  • Final Fantasy 16 Xbox Sales Decline After Game Pass Omission

Final Fantasy 16 Xbox Sales Decline After Game Pass Omission

    Key Takeaways

    1. Final Fantasy 16 is now available on Xbox, but its launch was not heavily promoted, leading to low traction on Xbox Series X|S.
    2. The game ranks between the 350th and 400th spots for most-played games on Xbox, despite the Standard and Complete Editions performing better in sales.
    3. Community theories suggest the late Xbox release, competition from PC sales, and absence from Xbox Game Pass may contribute to its underwhelming performance.
    4. Final Fantasy 16 also struggled on PS5, with sales declining after an initial strong start, raising questions about JRPG success on Xbox.
    5. Microsoft is shifting focus towards multi-platform publishing and new handheld Windows devices, which may result in fewer Xbox-exclusive releases in the future.

At a recent event, Microsoft revealed that the Xbox version of Final Fantasy 16 is now available. Square Enix has been making its games accessible on various platforms, but the RPG’s launch on Xbox was not heavily promoted. Two years after its release on PS5, the game is struggling to gain traction on Xbox Series X|S. In fact, it is ranking unexpectedly low on Microsoft’s lists for most-played and top-paid games.

    Game Rankings and Performance

The situation is fluid, with data that changes regularly. Currently, Final Fantasy 16’s Xbox port sits between the 350th and 400th spots for most-played games. However, the news is a bit brighter in terms of sales; the Standard Edition is within the top 50, and the Complete Edition is in the top 30. Still, many gamers believe that the game’s performance is underwhelming for a title from a well-known company like Square Enix.

    Community Theories

On the ResetEra forums, critics have been sharing their thoughts on why Final Fantasy 16 is struggling to attract a big audience on Xbox. One reason could be that it was a late release for a game that has been available for PS5 players since 2023 and for PC players since 2024. Many Xbox users also play on PCs due to Play Anywhere, which means some may have already bought the RPG on Steam or the Epic Games Store. Another notable point is that the absence of Final Fantasy 16 from Xbox Game Pass might be affecting player numbers.

    Broader Context

To be fair to Microsoft, Final Fantasy 16 didn’t perform as expected on PS5 either. The publisher acknowledged that sales declined after a strong start, especially when compared to other titles from Square Enix. Other Final Fantasy games, despite being more popular on Nintendo and PlayStation, have drawn in more players on Xbox. The idea that JRPGs can’t succeed on Xbox is now being questioned. While players are divided on its subgenres, the popular game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 clearly incorporates JRPG elements.

Microsoft is now focusing more on publishing across multiple platforms and on new handheld Windows devices. This shift may lead to fewer Xbox Series X|S-exclusive releases in the near future.

  • Halo PS5 Evidence Discovered as Xbox Games Go Cross-Platform

Halo PS5 Evidence Discovered as Xbox Games Go Cross-Platform

    Key Takeaways

    1. A new Halo game may be coming to PS5, following successful Xbox exclusives like Forza Horizon 5.
    2. Reliable leaks from Grunt.api suggest a potential PS5 release for a new Halo title or possibly Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
    3. Microsoft is expected to announce a new Halo game, with hints made at the Xbox Games Showcase for a 2026 release.
    4. The move to bring Xbox games to other platforms may weaken the appeal of Xbox consoles compared to PS5.
    5. There is interest from Microsoft in developing titles for the Switch 2, but no specific Halo port hints have been found yet.

Following the success of previous Xbox exclusives like Forza Horizon 5, there’s a possibility that a new Halo game could be on its way to the PS5. This first-person shooter has played a major role in the success of Microsoft’s gaming consoles. Rumors have been floating around about the franchise potentially moving to the competing console. Recently, a dataminer found hints of an upcoming Halo game for PS5 while checking a retail API.

    Reliable Sources for Leaks

Grunt.api has been known for its accurate leaks regarding Halo in the past. Some players thought Halo Infinite would be the first game in the series to appear on PlayStation. Launched on Xbox and PC in 2021, it featured a free-to-play multiplayer mode, but player numbers have declined. A PS5 version could give the game the boost it needs. Additionally, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which includes several titles, is another strong contender. However, Grunt.api suggests that the upcoming PS5 release could have a completely new title.

    Future Announcements Expected

The dataminer also believes that Microsoft might soon reveal a new Halo game. At the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8th, Phil Spencer hinted at the “return of a classic that’s been with us since the beginning” set for 2026. It’s known that several Halo games are being developed with Unreal Engine 5. The likelihood of these projects being available on PlayStation seems to be increasing.

