    Samsung Galaxy S27, Z Fold 8, Z Flip 8 Hit by Shortage

    Key Takeaway

    – Samsung may use a Chinese BOE display in its Galaxy S series for the first time.
    – Component shortages (DRAM, memory) are forcing compromises on the Galaxy S27 base model.
    – Camera upgrades for the Galaxy S27 are likely limited to the Ultra/Pro models.
    – Upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8 will face unavoidable price increases.
    – Supply chain issues are driven by AI data center expansion and consumer demand for memory.

Samsung Might Use BOE Displays in Future Galaxy Phones

Just a few weeks ago, a previously almost unthinkable piece of news broke: For the first time, Samsung may install a BOE display from China — rather than one from its own factories — in one of its Galaxy S-series flagship models. Whether this will actually transpire remains to be seen, but it certainly aligns with recent news from the supply chain, shared by Korean blogger Yeux1122. He states that global shortage of various components, particularly DRAM and memory, is already forcing Samsung to make compromises in the development of the Galaxy S27 generation.

Galaxy S27 Base Model Display and Camera Changes

Specifically, the feature set of the Galaxy S27 base model has apparently been put on ice, at least regarding the display. Other industry sources report that a camera upgrade, like the one expected on the Galaxy S27 Ultra or the new Galaxy S27 Pro, is very unlikely for the most affordable Galaxy S27 model. At the very least, there are no indications of this in the supply chain. So it currently looks as though the two most expensive Galaxy S27 models will mostly benefit from new components.

Foldable Galaxy Models Also Affected by Shortages

Moreover, the Samsung foldables launching in July will also suffer from the shortage of essential components, primarily caused by the expansion of AI data centers as well as the consumers interested in them. European and Asian sales channels have privately expressed pessimism regarding the expected sales prices of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Price increases, at least for the higher-end storage options, are reportedly unavoidable, even if there are attractive pre-order deals and trade-in offers for older hardware at launch.

Samsung Android Ultra Rival Gets Less Crease Than Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra

    Key Takeaway

    – Galaxy Z Fold 8 “Wide” uses 60μm UTG (30% thicker) for less creasing, while the Fold 8 Ultra remains at 45μm.
    – The “Wide” model is expected to directly compete with Apple’s iPhone Ultra under closer scrutiny for crease-free design.
    – Thicker UTG reduces creasing and improves drop resistance but increases risk of breakage when folded.
    – The Galaxy Z Fold 8 serves as a test case; if successful, the 60μm UTG will likely be adopted in the Galaxy Z Fold 9 (2027).

Foldable Glass Gets a Major Thickness Upgrade

Accoring to a recent report by ZDNet Korea, the presumably more expensive and larger Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will be less impressive then the more compact and wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, which has also been referred to as the Galaxy Z Wide Fold or Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. The report states that Samsung is using 30% thicker ultrathin glass (UTG) in the wider foldable than in the regular Galaxy Z Fold 8 form factor. We expect this compact foldable to directly compete with Apple’s iPhone Ultra and so come under closer scrutiny regarding its crease-free design.

    Thickness Comparisons Across Generations

While the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (in the classic tall form factor) is said to use 45-micrometer-thin glass, the UTG thickness in the “Wide Fold” will apparently be 60 micrometers. The recent history with previous Galaxy Z Fold generations is also interesting. Accordingly, the glass thickness of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 from 2024 was 30 micrometers; on the thinner Special Edition, which was only available in Korea and China, it was increased to 45 micrometers—the same value as on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. This means that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will likely see little change in this respect compared to its predecessor.

    Tradeoffs of Thicker Glass

While a thicker UTG layer reduces creasing in the flexible AMOLED panel and offers advantages in the event of a drop, it also increases the risk of it breaking when folded. If the significantly thicker UTG layer proves successful in the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Galaxy Z Fold 9 will also likely adopt the 60-micrometer-thick UTG component in 2027. Hence, the Galaxy Z Wide Fold is essentially a test case for the next generation of Samsung foldables.

Leaked Samsung Fold 8 & Ultra Replicas Show Major Design Shift

    Key Takeaway

    – Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra have very different form factors (wider vs. narrower).
    – Choosing between them will come down to personal preference.
    – The wider design follows a 2026-2027 trend influenced by Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone.
    – Huawei released a wide foldable (Pura X Max) before both Samsung and Apple.
    – Samsung’s Unpacked event is rumored for July 22; Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected in September.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra Design Comparrisons Leaked

After when the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 was spotted in the wild for the first time, and with the leaked replica of an iPhone Ultra/Fold, new images of Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra design models seem to highlight exactly how different Samsung’s new foldables might be from each other. The side-by-side photo of the low-quality replicas strongly suggests that picking between the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the narrower Fold 8 Ultra will come down to personal preference.

Form Factor Differences and New Trends

This emphasises the massive differences in the form factor that the new, wider Fold is expected to bring. While the Fold 8 Ultra is said to be more or less identical to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the design of the Fold 8 follows the new trend that more or less every phone-maker will be jumping on in 2026-2027. It is largely believed that Samsung went down the wider Fold path due mainly to Apple’s decision to make the upcoming foldable iPhone wider.

    Competition Arrives and Release Timeline

However, Huawei has beat both tech giants to the punch by releasing the wide Huawei Pura X Max months earlier. The wider Fold 8 and also the Fold 8 Ultra are expected to break cover on July 22, when Samsung is rumored to be holding its next Unpacked event. Meanwhile, the foldable iPhone (Ultra) is said to launch in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series, Ice Universe has reported.
