A wave of online speculation recently suggested a fracture between Rockstar Games and Sony after PlayStation-themed marketing for Grand Theft Auto VI briefly disappeared from official channels. Rockstar’s pre-order push initially placed heavy emphasis on the PS5 version, with Sony amplifying the campaign by filling its digital storefronts and social accounts with tropical, Leonida-inspired artwork. Then, roughly a week later, much of that creative material was quietly removed. The visual rollback included the PlayStation mobile app reverting from a themed icon to its standard design, while dashboard banners no longer featured the game’s signature palette.
A Scheduled Campaign Window Closes
According to standard industry practice, the more routine explanation is that the placement was simply booked to conclude by the July 3 window. Even so, the timing proved sensitive enough to ignite viral theories across social media. A popular narrative cast the takedown as a deliberate response by Rockstar, supposedly distancing itself from Sony as the platform holder faces mounting backlash over its planned exit from physical media.
Shifting Disc Policy Fuels Consumer Anxiety
That backlash intensified after Sony confirmed that, starting in January 2028, consumers will no longer be able to purchase new PlayStation titles on physical discs. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from preservationists, retailers, and even lawmakers, all of whom view the move as a major blow to game ownership. Observers quickly connected the policy to Rockstar’s own release strategy, given that the studio has faced separate complaints for offering only a digital code inside a box for some physical editions — a format that blocks resale and does little to satisfy collectors.

In reality, the two companies are almost certainly executing a carefully staggered promotional roadmap. Long-standing anticipation for a third trailer has gone unmet, underlining a pattern in which fresh screenshots or video updates will be parceled out slowly over the months leading to the November 19 launch date. The initial post-pre-order phase is critical, and industry observers note that Sony may have substantially more planned to support the title in the lead-up to release, including persistent rumors of an official PS5 console bundle.
For the moment, Sony appears to have quieted its social promotion while the public furor over physical media subsides. Given the scale of the release, it is only a matter of time before GTA 6 once again takes over the platform’s official feeds as the marketing cycle intensifies.
