Tensor G4 shows lower performance according to Geekbench scores compared to Tensor G3.

Leaks and rumors surrounding Google’s upcoming Tensor G4 chip suggest that it may not offer a significant improvement over its predecessor, the Tensor G3.

A Geekbench listing has recently emerged for a new Google chipset, believed to be the Tensor G4, adding some credibility to these claims. The listing, under the codename “Google Tokay,” does not specify which smartphone it is associated with, but possibilities include the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, or the leaked Pixel Fold 2.

    Specs and Performance

While the smartphone model remains uncertain, what is important is the chip powering it. According to the listing, the device is equipped with one Cortex-X4/X5 core clocked at 3.1 GHz, three Cortex-A7xx cores at 2.6 GHz, and four Cortex-A5xx cores at 1.95 GHz. This brings the total CPU core count to eight, one less than the nine cores found in the Tensor G3. The device also features an Arm Mali G715 GPU and 8GB of RAM.

However, the performance of the Tensor G4 falls short compared to its predecessor. The Tensor G3 achieves Geekbench scores of 1268 and 3510, while the new chip only reaches 1082/1024 in single-core tests and 3121/2788 in multi-core tests.

    Manufacturing Process and Future Expectations

The Tensor G4 is expected to utilize the same 4LPP+ manufacturing process as Samsung’s Exynos 2400. While the Exynos 2400 can compete with flagship chips from Qualcomm and MediaTek, it remains uncertain if the Tensor G4 will achieve the same level of performance.

Based on current rumors, it appears that the Tensor G4 will not be a significant upgrade. However, there are expectations for performance improvements with the upcoming Tensor G5. Rumors suggest that the Tensor G5 will be custom-designed by Google and manufactured by TSMC, which should result in better performance and efficiency. It is important to note that these are early speculations, so it is advisable to take this information with a pinch of salt.

Alleged Google Pixel Fold 2 in Development, Features Tensor G4 and 16GB RAM

Last year, Google announced its entry into the foldable phone market with the Google Pixel Fold. Now, rumors suggest that the brand is preparing to unveil its successor, the Pixel Fold 2. A recent report by Android Authority has provided some insights into the key specifications of the upcoming device, as well as its expected launch timeframe.

Google Pixel Fold 2 Key Specifications (Rumored)

According to an anonymous source mentioned in the report, Google has been conducting internal tests on the Pixel Fold 2 for the past few months. It has been discovered that the prototype units of the Pixel Fold 2 are powered by a chipset codenamed “zumapro.” This is interesting because the previous Pixel 8 series was powered by the Tensor G3 chip, which had the codename “zuma.” This suggests that the zumapro chip could be the next-generation Tensor G4 chip for the Pixel Fold 2. It’s worth noting that the original Pixel Fold 2 featured the Tensor G2 chip.

The Tensor G4 chip is expected to be manufactured by Samsung and will likely come equipped with ARM Cortex-X4, A720, and A520 CPU cores. In terms of memory and storage, the Pixel Fold 2 is rumored to have 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of UFS 4.0 storage. This is a significant upgrade compared to the original Pixel Fold, which had 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Additionally, there are speculations that the Pixel Fold 2 may also feature the rumored Pixel AI assistant.

Google Pixel Fold 2 Launch Timeframe (Rumored)

According to the report, the Pixel Fold 2 is currently in the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) stage. This suggests that it may still be several months away from entering mass production. Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro in October this year, both featuring the Tensor G4 chip. With the Pixel Fold 2 also rumored to have the same chip, there is a possibility that it may be launched alongside the Pixel 9 series.
