According to a French article on Dealabs by the well-known leaker billbil-kun, who has a good track record for leaks like the pricing of the PlayStation Anniversary Edition and the design of the PS5 Pro, Sony seems to be getting ready to launch black versions of its PlayStation 5 accessories. The items that are rumored to be included are:

    Accessory Color Changes

Currently, all these accessories are only sold in white, apart from the DualSense Edge Controller, which has also been offered in gray due to the limited anniversary edition. Billbil-kun suggests that we might see the announcement for these new color options in about a month, although there has been no exact date shared. • PS5 Pro vs PS5: Energy Efficiency and FPS Boost Comparison

PS5 Pro vs PS5: Energy Efficiency and FPS Boost Comparison

The Sony PlayStation 5 Pro hit the market on November 7, retailing for $699.99 in the United States. This model, priced $200 more than the original PS5, boasts a significant upgrade in GPU performance, thanks to Sony’s unique PSSR upsampling technology. While it retains the same Zen 2 CPU, it has a 10% higher clock speed and an additional 2 GB of DDR5 RAM, among other enhancements. These features are expected to improve the gaming experience, making it noticeably better for both PS5 Pro-optimized and standard PS5 games.

    Power Consumption Insights

As expected, the PS5 Pro’s enhanced capabilities come with increased power usage. Digital Foundry has observed a slight yet noticeable difference in energy consumption when comparing the base PS5 to the PS5 Pro. Interestingly, the PS5 Slim appears to have a less efficient SoC, leading to higher power consumption than the original PS5.

When testing Elden Ring in “Quality” mode, the PS5 Pro’s power draw ranges from 228 to 230 W, while the standard PS5 uses less, around 215 to 218 W. The PS5 Slim stands out in this test, as it consumes nearly the same amount of power as the PS5 Pro, despite being built with a 6 nm SoC that should ideally use less energy.

    Game Performance Comparisons

In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the PS5 Pro consumes over 230 W, while the base PS5’s usage varies between 200 and 216 W. The PS5 Slim again shows higher power consumption, deviating from the expected trend.

In F1 24 with “Quality” mode activated, the PS5 Pro’s power draw climbs above 230 W, peaking at around 240 W. This uptick in energy consumption is aligned with noticeable improvements in graphics quality, better ray tracing, and more stable frame rates. According to Digital Foundry, the PS5 Pro achieves a performance boost of 30-35% in Elden Ring’s “Quality” mode, despite the game not being specifically enhanced for the Pro version. This leads to frame rates consistently above 50 FPS, while the original PS5 experiences frame rates that fluctuate in the low-to-mid 40s, sometimes dipping into the high 30s.

    Impressive Energy Efficiency

The performance metrics for Elden Ring are striking, considering the console only needs about 12 W more energy, or 5.5%, to deliver a performance increase of up to 35%.

For those interested in the ray tracing enhancements, Alan Wake 2 is a prime example of the PS5 Pro’s capabilities. Digital Foundry highlights the effective ray-traced reflections in the 30 FPS RT mode. Likewise, F1 24 benefits from ray tracing reflections and RT Ambient Occlusion, adding to the features available in the base PS5 version.

For more detailed information regarding the upgrades offered by the PS5 Pro, including PSSR, be sure to check out Digital Foundry’s review linked below.

  • Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Delay Indefinitely in India

Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Delay Indefinitely in India

Sony has postponed the release of the PlayStation 5 Pro in India due to the unavailability of the telecom spectrum for Wi-Fi 7 in the country. This gaming console operates on the 6GHz frequency band necessary for its IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) certified network radios.

    Official Confirmation

In a statement sent to High Chaos Run, Sony stated that the “PS5 Pro will not be offered in certain countries (including India at this time) where the 6GHz wireless band used in IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) is not permitted yet.”

    Regulatory Delays

As per a report from Business Standard, India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has delayed its decision regarding this spectrum allocation and has until 2027 to make a final decision.

