In the three days since its launch, the Garmin CIRQA has seen its first production run sell through almost immediately. Orders placed now through major retailers show delivery estimates stretching from late August into early October, signaling brisk early demand for the screenless fitness band.
Design process and hardware decisions
Behind the final product lies an extensive design exploration. Garmin designer Collin Murray shared a series of prototype images on LinkedIn, revealing that the team evaluated numerous iterations of the tracking pod, the strap material, and the quick-release band mechanism before settling on the shipped version. The company’s focus, Murray indicated, was on refining wearability and the ease of swapping bands without adding bulk.
Product manager Chrissy Wheeler has since addressed a recurring question about the component selection. The CIRQA uses Garmin’s Elevate 4 optical heart rate sensor rather than the newer Elevate 5 platform. Wheeler explained that the older module has a smaller footprint; adopting the Elevate 5 would have forced a larger case size, which would directly impact all-day comfort. She also clarified that there is no benefit to wearing a Garmin smartwatch alongside the CIRQA during activities, since the system only records data from one device at a time.
Smart features and subscription model
The integrated vibration motor serves more than just alarm prompts. The band generates an hourly haptic nudge if a manually initiated workout remains in progress, acting as a subtle reminder without a screen. When activity tracking kicks in automatically, the CIRQA can pull location data from the paired smartphone’s GPS to log distance — a capability that sets it apart from some rival products in this segment.
Addressing the software business model directly, Wheeler stated that Garmin intends to keep access to core health and fitness data permanently free. Paid subscriptions are reserved only for advanced premium features, a structure that mirrors broader industry trends while keeping routine metrics accessible to all users.
