LineageOS Brings Android 16 to Retroid Pocket 6 as Updates Roll Out Across Handhelds

The popular custom ROM LineageOS has officially arrived for the Retroid Pocket 6, giving owners of the gaming handheld a direct path to a newer Android build without waiting for the manufacturer. LineageOS 23.2, which is built on Android 16, became available for the device this week and is now listed on the project’s official device wiki. The Pocket 6 ships with Android 13 out of the box, so the community-developed firmware unlocks a more current operating system alongside the typical benefits of custom ROMs, such as enhanced performance and improved battery efficiency.

More Retroid and AYN Devices in the Pipeline

Development activity points to broader support in the near future. A contributor to the project has indicated that official builds are expected to reach the Retroid Pocket 5 and Pocket G2, while recent code references in the project’s GitHub repository confirm that work is already underway for the newly announced Retroid Pocket Nova. Simultaneously, the ROM is being ported to several AYN devices including the Odin 2 series, the Odin 3, and the Thor. For users who prefer to leave the Android ecosystem entirely, developers have also ported the Linux-based Rocknix operating system to many of these same handhelds, enabling operation directly from a microSD card with native support for the Steam client.

Retroid’s First OTA Fixes Power Drain and Adds Features

The LineageOS release comes just over a week after Retroid delivered its first over-the-air software update for the Pocket 6. Designated version 1.0.0.404, the update resolved a power drain problem related to the handheld’s Dual Screen Add-on during sleep mode and corrected a permission error with isSafetyCenterEnabled inside PrebuiltGmsCore that affected the Play Store. It also cleaned up an incorrect string displayed on the lock screen. Beyond fixes, the OTA introduced two new capabilities: a gamepad takeover method featuring vibration feedback and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller haptics support, along with an ultra black mode tailored for the device’s OLED panel.

AYN Odin 3 Gets a Fix-Focused Firmware Refresh

The same week, AYN issued its own OTA for the Odin 3, version 1.0.0.187, though the update was strictly corrective in nature. It refreshed the GPU driver to version 800.72 to address hang issues in graphically demanding games like Zenless Zone Zero, fixed a silent microphone bug encountered during WeChat voice calls, corrected abnormal resolution when connecting to AR glasses, and resolved random crashes when launching PUBG Mobile. Persistent user complaints about the Odin 3’s HDR display quality and fan noise have not yet been addressed, according to discussions on the device’s official Discord channel. Additionally, owners running Rocknix should be aware of a known update error; restoring the original bootloader via the ‘restore_backup_abl’ script is necessary before the OTA can be installed successfully.
