Xiaomi removes popular feature from HyperOS

In an unexpected turn of events, Xiaomi has decided to eliminate a beloved feature that allowed users to play videos in the background. Previously available within MIUI 12, the background video playback option will no longer be part of HyperOS. This decision by the Chinese tech giant seems to have been influenced by a warning from Google regarding this functionality.

Removal of Background Video Playback Feature

Initially, the capability to play videos with the screen off was a premium feature, enabling users to enjoy content without needing a subscription. This feature was particularly handy on platforms like YouTube, allowing even non-premium users to listen to music in the background hassle-free.

Xiaomi will gradually phase out this feature through upcoming updates, meaning users will no longer find the option to play videos with the screen off within the video toolbox. This toolbox, known for its practical functionalities, was a highlight of MIUI 12. However, in the latest iteration, MIUI 15 (HyperOS), this feature will be absent. Those keen on retaining this functionality will need to opt for YouTube's Premium subscription.

Important Update for MIUI Users

Attention to users of MIUI 12, MIUI 13, MIUI 14, and HyperOS (MIUI 15): With the update to the aforementioned versions of the security app, the ability to play videos with the screen turned off will be disabled. Xiaomi has officially clarified that this change is in line with their adherence to Google's policies.

While this development may disappoint users, it is crucial to recognize that alternative methods exist. Android being an open-source system allows for customization and modifications by users who are willing to explore different avenues.
