Google has introduced Android 15, but it isn’t ready for a stable release just yet. The latest mobile operating system from Google includes several new features, such as built-in satellite connectivity support, which some Chinese phone manufacturers have already incorporated into their devices. Moreover, a few Chinese smartphone makers have rolled out the Android 15 Beta for select models.

    Initial Device Support and Stability

Devices like the OnePlus 12, Nothing Phone (2a), and realme 12 Pro+ are among the first to get the Android 15 update. However, it's worth noting that this early version is quite buggy and not suitable for everyday use. To improve user experience, Chinese tech giants are urging app developers to quickly adapt their apps to Android 15.

    Android 15 Development Timeline

Beyond new features, Android 15 introduces changes to the Android APIs. The first version of Android 15 was released in February 2024, with the stable release expected after July. Chinese smartphone manufacturers anticipate that app developers will implement the necessary changes by August 31. Companies like Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo have provided the necessary guides for developers on their websites.

    Collaboration Among Chinese Manufacturers

This collaboration is not a first for these companies. Previously, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo announced a cross-device wireless file transfer standard. They have now issued a joint statement aimed at developers. You can read Xiaomi’s statement about Android 15, as well as OPPO‘s and vivo‘s statements on their respective links.

Google has already released several Android 15 betas, and a couple more are expected to be released in the coming weeks before it’s refined for the final release. We don’t have an official release date yet. However, it’s expected to be released in October.

These Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco devices are expected to get the Android 15 update according to the software update policy.

Xiaomi’s Software Update Policy: A Mixed Bag

Xiaomi has traditionally offered only three years of OS updates for its flagship phones, but this was extended to four years last October. This change came shortly after Google announced seven years of OS updates for its Pixel 8 and 8 Pro models.

Major OS updates are crucial as they bring new features and improvements, keeping devices relevant over the years. Xiaomi had been lagging behind competitors like Samsung, OnePlus, and Google in this area. However, the company recently announced four years of OS updates, aligning its policy with other major Android brands.

Despite this positive change, Xiaomi's software policy remains unclear for most devices. Users often don't know how many Android updates their device will receive. Typically, high-end devices get three OS updates, while mid-range and budget phones receive two updates, with some exceptions getting an additional generation.

When Will Xiaomi Start Rolling Out Android 15 Update?

Android 15 development is well underway, with multiple developer previews and beta builds already released by Google. The final release is expected in October, around which time Xiaomi will begin rolling out the stable Android 15 update to its eligible devices, starting with recent flagship models.

Xiaomi has announced the Android 15 beta program for several devices, including Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi 13 Pro, and Xiaomi Pad 6S 12.4. Owners of these devices can sign up for the beta program to experience Android 15 early. Our guide on how to download and install the Android 15 beta on Xiaomi devices can help you get started.

Android 15: What’s Exciting About the New OS?

Here are the major changes in Android 15:

    1. Satellite Connectivity
      • Allows sending texts without a nearby cell tower, as long as there is access to the open sky. This feature supports SMS, MMS, and RCS apps, and is not limited to emergency use.
    2. App Archiving
      • Similar to offloading apps on iPhones, it enables uninstalling unnecessary apps while retaining user data. This feature is integrated at the OS level.
    3. App Pairs
    • Allows saving favorite split-screen app combinations for quick access, particularly useful for large-screen devices.
    1. Private Space
      • Introduces a "private space" to keep sensitive apps and files under an additional layer of authentication, similar to Samsung's Secure Folder.
    2. Partial Screen Sharing
      • Enables sharing or recording a single app rather than the entire screen, preventing accidental exposure of sensitive apps.
    3. Notification Cooldown
    • Reduces the volume of successive notifications from the same app to prevent notification overload.
    1. High-Quality Webcam
      • Improves webcam video quality by disabling power optimizations, indicated by a new “HQ” symbol in the preview mode.

There are also rumors that Google might introduce a "Battery health" feature in Android 15, similar to what iPhones have had for years.

This list is not final, as the official list of Oppo devices eligible for the Android 15 upgrade is yet to be released. However, given the known software update policy for most devices, it was relatively straightforward to compile this preliminary list.

Oppo has committed to providing four Android upgrades for its flagship phones launched in 2023 and later. Devices launched before 2023 will get three Android upgrades.

    Software Update Policy

Mid-range Oppo phones from the Reno, F, K, and Find Lite/Neo series will receive two major Android updates. Budget A-series phones will mostly get one upgrade, although some may receive two major OS updates.

If your Oppo device isn’t listed, don’t fret. Wait for the official list, as Oppo may add more devices for the upgrade. You can then decide whether you need to upgrade to a newer model.

When Will Oppo Start Rolling Out the Android 15 Update?

Android 15 is still in development, with the stable release expected around October, similar to last year’s Android 14. Post-release, smartphone manufacturers usually take a few weeks to optimize their custom skins (ColorOS for Oppo) to work with the new Android OS.