With Microsoft focusing on software and services, transferring Xbox games to other systems has become a common strategy. This move might be detrimental to the Xbox Series X|S, as fewer exclusives mean there is less incentive to choose an Xbox over a PS5 or PS5 Pro. A Halo game on PS5 would give potential buyers another reason to consider the now pricier Xbox consoles as less appealing.

    Potential for Switch 2 Port

While Microsoft is also interested in developing titles for the Switch 2, Grunt.api did not uncover any hints regarding this handheld device. Even with Microsoft’s recent announcement of the ROG Xbox Ally, they might find a Halo port for Switch 2 hard to resist.

  • Xbox PC Branding May Signal New Windows Console Marketing Plans

Xbox PC Branding May Signal New Windows Console Marketing Plans

    Key Takeaways

    1. Microsoft is using the term “Xbox PC” for Windows versions of games, indicating a possible shift in how they identify Xbox content for PC users.
    2. The term “Xbox PC” may help reduce confusion between Xbox console games and those available on Windows, rather than signaling a new platform.
    3. Rumors suggest a new Xbox console could be based on Windows, with potential plans for a handheld device in partnership with Asus.
    4. Sales of Xbox Series X|S consoles are declining as Microsoft focuses on cross-platform publishing and integration with Windows.
    5. The upcoming Xbox Games Showcase may reveal new marketing strategies to enhance the connection between Xbox gaming and Windows PCs.

In the beginning of May, the Xbox Wire blog revealed the remaster of Gears of War: Reloaded. A few keen-eyed readers noticed that Microsoft is labeling the Windows version as “Xbox PC.” While this term wasn’t alarming, it was different from the usual way the company lists games on the Microsoft Store. Recently, gamers spotted “Xbox PC” once again in a trailer for Mio: Memories in Orbit. Jez Corden from Windows Central has raised questions about whether this change hints at how Microsoft might promote a new Xbox console that is rumored to be in the works.

    New Labels and Fan Theories

Some fans think that Xbox PC could indicate a brand new platform. However, it’s more probable that it’s just an easier way to identify Xbox-related content aimed at Windows users. Corden highlights that it can be confusing to tell apart the Xbox Windows app from the console version. Additionally, while many new Series X and S games can be played on PC, not all titles are available. The term Xbox PC helps to reduce any misunderstandings.

    Future Console Speculations

There are signs that any new Xbox console could be based on Windows. There’s talk of a Project Kennan, which is rumored to be a partnership with Asus to create an Xbox version of a ROG Ally handheld PC. This device would include an Xbox controller setup and a full-screen user interface that would make using Windows feel more like playing on a console. Microsoft is also said to have been working on another Xbox handheld that was expected to come out in 2027, but that project seems to be on pause so they can focus on current Windows handheld devices.

    The Changing Landscape of Xbox

Sales for the Xbox Series X|S consoles are falling as Microsoft shifts its attention to cross-platform publishing. Instead of making a gaming system with exclusive software, Microsoft is merging its consoles with Windows machines. The Xbox PC label could become more important in describing this evolving ecosystem.

So far, Microsoft hasn’t revealed any new marketing strategies. However, the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase might give a sneak peek at plans to better connect Xbox gaming with Windows PCs.

    4. Xbox Exclusives on PlayStation: Hellblade 2 joins other Xbox titles like Indiana Jones and potential Halo games coming to PlayStation.
    5. Phil Spencer’s Strategy: Xbox Chief Phil Spencer emphasizes the need for creativity and adaptability in gaming, moving away from traditional console limitations.

Ninja Theory, known for its games like Heavenly Sword and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, has shared that the sequel to Hellblade will be available on PlayStation 5 “this summer.”

    New Features for Players

The UK-based studio made the announcement on X, revealing that there will be “some exciting new features” coming in a free update for players on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Steam.

Originally, Hellblade was a timed exclusive for PlayStation 4 and PC when it launched in 2017. Afterward, it was made available on Nintendo Switch in 2019, and then on Xbox Series X|S in 2021.

    Upcoming Titles

Hellblade 2 marks the newest Xbox exclusive making its debut on Sony’s PlayStation. Indiana Jones And The Great Circle is also expected to launch on PS5 this coming spring, alongside Forza Horizon 5. There are strong rumors suggesting that some Halo series titles might be heading to this platform, as well as the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and the new entry in the Gears of War franchise.

The Verge has reported that Microsoft is looking into ports for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, although details on that remain sparse at this time.

    Phil Spencer’s Vision

Earlier last year, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer spoke to Bloomberg, stating, “I do not see sort of red lines in our portfolio that say ‘thou must not.” He emphasized the need for the company to be “creative and adaptive to new business models, new devices, new ways of access. We’re not going to grow the market with $1,000 consoles.”

