Xbox is preparing to announce a new system that would let owners of physical game discs convert them into digital licenses, a move that could reshape how the platform handles game ownership as the industry drifts away from physical media.

A new way to bridge physical and digital libraries

First reported in May, the feature is internally known as Project Positron. It would allow players to validate a disc and receive a permanent digital entitlement to that title, effectively eliminating the need to keep the disc inserted for playback. Microsoft has not publicly commented on the initiative, but signs point to an imminent reveal. Brad Rosetti, who leads the Xbox Insider Program, posted on social media on the evening of July 9 that a significant announcement would arrive the following week.

While Rosetti did not offer specifics, Windows Central’s Jez Corden indicated the unveiling is likely to be Positron. Because the tease came from the Insider Program Lead, the feature will almost certainly launch first to Xbox Insiders for testing before a broader public rollout.

Industry pressures and unanswered hardware questions

The move arrives at a moment of intense debate over the future of physical gaming. Sony’s recent decision to phase out discs has drawn sharp criticism and fueled speculation that both the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox could ship without built-in disc drives. However, separate insider chatter regarding Microsoft’s Project Helix suggests the company has not locked down its hardware plans. Current intelligence points to a possibility that physical disc support may still survive on future Xbox hardware, either as a native drive or via a separate accessory.

Consumer pushback and subscription turbulence

Resistance to an all-digital future continues to build. A petition titled “Don’t Kill the Disc” has gathered more than 250,000 signatures, underscoring the vocal segment of players who want to preserve physical media. The backlash has also spilled into subscription services: a wave of PlayStation Plus cancellations recently prompted Sony to issue 50 percent discount offers to departing subscribers in an effort to retain them. For now, Microsoft appears to be charting a middle path with Positron—offering a conversion tool that acknowledges the shift toward digital while still accommodating those who own physical libraries.
