BYD has taken the wraps off the Seal 08, a new flagship sedan positioned squarely against Tesla’s core models. The fully electric vehicle enters the Chinese market with a starting price of 28,980 USD, undercutting the Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, which currently begins at approximately $34,100 in the same region.
Battery, Range and Charging Performance
The competition extends well beyond the window sticker. The Seal 08 rides on an 800-volt architecture and utilizes BYD’s second-generation Blade LFP battery, offered in two capacities. A 76.7 kWh pack delivers up to 785 km of range under the CLTC test cycle, while the larger 92.1 kWh unit extends that figure to 905 km. That puts the long-range variant comfortably ahead of the Model 3 Long Range’s 830 km CLTC rating. An all-wheel-drive configuration pairs the bigger battery with dual motors producing a combined 510 kW, launching the sedan from 0 to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds — quicker than the pricier Model 3 Performance.
Chassis Technology and Cabin Equipment
BYD has equipped the Seal 08 with features absent from Tesla’s lineup at this price segment. The chassis includes rear-wheel steering, a dual-chamber air suspension with road-preview sensors, and a turning radius of just 4.95 meters despite a body length of 5.15 meters. Inside, occupants are met with a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, a 26-inch augmented reality display, and zero-gravity seats with a massage function available at every seating position.
Market Positioning and Charging Infrastructure
Software refinement and autonomous driving capability remain areas where Tesla holds an advantage. However, BYD bundles its advanced driver-assistance system at no additional cost and operates a fast-charging network in China that is among the most extensive in the country. Taken together, the Seal 08’s combination of aggressive pricing, hardware specifications, and charging support presents a direct and formidable challenge to Tesla’s sedan range.
