Android 15: Last Major Update for Select Motorola Phones

The stable release of Android 15 is anticipated later this year, but thanks to beta versions, we have a good understanding of what the new operating system will bring. It promises to be an exciting update, and many are eagerly waiting for Google to launch the stable build.

Each year, numerous Android devices cease to receive OS updates when they reach the end of their promised update cycle. This year, Android 15 will be the final major OS update for several Motorola phones.

If you’re concerned about software updates, check the list below to determine if you need to upgrade to a newer model to continue receiving Android updates.

Android 15: Final Update for These Motorola Models

    • Moto X40
    • Moto G Play (2024)
    • Moto G84
    • Moto G73
    • Moto G54
    • Moto G54 Power
    • Moto G53
    • Moto G23
    • Moto G14

    • Moto G Power 5G
    • Moto G Stylus 5G (2023)
    • Moto G Stylus (2023)
    • Moto E14

Motorola has not yet disclosed a list of devices that will support Android 15. Therefore, this unofficial list was created by examining each device’s software update policy and the company’s historical updates.

Typically, Motorola provides three Android updates for its Edge and Razr models launched in 2023 or later, while older models usually receive two updates. The budget-friendly Moto G series generally gets two OS updates, whereas the entry-level E series receives only one.

When Will Motorola Release Android 15?

Android 15 is nearing its stable release, currently in the platform stability phase. This is the final development phase where Google resolves existing bugs and applies final touches before the stable release.

Google typically does not announce the stable release date for a new OS in advance. However, based on the timeline from last year, the stable build is expected to be available in October, just like Android 14.

Several brands, including Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo, and Vivo, have already initiated the Android 15 beta program, allowing selected users to test the new OS before the stable release. However, Motorola has yet to join this beta initiative.

Motorola has struggled with timely software updates in recent years. The brand began rolling out Android 14 earlier this year when other brands were concluding their updates. Given this, we don’t anticipate an early rollout of Android 15 from Motorola. The stable build will likely start being released towards the end of this year or early next year.

    Anticipated Features of Android 15

    1. Satellite Connectivity

Android 15 expands support for satellite connectivity, enabling SMS, MMS, and native RCS apps to send and receive messages via satellite. The OS introduces UI elements to ensure a consistent user experience.

Not all Android 15 devices will support satellite connectivity, as this will likely require specific chips and carrier support. However, this feature won’t be limited to emergency uses alone.

    2. Theft Detection Lock

Google is introducing a Theft Detection Lock feature, which thieves will find frustrating. This feature, combined with the Find My Device network, can make a device unusable after a factory reset if it’s detected as stolen.

Google’s AI will determine if a device is snatched from a user’s hands, locking it automatically to protect data. Thieves won’t be able to activate the device without the owner’s Google account credentials.

    3. Private Space

Android 15 will introduce a private space for secure storage of confidential photos, videos, or apps, which can be protected with a separate lock. This space ensures that other users are unaware of any activities within it.

    1. Split App Shortcuts

Enhanced multitasking will allow users to save shortcut icons for frequently used split-screen app combinations, saving time for those who use split-screen mode often.

    2. App Archiving

Similar to the offloading feature on iPhones, Android 15 will allow users to uninstall unnecessary apps while retaining user data. This means no data loss, and users can resume where they left off after reinstalling the app.

Android already offers app archiving through the Google Play Store, but Android 15 will integrate this capability at the OS level, allowing archiving and restoring of apps, even those installed from outside the Play Store.

When Will Vivo Roll Out Android 15?

Although Android 15 is still in development, we are nearing the stable release phase since the fourth beta version is now available. This is the final scheduled beta for Google Pixels, but Google might still release .x patches.

Google has yet to announce an official release date for Android 15, but it is expected to be unveiled next month at the Made by Google event, alongside the Pixel 9 series. These new Pixels will be the first devices to come with the latest OS.

Once the stable build is available, smartphone manufacturers will start fine-tuning their custom skins (like Funtouch OS) to be compatible with the new OS. This process usually takes a few weeks before the stable build is distributed.

Last year, Android 14 was released in October, and Vivo began rolling it out to eligible devices the same month. This year, the rollout could also start as early as next month, with October being the latest possibility.

Key Features to Expect in Android 15

    1. Theft Detection Lock

The Find My Device network has recently been updated, allowing users to locate lost Android devices through a crowdsourced network of over a billion Android devices. Android 15 will introduce a Theft Detection Lock feature that automatically locks the device if it detects unusual motion or suspicious activities.

    2. Private Space

Android 15 adds a Private Space feature, allowing users to store confidential apps or files under an extra layer of security. Users can use a different Google account and lock for enhanced protection.

