Nio has officially commenced deliveries of the new five-seat version of its ES8 sport utility vehicle in China, moving to strengthen its position in the premium large SUV category by offering a more spacious alternative to the existing three-row model. The first vehicles were handed over to buyers by founder, chairman, and CEO William Li together with co-founder and president Qin Lihong.
A direct response to customer demand
The five-seat ES8 enters the range as a direct answer to consumers who prioritize maximum cargo volume and passenger space over a third seating row. Li described the launch in a public statement as the entry of “the premium large five-seat SUV” into the all-electric era, highlighting the motto: “Five people. Twenty-one suitcases. Zero compromises.” The company emphasized a design that keeps passenger and cargo areas clearly separated, asserting that every occupant benefits from dedicated comfort and generous room.
Practicality and positioning
Practical storage is central to the new variant’s appeal. It provides a 230-liter front trunk and a 1,334-liter rear cargo area, delivering a total capacity of up to 3,084 liters when the rear seats are folded. Nio is positioning the five-seat ES8 not solely as a family vehicle but also as a tool for business owners and outdoor enthusiasts who need flexible, high-volume load space in a premium package.
Pricing and trim structure
The ES8 is available in two trims. Pricing for the Executive Luxury version starts at 382,800 yuan, which equates to approximately $56,500 for a full purchase, while the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option brings the entry point down to 274,800 yuan. That positions the five-seat variant roughly 5.9 percent below the cost of the comparable three-row ES8. It carries over the brand’s advanced infotainment suite, robust vehicle platform, and smart technology features found across the Nio lineup, combined with respectable all-electric performance.
The move rounds out Nio’s premium large SUV family, which now spans five-, six-, and seven-seat configurations beneath the flagship ES9. The ES8 itself has been a central volume driver for the company. The third-generation version crossed 120,000 cumulative deliveries in China by late June 2026, just 275 days after the first units shipped, though monthly registrations dipped to an estimated 9,000 units in the final month of that run as buyers held off in anticipation of the new five-seat variant. While the model continues to perform strongly at home, Nio has faced more challenging conditions in European markets, where it is working to build recognition and sales momentum.
