsoft is not insulated from the same market pressures that pushed Sony toward a disc-less future, the current uncertainty around Project Helix suggests that Xbox leadership recognizes the lingering demand for physical media—at least for one more hardware cycle. As the restructuring led by CEO Asha Sharma unfolds, the final decision on disc support could emerge as a defining element of Xbox’s wounded but evolving business strategy.