    3. Satellite Connectivity

The new OS extends platform support for satellite connectivity, allowing SMS, MMS, and native RCS apps to send and receive messages via satellite. This feature might require special chip and carrier support.

    1. App Archiving

Similar to the “Offloading apps” feature on Apple iPhones, Android 15 allows users to uninstall unnecessary apps while retaining user data. This feature is integrated at the OS level, unlike the existing app archiving via the Google Play Store.

    2. Partial Screen Sharing

Android 15 introduces partial screen sharing, enabling users to choose specific apps for screen sharing or recording. This ensures that only the app’s content is visible, keeping other details like incoming notifications private.

    3. High-Quality Webcam Mode

The new OS will offer a high-quality webcam mode, allowing users to use their Android phones as webcams for computers. This mode can be activated by tapping a new "HQ" symbol in the webcam preview, which may increase battery consumption.

Galaxy Buds 3 & 3 Pro Prices Leaked via Retail Listing

Samsung is anticipated to launch its newest wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, in the coming days. A recent leak has emerged, disclosing the pricing details for these earbuds in the South Korean market.

According to a screenshot shared by tipster Sleep Kuma from a retail listing, the prices for the Galaxy Buds 3 series are expected to be in line with the previous models.

The leak indicates that the Galaxy Buds 3 will be priced at KRW 203,700 (around USD $148), while the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro will be available for KRW 296,700 (approximately USD $215). These prices are comparable to the launch prices of the Galaxy Buds 2 and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.

    Model Numbers and Design

The leak also provides information about the model numbers and designs of the upcoming earbuds. The Galaxy Buds 3, which will be available in black and white, carries the model number SM-R530. On the other hand, the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, shown in white, has the model number SM-R630.

Samsung appears to have significantly revamped the design of the new earbuds compared to the previous generation. Both models now feature stems, similar to Apple’s AirPods and AirPods Pro.

    Advanced Audio Features

There are also speculations that the Galaxy Buds 3 series will support a high-quality wireless codec, capable of 24-bit 96KHz audio transmission. Additionally, the buds are expected to come with Adaptive ANC, Adaptive Equalizer, and Ambient Sound features, and will likely utilize Bluetooth 5.4 for audio transmission.

With active noise cancellation (ANC) enabled, the base Galaxy Buds 3 is projected to offer up to five hours of playback time, extending to six hours with ANC disabled.

The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro may provide up to six hours of battery life with ANC on and up to seven hours with ANC off. Both models will also come with an IP57 rating for protection against dust and water splashes.

These devices are unlikely to receive the Funtouch OS 15 update based on Android 15.

Please note that this list is not official. It is based on an analysis of the company’s software update policy and past rollouts.

    Vivo’s Software Update Policy

Despite being a leading smartphone brand globally, Vivo lacks a clear software update policy for most of its devices. The brand doesn’t guarantee software updates for most of its phones and tablets, leaving users uncertain about the number of OS updates they can expect.

Typically, Vivo T and V-series phones receive two OS updates, while Y-series phones get just one. In 2021, Vivo promised three OS upgrades for select upcoming X-series models, an improvement from the previous two updates. This means their flagship phones can receive up to three Android updates.

Vivo needs to extend its OS update offerings, as competitors like Samsung and Google provide up to seven OS updates for their flagship phones. Even its sister brands, OnePlus and Oppo, offer up to five years of OS upgrades.

Android 15: Release Timeline for Vivo Phones

Google recently released the third beta of Android 15, marking a significant milestone as it entered the “platform stability” phase. This means all major changes are integrated, and the focus now shifts to polishing and bug fixes for the final release.

While there’s no official release date for Android 15, the timeline is similar to last year’s Android 14. If trends continue, the stable version of Android 15 might be released in October.

Thanks to the Android 15 beta program, many Vivo users are already experiencing the new OS. Currently, the beta program is available for Vivo X100 and iQOO 12, with more devices expected to join in the coming weeks and months. The stable build is likely to roll out around October.

    New Features in Android 15

Android 15 introduces several new features and enhancements. Here are some of the major changes:

    1. Private Space: This feature allows users to hide secret apps and files under an additional layer of protection using a separate user profile and a different lock. Activities in Private Space are hidden from other users, and apps used in this space don’t show in recent apps.
    2. Satellite Connectivity: Android 15 extends support for satellite connectivity, enabling SMS, MMS, and preloaded RCS apps to use satellites for messaging. The OS also includes UI elements for satellite connectivity and lets apps detect satellite connections.
    3. Theft Detection Lock: The device locks itself if it detects suspicious activities, such as someone running away with it or multiple failed login attempts. The device will require the original Google account to set up after a factory reset, rendering it useless to thieves.
    4. App Pairs: This feature allows users to create shortcuts for favorite split-screen combinations, saving time when using multiple apps in split-screen mode. It is restricted to wide-screen devices like tablets and foldable phones.
    5. Partial Screen Sharing: Users can share or record a particular screen rather than the entire window, enhancing privacy by preventing accidental exposure of sensitive information.

