ASRock has quietly listed a new entry-level graphics card on its website, revealing a 4 GB version of the Radeon RX 9050 Challenger. This configuration halves the already modest memory found on the 8 GB variant previously confirmed by the company for launch in Asia-Pacific and Latin American markets. Both cards are built around the Navi 44 die and incorporate 16 compute units, providing 1,024 stream processors, which is exactly half the shader count present on the RX 9060 XT, a part that uses the same silicon.
Memory Interface Shrinks Alongside Capacity
The reduction in frame buffer size is accompanied by a narrower memory bus. While the 8 GB model employs a 128-bit interface, the newly surfaced 4 GB version cuts this to 64 bits. Memory speed remains unchanged at 18 Gbps across both variants, meaning the effective bandwidth on the 4 GB card falls proportionally from 288 GB/s to 144 GB/s. ASRock’s product page does not disclose power figures or clocks for either variant.
Budget Positioning in a Strained DRAM Market
The appearance of this lower-tier SKU below an already cut-down 8 GB product underscores how constrained GDDR6 allocation and pricing have become. Surging demand for AI accelerators is pushing memory suppliers to prioritize high-bandwidth memory and server DDR5, tightening the supply of commodity graphics DRAM. By further reducing memory capacity, AMD and its board partners can carve out a more aggressive price point for extremely cost-sensitive segments. However, given that 8 GB is widely viewed as a baseline that already struggles in many modern titles, the practical gaming audience for a 4 GB RX 9050 remains difficult to identify.
ASRock has yet to publish pricing, thermal design power, or a definitive list of availability regions for either configuration. The 8 GB version was explicitly earmarked only for Asia-Pacific and Latin America, bypassing Europe and the United States, and the documentation for the 4 GB card suggests it will follow the same regional budget strategy rather than receiving a global release.