    Future Spectrum Use

Sources quoted by the Financial Express have mentioned that India plans to designate the upper segment of the band (6425-7125 MHz) for telecommunications companies for their 5G and 6G services. Moreover, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) utilizes this network for satellite communications and has raised concerns about potential interference if the band is allocated for telecom purposes.

  • Sony Reports PlayStation Network Growth Amid PS5 Sales Decline

Sony Reports PlayStation Network Growth Amid PS5 Sales Decline

Sony has recently begun to sell the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) openly, after showcasing the console in mid-September. To put it simply, the PS5 Pro is no longer facing the stock problems that affected the PS5 during its early years. Nevertheless, the rise in availability of consoles like the PS5 Slim (curr. $449.99 on Amazon) has not led to better sales numbers.

    Sales Fluctuations

In fact, Sony has announced a notable decline in PS5 hardware sales when compared year-on-year. As per Tom Warren from The Verge, hardware sales reached 4.9 million in the second quarter of Sony’s prior financial year. Following that, it managed to sell 8.2 million units in the third quarter before falling back to 4.5 million units in Q4.

    Recent Performance

In stark contrast, Sony reported that it sold 2.4 million PS5 units in the first quarter of FY24, indicating a 27% decrease from the previous year. Although the company has shown better performance in Q2, its hardware sales remain 22% below the figures from 2023. Overall, expectations are that Q3 will be a stronger quarter, especially with the addition of PS5 Pro sales.

    Game Sales Growth

On the other hand, game sales have surged by 28% during the same timeframe. Additionally, the number of active PlayStation Network users has climbed by over 8%, increasing from 107 million to 116 million. However, it’s important to note that this number is still below the 123 million monthly active users that Sony reported in Q3 FY2023.

  • PlayStation 5 Pro Now Available: No Stock Shortages

PlayStation 5 Pro Now Available: No Stock Shortages

Sony has begun sending out PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) units to customers who pre-ordered. Just to remind you, the company started taking orders on September 26, which was a little over two weeks after the console’s official announcement. Good news is, you can still order the PS5 Pro worldwide, even as of now.

    Stock Situation

This indicates that Sony’s new console isn’t facing the stock problems that plagued the original PS5. For example, it was quite challenging to find the PS5 for most of the time until about this period last year. The same issue has been seen with the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition, which some scalpers tried to sell for more than $35,000.

    Pricing and Availability

On the other hand, the PS5 Pro is available for purchase from Amazon, Best Buy, Sony, and several other retailers in the US for $699, and it has relatively short waiting times. However, it’s important to note that Sony currently limits orders to one console per customer. Strangely, the same can’t be said for the PS5 Pro’s disc drive, which is expected to sell for $79. Sadly, it’s not clear when this accessory will be available for order again.

    Retailers Offering the Console

Amazon, Best Buy, and Sony are just some of the places where you can find the PS5 Pro. The excitement around this new console seems to be much more stable compared to its predecessor, making it easier for gamers to get their hands on it.

  • Sony PS5 Pro Unboxing and Teardown with 50+ Game Updates

Sony PS5 Pro Unboxing and Teardown with 50+ Game Updates

The Sony PlayStation 5 Pro is set to begin shipping on Thursday, November 7. For those eager to learn more ahead of the release, an unboxing video by Digital Foundry (embedded below) is now available. It looks like Sony is again opting for packaging that resembles the PlayStation 5 Slim. Inside the box, alongside the console, you’ll find a USB-C to USB-C cable, an HDMI 2.1 cable, and a DualSense controller. However, if you need a vertical stand, you’ll have to buy that separately.

    Size Comparisons and Specs

In the video, which runs for just under ten minutes, viewers can see a size comparison between the new PS5 Pro, the PS5 Slim, and the standard PlayStation 5. This is followed by a comparison with the original PlayStation 2. The specifications of the PlayStation 5 Pro are also displayed, as outlined in the console’s user manual. It states that the PS5 Pro has a nominal GPU performance of 16.7 TFLOPs, 16 GB of GDDR5, and an extra 2 GB DDR5 RAM, along with support for Wi-Fi 7. The maximum power draw is 390 watts.