Xiaomi Bids Farewell to Old Changelogs

Xiaomi has declared its departure from “old boring changelogs” and is enhancing HyperOS updates with innovative testing methods. The Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi 14 Pro, Xiaomi 14 Ultra, and Redmi K60 Ultra have all received this new HyperOS update, which features a detailed changelog. This aligns with Xiaomi’s previous announcement and indicates the initial steps towards HyperOS 2.0.

The update, which we refer to as HyperOS 1.5, includes a very detailed changelog for the four flagship smartphones. Given Xiaomi’s typical update release policy, this update is essentially HyperOS 1.5, even though Xiaomi hasn’t officially labeled it as such.

The extensive changelog justifies why this update is considered “HyperOS 1.5.” It is not clear if the update will be limited to China, but it has been initially released there. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is gearing up for the launch of new foldable smartphones like the MIX Flip and MIX FOLD 4 and is also developing HyperOS 2.0, which will be officially announced in October.

  • Google Pixels Not Getting Android 15 Update

Google Pixels Not Getting Android 15 Update

Google has already rolled out early versions of Android 15, which promise a more thrilling experience compared to the last two iterations. Key highlights include Private Space for safeguarding private apps and files, app pairing for enhanced multitasking, Theft Detection Lock, new Health Connect features, and more.

Android 15 is poised to be an exciting upgrade, though it won’t be available for most Google Pixel phones. Check the list below to see if you’ll need to upgrade your device to enjoy the latest features and improvements.

These Google Pixel Phones Aren’t Eligible for Android 15

    • Pixel 5
    • Pixel 5a 5G
    • Pixel 4
    • Pixel 4 XL
    • Pixel 4a
    • Pixel 4a 5G
    • Pixel 3
    • Pixel 3 XL
    • Pixel 3a
    • Pixel 3a XL
    • And older Pixels

These devices are likely to miss out on the Android 15 update, based on a review of each Google Pixel device’s software update policy.

Google Pixel’s Software Update Policy: The Good and the Bad

Google Pixels have been known for their excellent software update policies, and recent changes have made it even harder for users to consider other smartphones over Pixels.

Until the Google Pixel 7 series, the brand provided 3 years of Android updates. The launch of the Pixel 8 brought a surprising 7 years of OS updates, a move that astonished the smartphone industry.

While this is great news for Pixel 8 owners, older Pixel users are disappointed as Google didn’t extend OS upgrades for them. This means Android 16 might be the final OS update for the Pixel 7, but the Pixel 8 will receive updates until 2021.

Google was the first to announce 7 years of OS updates, and Samsung quickly followed by offering the same support for the Galaxy S24 series.

    Android 15 Release Timeline

Google employs a three-step strategy for Android OS releases, applicable to Android 15 as well. The first phase is the developer preview, where early builds are released for developers.

The initial developer preview build for Android 15 arrived in February, followed by a second one in March. April marked the beginning of the second phase with the first beta release, making it available for public testing.

Multiple beta builds of Android 15 have already been released, with the latest being Beta 2.2. More beta releases are expected before the OS reaches the platform stability phase, preparing for the stable release.

According to the official timeline, platform stability should start around July-August. Although the timeline doesn’t specify the stable release month, it suggests that Google is following last year’s pattern, likely making Android 15 publicly available in October.

    Top Features in Android 15

    1. Private Space: Adds an extra layer of security for sensitive files and apps, similar to the Secure Folder on Samsung phones. This feature creates a separate space hidden from the regular one.
    2. App Archiving: Enables unarchiving apps to save storage while retaining user data. Previously limited to Play Store apps, Android 15 integrates this feature at the OS level, allowing archiving/restoring of any apps, even those installed outside the Play Store.
    3. Theft Detection Lock: Automatically locks the screen when suspicious activities like theft or multiple failed log-in attempts are detected. This feature prevents the device from being set up with a different Google account unless the original credentials are known.
    1. App Pairs: Allows users to save their favorite split-screen combinations for quicker access. A shortcut is created on the home screen to instantly open both apps in split-screen mode.
    2. Improved Health Connect: Includes new data types across fitness, nutrition, and more. Beta 2 introduces skin temperature and training plans as additional data types.
    3. Partial Screen Sharing: Allows users to share or record a single app rather than the entire screen.
    1. Notification Cooldown: Prevents users from being overwhelmed by successive notifications from the same app by lowering the volume.

These Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco devices are expected to get the Android 15 update according to the software update policy.

Xiaomi’s Software Update Policy: A Mixed Bag

Xiaomi has traditionally offered only three years of OS updates for its flagship phones, but this was extended to four years last October. This change came shortly after Google announced seven years of OS updates for its Pixel 8 and 8 Pro models.

Major OS updates are crucial as they bring new features and improvements, keeping devices relevant over the years. Xiaomi had been lagging behind competitors like Samsung, OnePlus, and Google in this area. However, the company recently announced four years of OS updates, aligning its policy with other major Android brands.

Despite this positive change, Xiaomi's software policy remains unclear for most devices. Users often don't know how many Android updates their device will receive. Typically, high-end devices get three OS updates, while mid-range and budget phones receive two updates, with some exceptions getting an additional generation.

When Will Xiaomi Start Rolling Out Android 15 Update?

Android 15 development is well underway, with multiple developer previews and beta builds already released by Google. The final release is expected in October, around which time Xiaomi will begin rolling out the stable Android 15 update to its eligible devices, starting with recent flagship models.

Xiaomi has announced the Android 15 beta program for several devices, including Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi 13 Pro, and Xiaomi Pad 6S 12.4. Owners of these devices can sign up for the beta program to experience Android 15 early. Our guide on how to download and install the Android 15 beta on Xiaomi devices can help you get started.

Android 15: What’s Exciting About the New OS?

Here are the major changes in Android 15:

    1. Satellite Connectivity
      • Allows sending texts without a nearby cell tower, as long as there is access to the open sky. This feature supports SMS, MMS, and RCS apps, and is not limited to emergency use.
    2. App Archiving
      • Similar to offloading apps on iPhones, it enables uninstalling unnecessary apps while retaining user data. This feature is integrated at the OS level.
    3. App Pairs
    • Allows saving favorite split-screen app combinations for quick access, particularly useful for large-screen devices.
    1. Private Space
      • Introduces a "private space" to keep sensitive apps and files under an additional layer of authentication, similar to Samsung's Secure Folder.

This list is not final, as the official list of Oppo devices eligible for the Android 15 upgrade is yet to be released. However, given the known software update policy for most devices, it was relatively straightforward to compile this preliminary list.

Oppo has committed to providing four Android upgrades for its flagship phones launched in 2023 and later. Devices launched before 2023 will get three Android upgrades.

    Software Update Policy

Mid-range Oppo phones from the Reno, F, K, and Find Lite/Neo series will receive two major Android updates. Budget A-series phones will mostly get one upgrade, although some may receive two major OS updates.

If your Oppo device isn’t listed, don’t fret. Wait for the official list, as Oppo may add more devices for the upgrade. You can then decide whether you need to upgrade to a newer model.

When Will Oppo Start Rolling Out the Android 15 Update?

Android 15 is still in development, with the stable release expected around October, similar to last year’s Android 14. Post-release, smartphone manufacturers usually take a few weeks to optimize their custom skins (ColorOS for Oppo) to work with the new Android OS.

Thanks to the beta program, not every Oppo user has to wait until the official release to explore new features. The Android 15 beta is already available for Oppo Find N3 and Find X7, giving users an early look at the new OS. More devices will join the beta program as time progresses. If you plan to install the beta, be aware that these builds might contain bugs and missing features.

Last year, Oppo began rolling out the stable Android 14 update to eligible devices in November. We expect a similar timeline for the Android 15 rollout this year.

Flagship phones will be the first to receive the new OS, followed by mid-range and budget devices.

    Android 15: What to Expect?

While Android 15 may not introduce a significant UI redesign, it offers many exciting features. One of the biggest changes is the addition of satellite connectivity support, allowing you to text even without nearby cell towers. Unlike Apple iPhones, this feature on Android won’t be limited to emergency use.

The new OS also enhances the Find My Phone feature, helping you locate your lost phone and assist others in finding theirs. All Android 15 devices can ping each other via Bluetooth, contributing to the network.

Android 15 introduces App Archiving, allowing you to save storage by uninstalling apps while retaining user data. When you reinstall the archived app, you can pick up where you left off without losing any data.

Another useful feature is partial screen-sharing, which lets you share or record a single app instead of your entire screen. The "Notification cooldown" feature reduces the volume of consecutive notifications from the same app.

Respawn Battle Mechanic: Second Chance at Victory

This mechanic allows players an additional chance to respawn within the first eight minutes of the match. Players who are defeated can return to the battleground by interacting with Respawn Points or using a special Emergency Respawn item. However, once a player is defeated again after returning, they cannot enter the Respawn Battle for a second time. Teammates can also recall players during the Respawn Battle.