Thanks to the beta program, not every Oppo user has to wait until the official release to explore new features. The Android 15 beta is already available for Oppo Find N3 and Find X7, giving users an early look at the new OS. More devices will join the beta program as time progresses. If you plan to install the beta, be aware that these builds might contain bugs and missing features.

Last year, Oppo began rolling out the stable Android 14 update to eligible devices in November. We expect a similar timeline for the Android 15 rollout this year.

Flagship phones will be the first to receive the new OS, followed by mid-range and budget devices.

    Android 15: What to Expect?

While Android 15 may not introduce a significant UI redesign, it offers many exciting features. One of the biggest changes is the addition of satellite connectivity support, allowing you to text even without nearby cell towers. Unlike Apple iPhones, this feature on Android won’t be limited to emergency use.

The new OS also enhances the Find My Phone feature, helping you locate your lost phone and assist others in finding theirs. All Android 15 devices can ping each other via Bluetooth, contributing to the network.

Android 15 introduces App Archiving, allowing you to save storage by uninstalling apps while retaining user data. When you reinstall the archived app, you can pick up where you left off without losing any data.

Another useful feature is partial screen-sharing, which lets you share or record a single app instead of your entire screen. The "Notification cooldown" feature reduces the volume of consecutive notifications from the same app.

    Update Policy

Galaxy S-series models post-S20 get four years of OS updates, while the latest Galaxy S24 series offers up to 7 OS updates. In the Galaxy Z series, all models launched after the Fold 2/Flip 2 are eligible for four OS upgrades.

Samsung also provides four years of Android updates to Galaxy Tab S8 series models and all S-series tablets launched after the Galaxy Tab S8. Other Galaxy tablets get two or three OS updates.

Select Galaxy A and Galaxy F series models come under Samsung’s four-generation OS update promise, while most only receive two Android updates.

Samsung One UI 7 (Android 15): What’s New and When It’s Coming?

If your Galaxy device qualifies for the One UI 7 upgrade, you’re probably eager to explore the new features and changes. The wait may seem long as Android 15 is still in the beta phase.

Google is expected to release Android 15 in October, and if Samsung follows last year’s timeline, the One UI 7 rollout will begin in November. However, newer Galaxy flagship smartphones may get an early look at Android 15 by joining the beta program.

    Expected Features in Android 15

    Satellite Connectivity Support

Android 15 introduces support for satellite connectivity, allowing you to send texts even without nearby cell towers, provided you have access to the open sky. This feature supports SMS apps and preinstalled RCS apps, extending beyond emergency use.

    Find My Phone Network

The Find My Phone feature gets a significant update. Android 15 phones can ping each other via Bluetooth to help locate lost devices. Nearby Android devices in the Find My network can pick up Bluetooth signals from the broadcasting device and upload encrypted location details to Google’s servers, which can be decrypted by the broadcasting device owner.

    Battery Health

Android 15 could introduce the much-requested “Battery Health” feature, indicating remaining battery capacity to help users replace the battery at the right time. Though unconfirmed by Google, it may appear in upcoming beta releases.

    App Archiving

App Archiving lets you uninstall apps while retaining user data, allowing you to resume where you left off when reinstalling. While Google already offers this via the Play Store, Android 15 will extend this capability to apps installed outside the Play Store.

    Partial Screen Sharing

Partial screen sharing allows users to share and record a single app rather than the entire screen, adding a privacy-focused feature to Android 15.

    Notification Cooldown

Android 15 introduces the “Notification Cooldown” feature to prevent users from being overwhelmed by multiple notifications from the same app, reducing the volume of successive notifications.

    Sensitive Notifications

Sensitive notifications in Android 15 prevent malicious third-party apps from reading your OTPs.

  • OnePlus 12 Adds ‘Repair Mode’ in Android 15 Beta 1, Needs Refinement

OnePlus 12 Adds ‘Repair Mode’ in Android 15 Beta 1, Needs Refinement

OnePlus has introduced the Android 15 Beta 1 update for its OnePlus 12 and OnePlus Open devices. While this initial Android 15 Beta isn't perfect, it does bring security enhancements and some minor user interface updates. Additionally, the OnePlus 12 has gained a new “Repair mode” feature with this update, designed to protect your privacy when sending your phone for repairs.

Typically, before sending your device to a technician, you need to back up and erase all your data. After the repair, you have to reinstall everything, which can be quite time-consuming.

    Repair Mode Needs Refinement

Those using the OnePlus 12 with the Android 15 Beta 1 update can access the Repair mode by navigating to Settings > System & updates > Repair mode. However, the feature still has some kinks to iron out.

When you select the Repair mode option, you'll need to complete a setup process that takes a minute or two, after which you'll be taken to the home screen as a separate user. Once you exit the repair mode, the phone will erase all data stored during the process and revert to its previous state.

    Similar Features from Competitors

We've seen similar features from Samsung and Pixel. Samsung introduced this functionality in OneUI 5 based on Android 13, naming it Maintenance mode. Google included a similar feature, called Repair mode, in its Pixel devices starting with Android 14 QPR1.