    Disassembly and Game Updates

Meanwhile, the Portuguese YouTube channel TAG has already taken apart the PlayStation 5 Pro to examine its components. As expected, the design of the PS5 Pro is nearly identical to that of the PS5 Slim, with the exception of a slightly larger cooling system. Sony has also released a list of games on the PlayStation Blog that will be updated at launch to take advantage of the more powerful hardware, offering enhancements like higher frame rates, resolutions, and improved ray tracing.

More games are anticipated to be optimized for the PS5 Pro in the future. Even titles that do not receive updates will still enjoy the benefits of the upgraded hardware, particularly in terms of more stable frame rates. In cases of dynamic resolution, players can expect a higher average pixel count, resulting in a more detailed gaming experience.

  • Sony Xperia 1 VI Gets New Color and Double Storage Upgrade

Sony Xperia 1 VI Gets New Color and Double Storage Upgrade

Sony is currently offering the Xperia 1 VI, which it launched in June. Up until now, the device has been offered globally in three shades, which the company calls Black, Khaki Green, and Platinum Silver. Additionally, the Xperia 1 VI has been available only with 256 GB of storage.

    New Colour and Storage Options

Now, Sony has rolled out a new fourth colour option along with a higher storage capacity of 512 GB. The company claims that the new Scarlet finish ‘adds a fresh and vibrant appearance’ to the Xperia 1 VI. Interestingly, the Scarlet option had been shown alongside the other three colours back in May. This new variant features a glass back with a matte finish that matches the mid-frame.

    Hardware Remains the Same

The Scarlet version keeps the same core hardware as its Black, Khaki Green, and Platinum Silver versions. It is equipped with a 6.5-inch LTPO OLED display that supports 120 Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution, powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and a 5,000 mAh battery. The camera specifications have not changed either; further insights can be found in our review.

As it is, the new Scarlet model is available exclusively with 512 GB of storage in Europe and the UK, priced at €1,499 and £1,399, respectively. This pricing reflects an increase of €100 and £100 compared to its 256 GB models. In contrast, the Scarlet option in the US comes with 256 GB of storage and is available through retailers like Amazon, with a price tag of $1,209.99 before taxes.

  • Sony Xperia 1 VI Update Enhances Connectivity Features

Sony Xperia 1 VI Update Enhances Connectivity Features

Sony has shared news about two significant updates for the Xperia 1 VI this week. First, a new Scarlet color option has been launched, featuring 512 GB of storage globally. We have provided complete details on this release separately. Interestingly, although the US market has also seen the Scarlet edition, it is still limited to 256 GB of storage (curr. $1,209.99 on Amazon).

    Connectivity Upgrade

In addition to the new color, Sony has made a major upgrade to the connectivity of all Xperia 1 VI models. They have introduced Wi-Fi 7 support, which is being rolled out through a fresh software update. Previously, the Xperia 1 VI was capped at Wi-Fi 6E, which reached data rates of 1,824 Mbit/s in tests conducted earlier this year.

    Enhanced Performance

Wi-Fi 7 theoretically provides up to 46 Gbit/s bandwidth, a big jump from the 9.6 Gbit/s offered by Wi-Fi 6E. While it’s unlikely that devices will reach these peak speeds, Wi-Fi 7 is designed to enhance network efficiency and stability, while also lowering power consumption. Moreover, the introduction of Multi-Link Operation (MLO) means that the Xperia 1 VI can now send and receive data at the same time across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz networks, effectively reducing latency.

    Requirements for Upgrade

To utilize these network improvements, the Xperia 1 VI must be paired with a router that supports Wi-Fi 7. In addition, Sony is releasing the Wi-Fi 7 support as part of software version 69.0.A.2.44, which also includes the September 2024 security patch. XperiCheck indicates that most versions of the Xperia 1 VI, such as those available in Europe, the UK, Japan, and Southeast Asia, should have already received the 69.0.A.2.44 update.
