  • OnePlus and Reliance Jio Collaborate on 5G Network Slicing Tests

OnePlus and Reliance Jio Collaborate on 5G Network Slicing Tests

In a significant development within their 5G innovation partnership, OnePlus and Jio have successfully conducted joint trials of 5G network slicing at their newly inaugurated 5G innovation lab in India. This progress marks an essential move towards enhancing the 5G experience for smartphone users nationwide.

5G Network Slicing on OnePlus Nord 4

During the demonstration, the teams integrated the core network and chip module of the recently released OnePlus Nord 4. This setup enabled them to effectively test the 5G network slicing technology.

The trials illustrated how various applications could utilize dedicated network slices to boost their 5G performance. This capability means that the network can deliver more flexible and efficient connectivity, specifically tailored to meet the unique demands of different applications and services.

Ramagopala Reddy, Vice President at OnePlus India, expressed satisfaction with the advancements. He underscored the importance of this collaboration in pushing technology forward and enhancing user experiences in India. Reddy pointed out that the successful 5G network slicing deployment is a critical benchmark for practical implementation and will serve as a guide for network operators worldwide.

    Future Plans for Commercial Deployment

Looking forward, OnePlus and Jio are set to finalize the details necessary for commercial deployment, anticipated in the upcoming months. Their ongoing efforts will focus on continued innovation in 5G technology, in collaboration with global stakeholders, to advance network slicing solutions. This will enable the delivery of more secure, reliable, and adaptable 5G services to users across India.

    Understanding 5G Network Slicing

For those unfamiliar with the concept, 5G network slicing is a technology that segments a single physical 5G network into multiple virtual networks, each optimized for specific use cases or applications. These virtual networks, or "slices," can be tailored with different characteristics such as speed, bandwidth, security, and reliability to meet diverse needs. This method allows for more efficient and flexible network management, ensuring that various services and applications receive the appropriate resources and performance levels.

  • Why OnePlus Nord 4 Stands Out: Key Features and Benefits

Why OnePlus Nord 4 Stands Out: Key Features and Benefits

The OnePlus Nord series has seen significant evolution over the years, incorporating spec upgrades and design overhauls, often accompanied by price increases.

The fourth-generation model, known as the OnePlus Nord 4, stands out as the most distinct in the lineup.

This time around, the Nord 4 comes with a price reduction instead of an increase. It features a fresh design and new materials, while still offering spec upgrades.

Priced at ₹29,999, it falls into the sub-₹30,000 smartphone category in India, which has been highly competitive in recent years.

Several alternatives exist, but the OnePlus Nord 4 has unique features that distinguish it from its rivals. Let’s explore these features.

    Metal Unibody Design

The OnePlus Nord 4 is currently the only metal unibody smartphone available in India. While metal phones were once standard, glass and plastic backs have become more common.

Metal phones are generally more durable, with bodies that may dent or scratch but not crack like plastic or glass panels. The Nord 4 also has a dual finish on the back, with the camera section featuring glass, reminiscent of the first three generations of Google Pixel phones.

The cameras are arranged horizontally, making them easier to keep smudge-free. The device is available in three colors: Obsidian Midnight for a subtle look, and Mercurial Silver or Oasis Green for a fancier appearance.

    Longest Software Support

The OnePlus Nord 4 runs on OxygenOS 14, based on Android 14, and the company promises 6 years of software updates. This includes 4 Android updates and 6 years of security updates, ensuring support up to Android 18 and security updates until 2030.

This level of software support surpasses other phones in its segment, including the OnePlus 12, which is only guaranteed 5 years of support. Additionally, OnePlus claims that the phone will maintain peak battery capacity for 4 years. If the battery does degrade, replacement is cheaper than buying a new phone.

    Premium Experience

In India, OnePlus is known for its premium offerings, often compared to brands like Apple and Samsung. The unboxing experience is unique, with a high-quality, color-matching case, necessary adapters and cables for fast charging, a Red Cable membership card, and brand stickers.

