The smart home has not been a big focus for Apple for a while. But now, after its first car didn’t succeed, Apple seems to be looking at easier projects, like competing with existing products such as the Arlo Video Doorbell 2K 2nd Generation, which is currently priced at $141.49 on Amazon.
New Services and Offerings
Reports suggest that Apple’s new interest in smart home tech is tied to the idea of selling more services, like iCloud storage for users to save their personal security videos. It’s likely that the company’s first smart doorbell will be sold along with Apple-branded indoor cameras and the HomePod Smart Home Display.
Development Stage
The new "homeOS" device is said to be in the very early phases of development and may end up like the Apple Car. Yet, it might have a chance as a product that could be licensed to other brands, similar to the next-gen CarPlay that’s being used in luxury cars.
No matter what happens, the "Apple Doorbell" is said to be designed to work with Face ID or a similar technology, allowing users to unlock their front door just by looking at it. However, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman mentioned that it might also work with smart locks made by other brands, which could introduce potential risks to this new security system.
