Rockstar Games has yet to launch the full-scale marketing campaign for Grand Theft Auto 6, yet early commercial indicators point to an extraordinary financial debut. Pre-orders opened late last month, and fresh analysis suggests the influx of reservations has surpassed even aggressive internal forecasts, putting the title on track to exceed a projected $7.6 billion in revenue within its first 60 days.
Pre-order momentum reaches historic levels
According to data from Newzoo, a firm specializing in PC and console game analytics, GTA 6 has already accumulated $180 million in pre-orders from the United States and five major European markets alone. When extrapolated globally, total pre-order bookings are estimated at roughly $260 million in approximately three weeks—the largest opening the analytics company has ever recorded. To put that into context, the game is still four months from launch, and a third official trailer has not yet been released.
Launch week revenue could more than triple GTA 5’s pace
As Rockstar prepares to intensify its promotional activity, Newzoo projects that GTA 6 could generate between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion in its first week, combining both the $80 standard edition and the $100 Ultimate edition. That would dwarf the original week-one total of Grand Theft Auto 5, which brought in around $1.15 billion. The sustained pre-order velocity and the absence of a physical disc release—shifting every sale toward higher-margin digital channels—are expected to significantly bolster Rockstar’s revenue share.
Platform dynamics and marketing shifts
Early tracking pointed to PlayStation pre-orders outperforming Xbox at a ratio of six to one, a gap partly attributed to quieter marketing visibility on the Xbox platform. Microsoft pushed back against that characterization, disputing the reported disparity. Meanwhile, Sony faced criticism over an all-digital console push, which led to the removal of some GTA 6 promotional material on PlayStation channels. The adjustment, however, appears to have had little impact on the pace of pre-order bookings, underscoring the title’s broad and resilient consumer demand.