OnePlus also excels in after-sales service, being the only brand to offer assistance for the ‘green line’ issue.

    Better Deals With Ageing

OnePlus now offers regular discounts on its products, a change from earlier practices. These discounts improve as the devices age and are available both online and offline.

The OnePlus Nord 4, starting at ₹29,999 for the 8GB + 128GB variant, may see price reductions in the coming months. Historical trends suggest that the 8GB + 256GB (₹32,999) and 12GB + 256GB (₹35,999) variants could also drop below ₹30,000.

  • OnePlus Nord 4 Repair Risky: Scores 4/10 on Repairability

OnePlus Nord 4 Repair Risky: Scores 4/10 on Repairability

The newly launched OnePlus Nord 4 stands out as the first 5G phone featuring an aluminum unibody design. This choice not only provides a more robust feel but also potentially better impact resistance. However, it complicates independent repair efforts.

    Challenges with Disassembly

Tech teardown expert PBKReviews recently explored the internals of the Nord 4, facing significant challenges. The video demonstration shows that the rugged metal back, while offering durability, is extremely hard to open, complicating access to the core components.

Even the initial task of removing the top glass cover proved difficult, despite some success using a plastic tool. The real struggle came with the metal back, which required metal tools, presenting a higher risk of scratching or denting the phone’s sleek aluminum exterior.

    Durability and Design

On the brighter side, the aluminum body appears more robust than the common glass-backed smartphones. The Oasis Green shell successfully resisted bending attempts, despite its slim design. Additionally, the phone’s IP65 dust and water resistance rating indicates it can handle minor spills and dust exposure.

    Repairability Concerns

Not all news is negative for DIY repairs. The Nord 4 features a 5,500mAh battery housed in an adhesive pouch, making it easier to remove and replace. Furthermore, replacing the high-end Aqua Touch 120Hz AMOLED display might be feasible, though caution is advised due to a ribbon connector located in the lower left corner.

Despite these positive aspects, PBKReviews gave the Nord 4 a low repairability score of 4/10, even lower than the recently reviewed CMF Phone 1. While the metal construction enhances durability, it appears that independent repairs on the Nord 4 will be both time-consuming and risky.

Overall, the OnePlus Nord 4 offers a sturdy build and some user-friendly repair features, but its challenging disassembly process might deter those looking to conduct independent repairs.

OnePlus is gearing up for its Summer launch event on July 16. While the brand hasn't officially disclosed the names of the new products, it is widely anticipated that the Nord 4 smartphone, TWS earphones, and a smartwatch will be unveiled. Earlier today, a schematic of the OnePlus Nord 4 leaked, revealing its design. Now, a new official-looking poster of the upcoming smartphone has surfaced, providing a clear glimpse.

OnePlus Nord 4 Official Poster Leaked

OnePlus Club shared a poster of the forthcoming Nord 4 smartphone on X (formerly known as Twitter). The poster shows the smartphone with a flat frame. The volume rocker and power buttons are positioned on the right side, while the alert slider is on the left. Unlike last year’s Nord 3, the Nord 4 will not have a vertical camera arrangement. Additionally, OnePlus intends to differentiate the Nord 4 from the Nord CE 4 and 4 Lite 5G. The new model will feature two horizontally aligned camera rings and an LED flash near the right edge.

    Design and Features

The OnePlus Nord 4 will sport a dual-tone back panel. The area beneath the camera sensors will have a glossy finish, while the rest of the panel is expected to feature a metal finish. This design is reminiscent of the early Pixel smartphones. The device will be available in three colors: Green, Silver, and Black. The Silver variant will have diagonal stripes below the glossy section. OnePlus has hinted that the device will come with a metal unibody. A frontal view of the Nord 4 reveals a center-aligned punch-hole cutout display with very thin bezels.

OnePlus is likely to disclose more information about its upcoming devices as the launch date approaches.
