Ubisoft’s development pipeline has undergone significant restructuring, leading to major shifts in the future of the Far Cry series. While Far Cry 7 remains the next mainline entry, earlier reports of an integrated extraction shooter element are no longer accurate. That component belonged to a separate project, which has now been shelved.
Cancellation of Project Maverick
According to information obtained by Insider Gaming, the extraction shooter title codenamed Maverick has been cancelled outright. Previous leaks had suggested Maverick might also include a standalone single-player campaign. It now appears that the single-player portion may have been the only fragment of the project to survive the restructuring.
Out of Maverick’s cancellation, a new concept has emerged. A “really ambitious” Far Cry game codenamed Kodiak has been approved, having successfully passed its conceptualization stage earlier this month. Crucially, Kodiak will abandon the extraction shooter format entirely. The project is still in its earliest phases and is understood to be several years away from release.
Far Cry 7’s Development Path
The next core instalment in the series, codenamed Blackbird, is reportedly “seemingly on a good path forward” after navigating its own development hurdles. Plans for Far Cry 7 now include a cooperative multiplayer component that will allow multiple players to explore the game world together. Depending on its reception, this entry could serve as the foundation for a renewed wave of Far Cry titles.
Regarding launch timing, Far Cry 7 was originally expected to arrive in Fall 2025. Although that window appears unlikely, and it remains improbable that a new Far Cry game will ship this year, the calendar still holds several months of potential announcements. Ubisoft also faces a familiar strategic dilemma: determining whether launching any major title in close proximity to Grand Theft Auto VI is a prudent move, a question the publisher will need to weigh carefully.
