Waveshare has launched a new compact development platform built around the RISC-V-based ESP32-C5 microcontroller, integrating a small color display into a board priced from approximately $12, excluding shipping. The ESP32-C5 1.47-inch LCD Display is offered in variants with or without pre-soldered pin headers, giving developers flexibility for prototyping or direct integration.

Connectivity and protocol support

The board is designed with smart home applications in mind, combining Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, Thread, and Zigbee connectivity through an onboard antenna. This multi-protocol support allows the device to serve as a central interface or sensor node in heterogeneous home automation environments. A USB Type-C port handles both power delivery and programming, while a microSD card slot provides expandable storage.

Display and sensor capabilities

A 1.47-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 172 × 320 pixels provides a straightforward visual output for control panels and status dashboards. While sharpness is adequate for basic interface elements, the display does not include a touch layer, and contrast and brightness remain limited compared to higher-end panels. The board can interface with additional sensors and actuators, enabling monitoring of temperature, humidity, or gas concentrations for environmental sensing projects. An integrated RGB LED offers a simple method for at-a-glance status indication, such as shifting color to reflect ambient comfort levels derived from sensor readings.
