MagicX has outlined plans for an unconventional new handheld gaming device, releasing a concept design and core specifications while actively soliciting input from its Discord community. The company describes the current retro handheld market as oversaturated, citing a proliferation of near-identical products from numerous manufacturers. With this project, MagicX is attempting to carve out a distinct niche by directly addressing varied performance demands.
A tiered approach to performance and price
The proposed handheld would ship in two distinct configurations. An entry-level variant is slated to feature a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset and carry a target price of $125. For users seeking more power, a premium model built around the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 is planned at $165. This higher-tier version also doubles the memory and storage, moving from 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of UFS storage up to 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of UFS storage. Both editions are expected to include active cooling and a 5-inch display with a resolution of 768 × 1,024 pixels.
A familiar form with community-driven direction
MagicX’s concept imagery reveals a design that openly echoes the clamshell-free slab form of the Nintendo 2DS. The company has made clear that the final product may evolve, and it is making community feedback central to the development process.
