Microsoft Surface Pro: New 2-in-1 with 3:2 Display and Intel Processors

Microsoft has unveiled the Surface Pro 11th Intel Edition at the AI Tour event today in New York City, instead of the anticipated Surface Pro 12 for Business. This new model marks the third Surface Pro launch in just one year, following the releases of the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Pro 11 last spring.

    Processor Details

As predicted, the latest Surface Pro is equipped with Intel’s Lunar Lake processors, available in Core Ultra 5 236V, Core Ultra 5 238V, Core Ultra 7 266V, and Core Ultra 7 268V versions. It’s worth mentioning that while all these processors use the same Lion Cove P and Skymont E CPU cores, Intel differentiates the ‘6V’ and ‘8V’ models with 16 GB and 32 GB of RAM, respectively. The Core Ultra 5 variants also include Intel’s Arc Graphics 130V integrated GPU, which is not as powerful as the Arc Graphics 140V found in the Core Ultra 7 versions.

    Features and Specifications

In addition, the new Surface Pro carries over many features from the Surface Pro 11 (currently priced at $989.99 on Amazon), including an optional OLED display. However, this latest version comes with Windows 11 Pro pre-installed, not the ARM version, and introduces an NFC chip for the first time. Microsoft claims that the battery life can last up to 14 hours, although the specific capacity details have not been disclosed yet.

    Pricing and Availability

The Surface Pro 11th Edition Intel is available starting at $1,499.99 and will start shipping on February 18. Interestingly, today’s Surface Pro launch also aligns with a refresh of the Surface Laptop and a new USB 4 dock, which we have discussed in detail through their respective links.

  • Google Drive for Desktop Beta Supports Windows 11 ARM64 Devices

Google Drive for Desktop Beta Supports Windows 11 ARM64 Devices

Software compatibility remains a big issue for Windows 11 ARM64 usage, possibly even more than on Apple’s M series Macs. While Microsoft’s Prism emulator has improved its x86 emulation capabilities compared to earlier versions, the performance of native applications generally won’t match that of those that are emulated. Developers are slowly rolling out ARM64-optimized apps, with Signal Messenger being one of the latest entrants.

Beta Release of Drive for Desktop

In light of this, Google has launched a beta version of Drive for Desktop that is made especially for Windows 11 ARM64 devices. This means that the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 (currently priced at $899 on Amazon) which were assessed earlier this year should now work well with Google’s widely used cloud storage. This also applies to other devices that are powered by Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite chips.

    Important Caveats

However, there are some important things to keep in mind for now. For one, the Drive for Desktop version is still in beta testing. It also does not support the Outlook Meet plugin at this moment. Because of this, Google advises users to only work with backed-up data or information that isn’t critical. If you’re curious about trying this early version, you can get the 279 MB installer that is available on Google Drive. For more information, check out Google’s forum post.

  • Windows 11 Removing Calendar and Mail Apps: What You Need to Know

Windows 11 Removing Calendar and Mail Apps: What You Need to Know

Microsoft has been really active this year in updating its Windows environment to meet new standards. They have been promoting the use of Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite chipsets with devices like the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 (currently priced at $1,099.99 on Amazon). At the same time, they are working on improving Windows with better performance for ARM.

End of an Era for Windows Mail and Calendar

In a recent blog entry, Microsoft announced that 2024 will be the final year for Windows Mail and Calendar. The support for these services will officially cease on December 31, 2024, which means users won’t be able to send or receive emails starting January 1, 2025.

    Transition to Outlook

Users can, however, transfer their data to the new Outlook for Windows. Microsoft is banking on this new Outlook being the go-to choice for those who currently rely on Mail and Calendar. Whether users will migrate over is still uncertain, especially since the new Outlook for Windows lacks many features that other email services offer, such as renaming mailboxes.

    Changes for Classic Outlook

The classic Outlook desktop application that comes with the Office suite is also on the chopping block. For the time being, people can still buy Microsoft Office 2024 without needing to pay a monthly subscription. For more information, you can check out Microsoft’s blog post.

  • Microsoft Plans Surface Pro 11 Refresh with Upgraded CPU and GPU

Microsoft Plans Surface Pro 11 Refresh with Upgraded CPU and GPU

Microsoft was among the first to launch devices powered by Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite in May, showcasing the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11. Following this, Qualcomm has rolled out new variants of the Snapdragon X Plus, one of which we reviewed earlier this month. Recently, Roland Quandt has shared insights about an updated version of the Surface Pro 11 being developed.

    New Specifications

The refreshed model is not expected to be a less expensive Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 variant. Instead, Quandt has indicated that Microsoft may be focusing on an X1E-84-100 version of its latest 2-in-1 device, which currently maxes out at the X1E-80-100 (currently priced at $1,399.99 on Amazon). The X1E-84-100 boasts a higher boost CPU clock speed compared to the X1E-80-100 and features a more robust Adreno X1-85 GPU.

    Performance Comparison

While the X1E-80-100 is slightly behind the X1E-84-100 by 1% in our benchmarks, its GPU is approximately 16% weaker than that of the latter. Although Microsoft has yet to announce anything officially, the X1E-84-100 variant of the Surface Pro 11 has been spotted at several retailers across Europe, all listed under the model number ‘ZIA-00007’. As of now, the specific release date is still uncertain, but the expected retail price for ZIA-00007 is between €1,849 and €1,929 throughout the Eurozone, featuring 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD.

Retailers like Atea, Bijelo Jaje, Diomi, Euronics (1) (2), Mikronis, and Plasico have all been mentioned by Roland Quandt and WinFuture.
