A Canadian teenager has created one of the year’s most distinctive portable devices, a modular handheld called PocketByte. The 16-year-old hobbyist designed the gadget around a core concept of physical adaptability, giving it a magnetic expansion port that accepts interchangeable input modules to instantly alter how the device is used.

A Foundation of Swappable Controls

Sliding on the gamepad module transforms PocketByte into a retro gaming console capable of running titles originally built for platforms such as the Nintendo Game Boy Color, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis. A music module adds a click wheel reminiscent of the Apple iPod Classic, while a keyboard module shifts the device into a personal digital assistant suitable for note-taking and email. These modules connect securely via the magnetic port and let the user switch roles in seconds without rebooting or reconfiguring software.

Modest Hardware with Open Ambitions

Underneath the modular surface, the internal specifications remain straightforward. The system relies on a 2.8-inch IPS display with a resolution of 320 by 240 pixels and an ESP32-S3 processor paired with 8 MB of RAM. Storage is handled exclusively through a microSD slot that supports cards up to 32 GB. Power comes from a 1,500 mAh battery, which the developer says provides “several hours” of gaming and recharges over USB-C. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while onboard audio runs through a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a single mono speaker. The software driving the experience, PocketbyteOS, is released as an open-source platform, inviting community-led improvements and customization.

Targeted Summer Launch at a Sub-$100 Price

Orders are scheduled to open during the summer through the manufacturer’s website. An initial batch of developer kits will ship first to gather feedback, after which a refined version will be produced in larger volumes. The final retail price has not yet been locked down, though the device is projected to land between $70 and $100. This pricing would place PocketByte in competition with other retro-focused and educational handhelds, though its modular architecture gives it a versatile edge rarely seen in this segment.
