Tesla has submitted regulatory paperwork in China that points to a more powerful version of its updated Model Y, according to a new filing with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The documentation describes a dual-motor variant whose output aligns with the Performance grade of the “Juniper” refresh introduced globally at the beginning of 2025. While the company has not confirmed plans to offer this higher-output model outside China, Tesla frequently uses the Chinese market to test product positioning and pricing strategies before expanding to other regions.

Exterior dimensions and weight

The filing lists a length of 4,796 mm, a width of 1,920 mm, and a height of 1,611 mm, all riding on a 2,890 mm wheelbase. That roofline measurement sits roughly 13 mm lower than the approximately 1,624 mm height quoted for the standard and premium 2026 Model Y grades, suggesting a lowered, more athletic stance consistent with the Performance badge. Curb weight appears at 2,027 kg, and the gross vehicle weight rating is given as 2,529 kg across a five-passenger layout.

Powertrain upgrades and performance targets

Key drivetrain specifications further reinforce the top-tier positioning. The application shows a dual-motor arrangement combining a 176 kW front motor with a 291 kW rear unit. By comparison, the current Model Y Performance deploys a front motor rated at 158 kW alongside a 303 kW rear motor. The shift toward greater front-axle contribution hints at a combined real-world output closer to 600 horsepower than 500 horsepower, with the final figure dependent on battery discharge characteristics. The top speed remains 250 km/h, unchanged from the outgoing Performance model, opening the possibility that Tesla has concentrated its engineering efforts on improving the existing 3.5-second 0–60 mph time. The battery itself is a premium nickel-based lithium-ion unit with cells sourced from LG’s Nanjing facility and pack assembly handled by Tesla at Gigafactory Shanghai.

Limited details and market outlook

MIIT filings tend to be sparse and omit cabin specifics, so interior updates remain unconfirmed for now. The document includes two placeholder images of the upcoming 2027 Model Y Performance refresh and notes that an ETC toll transponder will be available as an optional extra. Tesla has not yet disclosed any pricing or launch timing for the more potent variant. Given that the refreshed standard and premium Model Y trims have already begun reaching buyers, the appearance of this homologation entry suggests that a Performance flagship could follow later in the Model Y cycle, keeping the lineup competitive as rival electric crossovers push deeper into performance territory.