Although OnePlus’s version of Repair mode isn't as refined as those from Samsung and Google, it's still a valuable addition due to the time and effort it saves. Hopefully, OnePlus will address these minor issues before releasing the stable version.

  • Android 15 Boosts Battery Standby by 3 Hours with Faster Doze Mode

Android 15 Boosts Battery Standby by 3 Hours with Faster Doze Mode

At the recent Google I/O developer conference, Google introduced several new features for Android 15, focusing on enhancing user privacy and security. However, one of the standout features promises to improve battery life for all users.

    Enhanced Doze Mode

Android 15 brings an optimization to Doze mode, a feature already embedded in the operating system designed to conserve battery when the phone is not in use. The key improvement is the speed at which devices enter Doze mode. Google claims that devices running Android 15 will enter Doze mode 50% faster than those on Android 14.

Doze mode conserves battery by limiting background activities and app access to system resources when the phone is idle for extended periods. This results in reduced battery drain, particularly from apps that may run unnecessary background processes.

    Battery Life Impact

According to Google’s internal tests, the quicker activation of Doze mode could result in up to three additional hours of standby time on some devices. However, the exact benefit may vary depending on the hardware and usage patterns of the specific device.

This enhancement will be available for all devices updating to Android 15, leading to a general improvement in battery life across the board.

    Wear OS 6 Integration

In addition, this feature is expected to be included in Wear OS 6, the upcoming version of the smartwatch operating system based on Android 15. Although a release date for Wear OS 6 hasn’t been confirmed yet, it is anticipated to launch sometime next year.

The improvements to Doze mode in Android 15 mark a significant step toward better battery management for Android users. While the exact impact may vary from device to device, the faster transition to Doze mode offers a promising enhancement for extending standby battery life.

  • Nokia Phones Eligible for Android 15 Update

Nokia Phones Eligible for Android 15 Update

Nokia is known for providing a near-stock Android experience on its smartphones, allowing for minimal changes when Google releases a new Android OS version. This should ideally enable Nokia devices to receive software updates more quickly than other brands. However, in recent years, this hasn't been the case.

Nokia's recent performance in software rollouts hasn't been impressive, but there's always hope for better updates each year. If you possess a Nokia smartphone, you're likely curious if it will receive the Android 15 update, given the buzz around the new OS.

Likely Candidates for Android 15 Update

Here are the Nokia phones most likely to receive the Android 15 update:

    • Nokia XR21
    • Nokia X30
    • Nokia G60
    • Nokia G42

This list is not final and is based on Nokia's software update policy. We will update it when official information becomes available.

Typically, HMD Global, Nokia's owner, offers two major OS updates and two to three years of security updates for its smartphones. Unfortunately, this policy doesn't extend to budget and entry-level phones, which rarely receive Android OS updates.

    Android 15 Rollout Timeline

Android 15 is currently in development, with several developer previews and beta builds available for testers. According to Google's official timeline, the beta phase will last until June 2024, followed by a platform stability phase for final tweaks and bug fixes.

While there's no official release date for Android 15 yet, it is expected to launch around the same time as last year, likely in October. It will probably be unveiled alongside the Pixel 9 series, which will be the first to run the new OS out-of-the-box.

However, based on past performance, it's unlikely that HMD Global will start rolling out the new OS in October. For instance, Android 14 was released in October last year, but HMD Global only began its rollout in January this year.

    Exciting Features in Android 15

Android 15 promises a host of exciting features, making it a more substantial upgrade than Android 13 and Android 14. Here are some major features discovered so far:

    • Circle to Search: This feature allows you to search anything on your screen by drawing a circle around it. Initially available on the Galaxy S24 series, it was later adopted by the Pixel 8 series and may now be supported by all Android 15 devices.
    • Satellite Connectivity Support: Enables text messaging even without cell towers, as long as you have access to the open sky. This feature supports SMS apps and preinstalled RCS apps, not just for emergencies.
    • On-Device AI Capabilities: Announced during Google I/O 2024, these capabilities will be part of Android 15, though specific uses are yet to be revealed.
    • Find My Phone Network: With this, all Android 15 phones can help locate lost devices by pinging each other via Bluetooth. The nearby devices contribute to a network that helps find the lost device by uploading encrypted location details to Google’s servers.
    • Gemini Assistant: Android 15 will replace Google Assistant with Gemini as the default assistant on all devices running the new OS.
    • App Archiving: This feature allows you to uninstall apps while retaining user data, making it easier to pick up where you left off upon reinstallation. Unlike the current app archiving feature available through the Play Store, Android 15 will extend this capability to apps installed outside the Play Store.
    • Notification Cooldown: Designed to prevent notification overload, this feature reduces the volume of successive notifications from the same app.
    • Partial Screen Sharing: Users can share and record a single app instead of the entire screen, a feature already available on Pixel devices and now extended to all Android 15 devices.
    • High-Quality Webcam: Android 15 introduces a high-quality webcam mode that significantly enhances video quality by disabling power optimizations, although it results in increased battery drain.