With Hellblade 2’s arrival on PlayStation, it seems that the gaming landscape continues to evolve, with more possibilities emerging for players across different platforms.

One of the most immersive shooting games is returning on May 20, 2025. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy – Enhanced Edition is bringing back the beloved games Shadow of Chornobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat in a fully updated format, available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The great news is that anyone who already has the original titles will receive the remastered versions without any additional charges. Moreover, the newly updated editions might attract new players interested in this iconic series.

    A Unique Gaming Experience

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series combines shooting, role-playing, and survival gameplay in a vast open-world environment. This area is not only highly radioactive but is also filled with bizarre anomalies and mutated creatures.

    Thrilling and Unpredictable Gameplay

What makes the gameplay engaging is its unpredictable nature. Combat is extremely fast-paced, ammunition is scarce, and any encounter with bandits, soldiers, or mutated beasts can be deadly. Players must gather their own equipment, fix damaged weapons, search for rare artifacts, and interact with various factions, each with its own motives.

    Modernized Yet Authentic

The remastered versions elevate the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. classics to contemporary technical standards while maintaining their core essence. Players can look forward to upgraded textures, revamped 3D models, more lifelike skyboxes, improved water effects, and enhanced lighting and weather dynamics, all leading to a remarkable visual improvement. Cut-scenes have been re-rendered in 4K, the field of view for weapons has been adjusted, and the entire user interface and heads-up display have been revamped to remain faithful to the original style. The update also brings better controls and a variety of quality-of-life enhancements.

    Enhanced Features and Accessibility

The remasters now offer complete controller support, compatibility with Steam Deck and Steam Workshop, along with integrated achievements. On PS5, the games utilize DualSense features such as adaptive triggers and built-in speakers. Although the main gameplay remains the same and no new content has been introduced, numerous bugs have been fixed, and overall gameplay handling has improved significantly.

Anyone who already owns one of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games will receive the corresponding remaster for free on May 20 – available on PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store) as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. New players can purchase the complete remastered trilogy for $40 or buy each individual game for about $20.

  • Microsoft Gaming Revenue Grows Despite Declining Xbox Sales

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Grows Despite Declining Xbox Sales

    Key Takeaways

    1. Microsoft Gaming’s Q1 2025 revenue increased by 5% compared to Q1 2024, despite a 6% drop in hardware sales due to weak Xbox console performance.

    2. The availability of fewer exclusive games for Xbox, with previously Xbox-only titles now on PlayStation, is impacting the user experience.

    3. The sales gap between PS5 and Xbox consoles is widening, with PS5 outselling Xbox Series X|S by nearly 3 million units in the past year.

    4. While overall hardware sales in the gaming sector are declining, Microsoft is seeing growth in software and subscription services, with an 8% increase in digital services revenue.

    5. Microsoft is exploring new hardware options, including a rumored handheld device and the possibility of a new Windows-based Xbox console by 2027 or 2028.

As the sales figures for Q1 2025 start to emerge, Microsoft Gaming has recently released its earnings report. The revenue has seen a 5% increase from January to March when compared to the same period in 2024. On the flip side, hardware sales took a hit, dropping by 6%, mainly due to sluggish Xbox console sales. This situation indicates that the company is increasingly depending on Xbox Game Pass, cloud gaming, and cross-platform publishing to drive its growth.

    Limited Exclusives

For those who own an Xbox Series X|S, the experience is becoming less rewarding as there are now few exclusive perks. Games that were once Xbox-only, such as Forza Horizon 5, are now available on Sony’s PS5. Additionally, while titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle debuted on Xbox and PCs, they are also accessible on PlayStation. In other news, Xbox Cloud Gaming has expanded its reach, now compatible with a broader range of mobile devices and Smart TVs.

    Competition Escalates

Recent data from VGChartz shows that the sales gap between PS5 and Xbox consoles is widening. In the last year alone, 2.97 million more PS5 units have been sold compared to the Series X|S. Both Microsoft and Sony may find it difficult to rival Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2.

    Shifting Focus

Overall hardware sales in the gaming sector are declining in the US. However, Microsoft is faring better in the software and subscription areas. An 8% rise in digital services revenue has helped offset losses from changing strategies. The Play Anywhere initiative encourages gamers to enjoy titles like Call of Duty through Xbox Game Pass on their current consoles.

While Microsoft Gaming may be taking a breather from hardware, it hasn’t completely lost interest. Project Kennan is rumored to be a handheld device made by Asus, potentially featuring an Xbox interface and controls. CEO Phil Spencer has reassured supporters that the company remains committed to creating gaming systems. There are whispers that a new Windows-based Xbox console could debut in 2027 or 2028, alongside leaks about three new Xbox controllers that offer cloud gaming features.
